Great video. Definitely agree about "gotcha" content. It doesn't particularly change minds or educate. I want to change culture, not bask in superiority of ideology. TikTok is a poison for the mind. People just don't realize how valuable the ability to focus, truly is. Degrading the focus of kids is offering us a horrible future. Sometimes we shouldn't get what we want. Especially as kids. We need to reconnect with the elements of humanity that drive us forward, not prey on the ones that make us vulnerable.

I find it particularly annoying that there seems to be a social incentive for people to express ideological opinions on social media, when they get validated through likes or shares, or sort of "negative validation" through dislikes, negative comments, negative shares, or lack thereof. As someone who didn't grow up entirely immersed in/surrounded by social media, this culture of validating people's worth online by how they interact online is annoying and saddening to me.
@jonl8016
@jonl8016 Жыл бұрын
@@kmgyening The dissociation of online life is definitely saddening. People acting a role in front of each other, that doesn't match life, and being rewarded for it. That's gotta be bad for us. What I find especially discouraging is that we don't have many community mechanisms for incentivizing valuable real world behaviors. We have handed over everything that matters to the government and then complain when it isn't done right. Where communities adopt the responsibilities, there is no space for government to abuse them. It's when we relegate our duties to each other, to politicians, whose primary incentives are based on re-election, that everything spirals. We don't need "Big Daddy Government". We need responsible adults in our communities. Single parenthood should never have been a political issue. Homelessness and widows and orphans could have been addressed by communities (and all of these still can be). This "Age of Relegation" is the perfect time for us to form tight knit communities that focus on doing good - for ourselves and each other. It's not about charity. It's about ecosystems that protect the weak by default and reward value creation of all types. We won't ever achieve that at a macro level. We have to start at the micro. We have to build nodes. Blocks in a physical "blockchain" of communities that create value and support each other. An important element, for a variety of reasons, is physical proximity. We need to find people like us, and build near them, and then with them. We need to develop financial buoys for ourselves (and eventually anchors) and raise our floor as we progress. When I fully establish my "financial anchor", I will be able to take as many risks as I want, and if I fail, I will fall only to a sustainable lifestyle where I owe nothing and produce all my necessities. That is the foundation that freedom loving communities need. Then we can change the world.

I'm a high school teacher. Social media like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. are an absolute cancer destroying teenager's perceptions of reality. I am routinely stunned by the stuff I hear kids talking about, or the beliefs they hold, and so much of it comes from TikTok. Add to that the lack of attention span, the declining interest in "touching grass," and a willingness to spend more time on a phone than with friends and It's truly frightening.

Way I see it the Internet allows us to see the normal sane people, from the weirdos on a global scale. Also it means the media can't lie anymore lol. The media will say life is awful in Russia or Syria or say Rwanda. Oh yeah? How about I simply ask someone who lives there then? See you couldn't do that 30, 40, 50 years ago you couldn't, but you can now. Way I see it? It's opened people's eyes to the world around them and allowed people like Lauren to spread common sense to millions, if that's a bad thing then I think you need to reevaluate what is right and wrong.

I'm 70. I remember that world, the one before the internet. I'm now stuck in the one since. One of those gave me a life that was indeed only the best life ever. The other makes me wish I had never taken up space on this wretched planet. So only this: Young lady, you are wise beyond your years. You stay safe and be well.

Despite being the almost polar opposite of you politically, and a 45 year old male, I've followed your content since the start. Your level of self awareness is admirable! Totally agree with your stance here, I've long argued about the negative influence of the internet. Unfortunately I feel that there's no caging the beast now it's unleashed. You ban Tik Tok then people will just move somewhere else. As you stated, nuking the internet would be the best solution.

Naw, I think email, online banking, etc. things like that are still useful tools of the internet. Nuking the internet implies those things would go away as well.

Dear Lauren, I'm 71 years old and my younger, productive years were pre-internet and pre-cellphone. Can you imagine being on the road, depending on paper maps and being completely out of touch with the folks back home until you check in (with the help of a long-distance operator) from a pay or motel phone? Well, that was my life for decades. I couldn't even imagine a day when instant worldwide information, navigation, and communication was riding around with me in my car at my fingertips. Plus, I can order obscure items online that are not in any of my local stores. I love the internet! I just wish it was around when I was young! Yeah sure, the freaks have taken over, but think about it, don't they always historically take over society if we allow it?

Oh there are aspects of the internet that are great for sure! As you’ve described. I just think the social part has been crippling for us as humans. Being able to use GPS maps to enhance getting to your friends house faster is great. Never going to your friends house because you can just FB message life updates is a disaster. Appreciate you watching and your input :)

I am 39 years old so I remember the pre internet times as well. I love the internet too,I think it's the crazies as well as the misuse of social media that ruined it.I use Facebook to schedule real life meetings with my friends,not to replace them. The younger generations have become mentally and socially crippled because of that.

what I honestly believe is the following: I'm a tad on the elder side of life as well. and it used to be for ages that the currently "young" generation went all nuts and are a sure indicator for life (as we know it) going under. ancient Greek philosopher already noticed that some 2,500 years ago. but so far, once rebellious, irresponsible twenty year olds often turned or "converted" into more mature versions of themselves by the age of forty. there's a decent chance, this might happen yet another one more time again. this also explains how conservative parties have quite the higher average voter's age. young people tend to think, this is an indicator of them being the "right or correct" future and conservatives are about to die out (I used to think this, lol). but they simply don't realize that their views are likely to change over/with time. especially men in their mid forties can get an epiphany moment and switch sides. it's just a possibility. I know that potentially irreversible brain damage might not help much with that.

_The internet should be dismantled_ JCD I’ve gone back to the original social media. Wireless telegraphy. That’s right. Morse code. I went and got my ham radio license reinstated. People are so much nicer, than other online platforms, and we never discuss politics. The limitations are it’s charm. My online social media, news media, and propaganda consumption consists of 5 minutes or so of doom scrolling meme pages while I take a dump in the morning. No news sites, almost no social media, no television, Netflix, Foxtel, no commercial print media or radio, nothing like that. Correspondence with friends is often via email (how I received the link to this video), text, or an outright phone call. Pretty much music, and hobby related content. I’m the happiest I have been. We need to learn how to communicate again. Person to person.

Hey Lauren, thanks for the honesty. I'm with you about the internet. I purposely make videos so long that it means you are there for meaningful dialogue not propaganda or the lulz. And thanks for owning up to some of your early shenanigans. I didn't start really paying attention to you until phase 2 of your internet career. After you had been somewhat chastened and taken a more real world perspective. And indeed most social media sites have algorithms to addict us to the drift of the screen. Continue to question the reality, or rather this unreality, of the screenal landscape. Might I suggest Jacques Ellul's books on technology: The Technological Society, The Technological System, The Technological Bluff, The Political Illusion, and Propaganda, which though older books and a bit tough to read, remain completely crucial to an understanding of our current insanity. Perhaps the best place to enter his labyrinth is a book which blends his theological ideas (he was a Christian) with his sociological work; The Humiliation of the Word, which details the destruction of the Word by living a visual screened existence. Thanks from the far side of the globe.

Yeah I believe that's where that old quote "Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times" comes from. We're basically doomed to repeat history no matter how many understand it. Its like trying to train your child not to repeat your mistakes, but they do. And it isnt until they experience it first hand that they understand your intent.

Thank you for all that you do Lauren. Truly, as someone who has wanted to become a filmmaker since as young as I can remember, your documentaries have inspired me and helped me become interested and passionate in topics that I wouldn't have ever touched had I not known about you. Also, it seems there is a lack of empathy in the conservative sphere when talking about people. It seems that a lot of the time, politics overshadows the humanity of certain topics, and I wanted to applaud you for being as compassionate as you are towards people, even people who some might consider 'enemies'. We definitely need more of that these days. Compassion, forgiveness, and understanding. Anyways, God bless you and keep doing what you're doing 👍
