A helpful hint on tighten gas cap message or small e vap leak is to put some vasoline on the filler neck and some on the O ring of the gas cap it may help.

This actually does work with very small leaks from old original gas caps and if you have a slightly rusty filler neck where the cap O ring sits

don't use petroleum based products (vaseline) on any rubber parts (o-rings, etc) as it breaks down the rubber. can use silicone grease instead.

Have I got a story for you. I've been filling up my mother's 2016 Highlander and noticed how tight her cap sealed compared to my 08 4runner. So, back in April I found your video.I thought when I get a code, I'll go oem. Yesterday, my dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Had Advance scam for codes and they came up with p0455. I now had a reason to buy a new cap and went straight to the dealer and purchased one. I installed it and reset the computer. Now, 5 starts later, I still don't have a code.Probably saved $200 or more to get it diagnosed and fixed. Nothing beats oem. Thank you Sir.

Great video Amd. I actually have been dealing with this same issue on my 04 Camry 3.3. Got an “oem” gas cap online and the P0442 and P0456 codes came back. I was chasing my tail looking into the purge valve, hoses, etc. I revísited the gas cap and ultimately realized that it was counterfeit. A whole lot of time wasted for a fake part. I went to the parts store to get an aftermarket gas cap and so far so good 🤞🏼 moral of the story is that just because it says OEM does not mean that it is a legitimate part. In my opinion, it’s best to get certain parts from the dealership.

100% truth! I'm old enough and made enough mistakes buying cheap parts, that I only put OEM parts on my Toyota and Honda vehicles. A great example was I bought CV-joints for my Honda Odyssey at 121,000 miles because they were cracking and popping every time I turned due to being warn out. Instead of going with the OEM I went with a set from Autozone. They didn't even make it 30,000 miles and it was right back to a knuckle popping horror show. I bit the bullet and went to Honda and did OEM like I should have, and now I'm at 211,100'ish miles on that 2008 Honda Odyssey and never had a problem again.

I got an '05 4runner for real cheap because some shop quoted this guy $1,300 to drop the fuel tank and fix a little tube with rodent damage. I just got some fuel rated hose for $1.50 at autozone, crawled under the truck and replaced the old plastic hose that was very much accessible without dropping anything.

This happened to me just last week. Bought a gas cap on Amazon, with good reviews, for my 2010 FJ cruiser. Put it on my Toyota. First time I walked by after driving, I could hear a sound from it. I did not think much of it. Seen this video. Went back to have a closer look. Sure enough not only was their a hissing sound, but it sounded like a pump running when the car was off. When I got really close, you could smell the gas leaking. Big thanks to our Toyota guru here.

+1 on the aftermarket axles. I put one on my 2017 ES300h after about 220k miles. Made noise from day 1. Bit the bullet and paid the ~$400 for the Lexus OEM. Solved the problem. Super quiet now.

I purchased some fake OEM iridium spark plugs from EBay before.... Never again! Got a P0456 on my RAV4, got genuine Toyota Gas Cap and purge valve canister, ran a few cycles and got rid of my code. Great video as always!

Thanks for you’re videos it is really helpful . I am from Oman ( a country near Dubai ) here we get a lot of American written of cars with very less miles . I personally own two cars from America which have been through major accidents . Camry 2007 le and Lexus es 350 2015 both of them run very good . My Camry has done 480k kms ( around 280k miles) no major issue and only burns oil and rides like a car should . My Lexus es has done 300k kms ( around 182k miles ) no issues yet just replaced sparks plugs and compressor once that’s it . I am really impressed how cheap you can get this cars and they last really really long time . Planning to buy a Rav4 In the comings years :)

Dude!!! I have an ;08. I have often thought the gas cap was faulty on mine, I get the CE light...sometimes it goes off, but sometimes it doesn't. And I have thought man, it feels like it comes off too easy. So thank you for confirming it shouldn't be that way. I just went to a dealership website and order an OEM from them. Hopefully that corrects my problem

As an import automotive technician, Toyota /Lexus gasoline caps comes with their respective tethers. Aftermarket’s gas caps do not work, go through emissions testing like we do in our area, it most likely will fail. Go OEM always regardless of the make of your vehicle.

Does it make a performance difference to do a brake bleed with techstream? Or is it OK to do without it? I deal with this all the time, I always suggest oem parts and explain it will be 2-3x the parts cost but it likely will last the same length of time as whats on the odometer when it failed. People freak when they find out a oem cv is 4-800 bucks and he oem rebuild kits are several hundred per cv so they want aftermarket cv thats under 200. Therefore I have to explain that the am cv might last a week or might last 2 years, either way they will pay the labor cost over and over even if they want the one with lifetime warranty. I even try to explain that a used CV is better than aftermarket but all they can see is that shiney lifetime warranty. You are missing out on good money and good results not offering simple frame and floorpan coatings. pressure wash out/off the loose rust/dirt/old paint then allow to dry and then apply ospho, wait 24 hrs then spray apply two coats of corroseal and your done. This method can last over a decade if the cleaning and application are done right and trust me its not rocket science. You simply keep track of materials and charge actual labor time to complete minus drying times. You will need a few things and a custom spray tube for boxed frames but that is easy enough to make yourself to work with commonly available tools.

We had a 2000 Chevy Venture van bought new. You know you are in for trouble when you had to replace passenger side tie rod ends and sway bar links every couple of years. Turns out the tie rods were dry sockets by design and the sway bar links were weak. They could not handle the rough pavement on the edge of country roads. Bottom line, we spent more on that van than it was worth a couple times over in the 11 years we owned it. If I had it to do over again I’m not sure what we would have purchased but it would not have been a GM. Our last GM was a 2007 Pontiac G6. We sold it to our daughter after 5 years and 100,000 miles. She spent a year in Minnesota with it. When she returned to VA it needed thousands in repairs due to gravel and road salt damage. At that point we sold it for very little and bought our 2013 Highlander. Still have it w/ 145,000 miles. 👍

'99 corolla with 430k and '06 is250 with 224k. I learned my lesson. Now I go to my local Toyota and Lexus dealerships and pick up the parts myself. The parts bags have my name and all the order details. A great feeling that's worth the extra dollars. I am chasing an incomplete evap I/M readiness check that has no codes. Brand new gas cap didn't help. Passed emissions so I am not pressed. Thanks for the video. The evap system is complex and this helped. Best wishes.

First! I've had good luck replacing just the rubber gasket. A simple search will find it. So cheap you can replace it many times ias needed

It's not just the gasket. Sometimes it's the internal valve itself. The fuel cap has a vent that can fail as well.

Another great video but with one concern for me. When reviewing the front end and the rust present, applying an undercoating was mentioned. If this means the black gooey sometimes rubberized spray-on stuff I'm against it. It may trap in moisture and seal in the rust. You can do something like Krown but I'm a big fan of Fluid Film. Basically apply it once and touch up annually as needed. The Navy and Coast guard have been using the stuff for decades. It has a bunch of other uses as well.

There are so many bad counterfeit parts out there now.. I tend to pick a part based on importance of operation and time or labor to replace it or how much of a pain in the butt it will be if it turns into an intermittent issue, and balance that with the cost, many times OEM is the same price or similar.... . Like a MAF sensor, very easy to fix, and won't leave you stranded.. the car will run, but in limp mode. VS a crank sensor on a chrysler.. will leave you stranded, and is a major pain in the butt to change on most of them. so OEM in that case. Chryslers are picky about sensors anyway. I have seen even some OEM parts are not as nice as they used to be. I changed the Drums brakes on my 08 Prius... The aftermarket drums DO NOT WORK.. the centering hole on them is not machined correctly, it was machined to large. So the drum does not center on the hub, and you end up with a pulsation when braking. So I went OEM drums for double the price. Even the drums from Toyota parts counter were not as nice nor were they perfect. The casting was much more rough looking than the originals, the braking surface was rougher too, and the centering hole was not as perfect.. They worked and did not cause a noticeable pulsation... but still they were not as nice as the factory original drums. I'm sure Toyota is not still making drums for a 15 year old car... they source them from somewhere too. Just a better source than a parts store has.

I've had mine for years (east Coast salt/chemicals) with a spray-on bed liner and the rails and attachment points rusted out from underneath. from what I have read...it's common from design. (even though they sprayed my frame...they wouldn't touch the bed).

Charcoal canister failed on my Corolla was around 450 cad to replace. Failed after warranty. They have made a fix for it but that costs another 200. Haven't put it on yet but I will.

I had someone come in needing a new seatbelt(pre-tensioner). He bought one from the wrecker and asked us to fit it. A quick look at it revealed it had been "deployed" already.

I have been all Toyota since 2006 (4th gen Camry and on my 2nd 4th gen 4Runner) and have always liked them. But you sir have taught me to >treasure< them. Since I do not live in the salt belt there are no rust issues and both are rust free, though the Camry does have its cosmetic issues. Contrast that to the 4Runner which is absolutely pristine. The Camry has needed lots of small pieces - missing trim clips, cracked turn signal housing, melted tail light socket, sun visor falling apart, missing retainers on the hood insulation. I've found a lot of fun in going to the local pick 'n pull to obtain OEM replacements for those pieces and the Camry is looking a lot better. Now at 270,000 miles I've come to love the Camry not for how it looks (presentable, but no show car), but for how it drives. The 5S-FE is smooth and shifts perfectly (and yes, despite repairing the plug in the cam cover, it leaks a bit). It's an absolute work horse that gets all its regular maintenance DIY - including the differential with the trans fluid service! She cruises at 80 with no vibration and one finger on the wheel. It's becoming a game to see how many miles I can get the Camry to go. 500,000 miles is my goal - at the rate it's going, it will outlive me. Thanks for your good work on this channel!

A BIG NO FOR UNDERCOATING.. YES TO FLUID FILM! UNDERCOATING WILL CRACK AND TRAP MOISTURE AND THEN.. ACCELERATED CORROSION. NEVER UNDERCOAT IF YOU WANT THE FRAME TO LIVE LONGER!

I used a standard motors product evap purge control solenoid on my 2014 tundra and the light came back on intermittently. I finally went and bought a Toyota OEM one from the dealer and the light never came back on. Use OEM guys.

AMD, what sort of undercoating would you recommend for a 2019 4Runner that is not rusty yet? A local company that I have recently talked to over the phone uses a black tar like undercoating that apparently flashes off and sets up after a period of time, Maybe it is similar to bed lining? Would you recommend something like that or would fluid film be preferable?
