Netflix's Good Times cartoon is nothing short of a confusing, hot mess. It takes the name sake of an iconic show but doesn't follow in it's footsteps, only to trail way off path into shallow jokes, terrible stereotypes, and poor pacing in its attempt to touch on anything political.

Thank you for falling on your sword for us and watching this “series”. You’re absolutely right when you say that people like me, who grew up watching the original “Good Times”, would hate this show. They lost me at the drug-dealer baby (blatantly stolen from Dave Chapelle) and I couldn’t watch any more. I know it’s tough out there for actors, but they should all think about returning their salaries in protest.

A lot of people say that no one knows how to take a joke anymore but the reality is that no one knows how to make a joke without it being at someone else’s expense. At least with Rick and Morty, no one specifically feels like they’re being attacked which is why I like the show. If anything, the show comments on certain types of people, no matter what human race, alien race, gender, or age you are. This makes me want to rewatch Family Matters. I used to watch that show at my grandparents house, and I loved it! Carl Winslow was such a great dad, and you could tell how much he cared about his kids. Also, Steve Urkel was one of the funniest characters I'd ever seen back then. I think my favorite moment was when he had a positive reaction to being rejected by Laura, and the super specific answer he gave her when she questioned him about it. "This time you said no way Steve. Last time, you said no way Turbo Nerd. I'm wearing you down, baby!"

Thank you for watching all of the show to give a review. This was my first video of yours and I found it really entertaining while also being educational on the subject and I appreciate that. I also agree with your recommendation on South Side. South Side is hilarious and it's a shame not enough people know about it. I think my biggest gripe with Good Times is that it could've benefited from being it's own thing and some tweaks in the writing. It doesn't have to be a Good Times cartoon, it could've been anything. I feel like it's connection to the series tarnishes Good Times as a whole. (I never fully watched Good Times, it's something my grandparents had on in the background so excuse me if that last part is unnecessary?) But I also feel this way about Mindy Kaling's Velma series. Both Velma and Good Times could've been their own standalone series and probably would've benefited from that. Anyways, thanks for reading my ramble and thanks for the video

It's just baffling that none of the people involved saw the backlash coming. If they wanted to do stereotypical satire they could have used a show that wasn't one of the big iconic milestones for representation. Every minority group has some media that holds importance in this way, showcasing them beyond stereotypes at a time when they were not portrayed properly, so it just comes off extremely obviously offensive to take a show like that and try and turn it into the complete opposite. I just don't get what anyone involved could have been thinking with this.

So many shows these days have what I call "XBox Kid Syndrome", where they're desperate to prove they're one of the 'big kids' so they say and do all this edgy crap that makes them look like a fool instead of just being themselves and seeing if it works.

i feel like the show is for people who don't really associate with any black people on a casual or work related level and only has stereotypical views of black people from media, these kinds of people would love this show, most other people including myself, not so much.

In a Mechwarrior tabletop campaign, I was told directly by the Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission to stop using the television show Family Guy for the purpose of interrogating and torturing prisoners of war. So I'm quite sure that Seth McFarlane was the one that fucked this shit up.

YO Bruh Hab Oh! Stop saying that there's a connection between the 1970s sitcom and this garbage! I appreciate you taking "one for the team" by watching the episodes. This is "Bamboozled" in animation! I see you've done some viewing of the 70 sitcom and mention a good brief synopsis which is good but you could've taken the dive just a little deeper. The late Esther Rolle(Florida Evans) fought tooth and nail to have a two-parent household in the Good Times series and won which is why we had the great John Amos(James Evans Sr.) on the set! Two events in particular spelled the beginning of the end for Good Times. The first was J.J. (Jimmie Walker) became the "breakout star" of the 70s series, and the writers started dumbing his character down further and taking the focus away from the family dynamic, much to disdain of Rolle and Amos who protested this during the run of the series. The second was John Amos wanted more money and other demands for his role and Norman Lear wouldn't give it to him. Rather than going to the bargaining table, they just(as your "spoiler alert" puts it) killed off his character at his Mississippi job, which by the way gives us the iconic "Damn, Damn, Damn" quote which was actually what Rolle felt in killing off the two-parent household she insisted in the series! After Amos' departure, they tried to patch up the sinking ship the best they could but at least in the end, the made it out of Cabrini Green! Good Times and later The Jeffersons were high points in our lives, on screen and otherwise and to have narrative be damned in one animation series and isn't kinda ironic that we've just celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original series!?

Hey, thanks for watching the video and commenting. I wanted to address some of your points since you took the time to write this whole thing out. Bamboozled - I wouldn't even compare it to that film. FD Signifier did a brilliant deep dive into that movie, it's purpose and meaning --- I'd highly recommend you check it out, I think you'll enjoy it. The Connection - While there isn't much written information out on this show right now, there are direct references to specific characters. The show is 4 generations removed from the original family with James being mentioned specifically during a pool game. Both Bernadette Stanis and Jimmie Walker also have small cameos, one episode each. History - As I mentioned in the video, this wasn't a deep dive retrospective of the original series. However, I am very well aware of its origins and a few other tidbits. Though, I didn't know that John Amos wanted more money, it's unfortunate that they couldn't reach a deal. I'll definitely look more into that! Anniversary/Legacy - It does make me wonder about Norman Lear's involvement with this animated series, which I want to do more research on. I just can't fathom him being okay with any of this, unless he was duped. I'm sure the answers will lay with Carl Jones' departure, for sure.

Not sure if you mentioned it, but James died in Good Times because he was tired of the shucking and jiving of JJ and wanted them to showcase the talents of the other children and he also wanted his character to have a job and a few other humanizing things.

This is 100% the fault of the Netflix executives. They ordered a Seth MacFarlane cartoon and that's what they got. It was never going to be an appropriate or justified use of the source material.
