This story is very important, because it shows that many people can see dictators as good politicians and saviors of their nation from problems, but people can still choose to save lives, not destroy them. Wilhelm Hosenfeld is example of man who chose to do what's right in extra hard times for many people and in nation that nurtured and idolised brutality against other people

Yes, as a German, I wish I would've also learned about people like him in school and not just about the atrocities committed by the Nazis. History class in school has taught me, not to become a nazi, which of course is important, but by also teaching about people like Hosenfeld and many others like him, it could've provided role models and teach students not only to not be evil, but to be a force for good and actively fight evil.

It causes me great pain to say this, but no good deeds go unpunished and yes, life can be most cruel and unfair. This man tried to do what he could in the position that he was in to help out those who were being persecuted and mistreated in ways too cruel to imagine and comprehend. I just wished that he could have fled westward back into Germany and escaped the advance of the Soviet Red Army instead of being captured by it and having to endure a slow, painful and agonizing death at the hands of his Soviet captors. I never would have believed that an actual German Army officer and official member of the Nazi party could have gone completely against his own army and government and risked truly horrible consequences for himself and his family if his actions were discovered by his fellow Germans for helping out Jews and Poles in occupied Warsaw during WW 2 and decades later being officially proclaimed as "righteous among the nations" by the government of Israel.
