Not sure what’s funnier: Richard Madeley tearing into the BBC’s font swapping exercise, or his making comparison between the BBC and Scumwall. Broadcast 20 October 2021

Kind of hating how disingenous this is. The overall rebranding costed just under £2 million, and included a complete redesign of all channel and service logos, creation of their own font, redesign of all websites and services and done in a way that finally made them united in a design stand point. Basically any service or channel the BBC offered (a lot) was completely redesigned. Of course they didnt change the main BBC logo, this is made to look like they spent £2 million on just the font. When you think about how they managed to create a theme that would work well for both UI design, their TV channels and logos, as well as a font that is both readable in articles but good looking in logos, I think its been a good example of a successful rebranding of a very large company on a small budget. There are many things to hate the BBC for, but this is one of the few things i like.

Imagine if they actually CHANGED the logo completely. You lose the brand recognition and people get mad
@nottimhortons2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. But then again, this is GMB, they’ll do anything to nail the BBC to a coffin, small or large. But it proves their absolute bias. The ITV logo looks a lot weirder then than the BBC’s logo now, and we don’t see the tabloids complaining about it. Absolute morons.
@Ja-uu9ep2 жыл бұрын
@@nottimhortons Yep. I don't LOVE some of the new BBC logos, I think the old Sounds logo was way more unique, but I guess they had to go all out.

@@Ja-uu9ep Of course, it’s a full scale uniform rebrand.
@krayon_eater2 жыл бұрын
Then why waste 'thousands' just to change it a bit?
@Ja-uu9ep2 жыл бұрын
@@krayon_eater Because they didn't own the font for the old logo, and were spending a lot every year to license it. And the rebrand extended to to completely remaking all the idents, the new icons and animations and a general new style to continue with.

I love how no eyelids were batted when CBBC changed its logo in 2016 to a weird abstract app-icon looking thing.
@michaelw92856 ай бұрын
Probably because the new CBBC icon was designed by James Mobbs, who at the time was an internal BBC employee based at Childrens and News and Current Affairs. This new logo for the BBC was designed by Dalton Maag, and was an extra cost on top of BBC Reith which had been completed and paid for.

I wish they just bought the font of the old BBC logo so they can't go with this "Reithification" of their identity.
@ItsRickysChannelSHORTS2 жыл бұрын
And then tax payers complain that they are spending unnessessary money. Gill Sans is a premium font while Reith is a custom made font designed especially for the BBC. Otherwise the BBC would have to pay money every year to continue using it.

Even the American ABC logo changing it's logo since August 2021. My opinion on this and ABC logo is one of the most WHAT THE FUCKiest oversimplifying logos.

Whenever a company has an employee, or an internal group, who start yammering about updating the "tired old logo" and going for a "cleaner, more modern look", security should be called and the said employee or group should be taken out back, beaten into unconsciousness, and then fired.

@TheDaveWoods2 жыл бұрын
Just come across this but the "new" font is actually called Reith and is copyrighted to the BBC rather than the previous one. The reband also included the other strands such as iplayer Sounds TV and radio bitesize websites etc so whilst GMB were having a bit of fun (and why not after all they are rivals) it is just more than the 3 blocks of letters.

Very much deliberate! They used a BBC soundtrack because it’s a segment about the BBC - the fact that it’s the News 24 countdown is probably just because it’s aunty Beeb’s most iconic bit of music. :)
