It could be a reference to Dragon Ball Z's popularity in Mexico, but there were plenty of Dragon Ball references in other Disney shows like Amphibia, and speaking as an actual Latin American I'd say making a reference to Dragon Ball is kind of basic level, there's plenty of anime popular in Latin America, like Saint Seiya, Ranma ½, Sakura Cardcaptor, Pokémon, or more modern shows like Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. I've seen plenty of people wearing anime t-shirts from series like One Piece or even Berserk, anime in general has always been popular in LatAm

In spanish is quite common to give nicknames based on their names because it was often simplified since many tend to get a bit long, and since words evolve there also become into names. For example if someone name is José Antonio is likely to have Pepe as a nickname, if your name was María Dolores or María Concepción you are likely to be called Lola or Concha (it actually means seashell, but in some countries is use as a slur to mean vulva) and so on. In the case of Nacho is a nickname for people called Ignacio, because is from latin name Ignatius, which in italian became Iganazio (branching into today's Ignacio), then is pronounce Iganachio, to then end as Nacho. The same happens in english, Peggy is a common nickname that came from Megan or Meggy, which at the same time comes from Margaret. @@skibot9974

Such as cuisine, music, and holidays being our only defining thing, and heavily rely on it to be "WOW look at how quirky these people are" when in reality most of us are more than those stereotypes. If you like the show cool, but the backlash was deserved for flanderizing an entire people to be just these tropes or they aren't that culture at all. I'm Mexican-American and honestly thought some of the backlash was warranted. The name of the neighborhood and improper Spanish was just bad. By far the worst thing was the va getting defensive and claimed pride in not knowing Spanish calling it "OUR" language. What!? I don't speak great Spanish either, but I wouldn't consider that a good or bad thing or "Mexican-American culture." There's unique culture in speaking both English and Spanish, and relatable experiences/memes in not being fluent in Spanish and having difficulty conversing with family, but it's not anything to smuggly brag about like she did. I do also think the show's premise is overall lackluster though and was never anything that'd be likely to takeoff. "Big latino" isnt really as innovative or interesting as people think it is for a story. And the character design just feels like stereotypes. Not necessarily bad, but boring. At worst I hate how the more stereotypical Mexican looking cousins speak broken English and are dumber, while the two white ones are the "smart ones." It wasn't worth getting that much backlash, but also isnt anything worth defending or supporting either. Just a mid show overall.

I remember reading somewhere that writers and storyboarders for Loud House were constantly reminded that the siblings had to be together and have a small role in each episode so they would be relevant in some way. It's really apparent when they stopped doing that and started singling out each character, the show feels really different afterwards. Primos should have handled it in some similar way, like forming small groups and focusing on them for each episode.

It's true that Nacho is just a nickname for people called Ignacio, but as a Spanish-speaker, I've never heard anyone calling a woman "Gordita" as en endearing nickname, usually people call someone "el gordo" or "la gorda" behind their backs. However, I'm not Mexican, perhaps it's more common for Mexicans to use "Gordita" as an endearing nickname, though I think they usually use the word "Gordis" instead

the situation was just b r o w n fragility top to bottom. The creator is self conscious about being a hafie cause of restless bulling and harassment from Mexicans accusing her of not being Mexican enough her whole life so she makes this show to go "see Im just as Mexican as you guys" and Mexicans and La Raza members in general jumped on to attack her for not being b r o w n enough because they are resentful she is part w h I t e so they pretend a they care about the purity of their language that has so many dialects people who speak it cant understand understand each other out side their own country

@pablocasas59065 ай бұрын
As someone living in South America, is the term Chicano used in the U.S. to refer to people of Latin American descent? Because in the pitch bible for Primos they never use the term Chicano, instead they use words like Latino and Latinx

Chicanos on a shortbus
@allendepacheco34195 ай бұрын
@@pablocasas5906 So the term Chicano is kinda outdated as many Hispanic descendants in the US wanted to be identified as Latinos along with the rest of Latin America. Chicanos differs greatly where you can have someone who is indistinguishable from a local in their homeland and someone who's completely assimilated into white American society but still have a Spanish name. There's also the fact that some generations tend to be diluted of their Hispanic background while others continue to preserve their traditions. So collectively, we want to be called Latinos but if we were to differentiate ourselves from other Latinos, then we use Chicanos. It's likely the pitch bible use Latino because the creator see herself as part of the greater Latino culture in Latin America like many other Chicanos. As for the Latinx thing. Either she wants to appease the executives (who might be majorly white) for more inclusivity or she's more anglo and the term is normal to get. Latinx is a controversial word among Chicanos, but it also shows the best example of two separate cultures are conflicting with each other. Many of us don't like it because one is putting English rules in a Spanish word instead of learning Spanish from the get go but some don't mind because the US promotes more individualistic identity. It's a very heated topic that I'm not the right person to explain it properly.

@@leviticusprime4904 Eh, I'd argue that compared to something like Megamind Rules and Velma trampling over a pre-existing IP in the worst possible ways, this show being nothing to write home about is a good thing for some people, like finding a small piece of clean food in a trash can.
@calamityradio5 ай бұрын
@@VigilanteLuluWhile I do definitely agree that those shows you mentioned are awful, I would argue that there's a difference between a mediocre original IP and a mediocre reboot/remake/etc. The Scooby-Doo IP has a ton of mediocre movies and shows under its belt, but there's been enough good that we don't mind it. And Velma is so far the worst thing yet, so we can appreciate those mediocre ones for just not being Velma. Oye Primos is its own IP, and if a first outing is pretty meh, it's not going to bring people back like a new not-Velma Scooby-Doo series would.

@@calamityradio I mean compared to most animation that has been shown this year, Primos, while not a masterpiece by ANY stretch, isn't too bad. Compared to Megamind's "comeback", it's a clean piece of original IP food in a trashcan of subpar reboots.

I think there's an issue people are overlooking and is that the term "latino" is too wide for its own good. I know this is a show about mexican-americans, but marketing teams are lazy mf so they use "latino" and call it a day. If I (mexican born, raised and living in Mexico) feeling like I have little in common with a Mexican-american, imagine an Argetinian. But we all 3 are "latinos", sure we have more in common than idk, someone from Norway. But we also have big cultural differences that make our cultures rich, that often get ignored bcs yknow latinos=tacos
@blobbem5 ай бұрын
The problem is that generalisation is a thing that happens so damn often, and it happens towards practically everyone on the planet. Like how I've seen Americans group all of Europe together, or how the entirety of the African continent is treated as if it was a single country. Even people within a singular country can often feel as though they have a different culture towards each other, like the ever present North-South divide of the UK. I can kinda understand why marketing teams become lazy in their usage of labels as there's just an insane amount of different cultures out there, but there is a thing as being _too_ lazy. They probably should've just stuck with marketing this show as having a "Mexican-American" background and left it at that.
