On our locomotives we had dynamic braking which put resistance to the traction motors going downhill instead of dragging train brakes and wearing out , overheating brakes. It was progressive so you could apply more or less resistance to control train. It however shedded the heat out of the dynamic braking grids was not regenerative as there was no large battery pack to put anything into. Works really well and makes a cool wwwwaaaaaas sound when in full dynamic, you had to be careful of buff forces with all the train pushing into the head end especially on curves you could push rail out and derail. This is where distributed power helped with locomotives also in middle or end of train to mitigate buff and draft force as well as getting air to braking system on a cold Canadian winter day.
@MontanaMedic13Ай бұрын
That's very interesting. I had never considered how much force that could apply to the tracks and how it could push out the rails on a curve.

Steve in terms of getting used to one pedal driving let me tell you as a guy who spends most of his time in a peterbilt dump truck the one pedal driving in my lightning was a quick learn since the pete has the good ol jake break. @truck King Great review and interview. Probably the best review I have seen on EV truck towing. I see the tongue weight listed as 1000lbs in your video at 18 min 42 sec. I also noticed the payload is 1450 lbs, but the specs everywhere say 1350lbs. The payload is significantly lower than other EV trucks. Once you add the driver and two passengers, you will barely be able to put anything else in the truck. Wondering if you see the payload capacity of only 1350-1450 lbs as an issue for this truck.

@volvo09 I saw some Tesla fan in another video complaining that it's inefficient and that other EV trucks are more efficient. I dont think they understand that trucks are, by nature, inefficient as daily drivers in order to do what they are actually built to do efficiently. If you build an aerodynamic, efficient daily driver focused truck, you have not built a truck but a car with a bed, a Ute as the Australians would say. There's nothing wrong with Utes either. Sometimes you just need a bed for big or messy items. A true truck, however, needs to not wheeze while towing and lose a significant portion of range because you put a giant box with the aerodynamics of a brick behind it.

Full self driving creates more stress than it saves: Dozens of vehicles in self driving mode have resulted in major crashes resulting in in serious injuries and deaths.
@mikeg81755 күн бұрын
I would disagree. The self-driving feature helps with speed control and lane keeping, so not as much concentration on input is required. Much like the old cruise control, the driver had to watch how fast the vehicle was catching up to the vehicle in front. The driver still has to pay attention and has responsibility. But operating the GPS or radio while driving feels much safer because the driver is being helped. I would suspect that more accidents are caused by driver inattention without help than with help.

@@icare7151 Obviously self-driving is not there yet, and my crystal ball is certainly not perfect, but we kill somewhere around 35,000 people a year in car crashes without self-driving. I think like a lot of vehicle choices, one has to look at what the vehicle is being used for. In my opinion, EV trucks are basically 1500/F150 vehicles. To be used around town or on short trips towing. I tow a big 5th wheel with a 3500 Silverado. No one makes an EV truck that can do that job yet. For the way most people use half ton vehicles, and EV truck is a smart move. Will save you money over the long run, and be way more fun.

There are a lot of very wealthy people around there towing their expensive show pony trailers to the local horse parks. They'll all see no problem in this $100K 100 mile EV. : ) They still pay the transporter to show up with the goose neck behind the Super Duty. Black can hide a lot of sins in the body of a vehicle, but I'm starting to think this is not a bad look. Does it have a tow mirror option? It depends upon how long it takes to charge that 200kWh+ pack from say 5% to 75% (when the rate of charge drops below 190kW) On the Silverado EV, that's about 33-35 minutes. Not bad. I'm comfortable with a 40 minute stop every 3 hours of towing.

5:10 & 17:15 it seems an obvious advantage to have the charging port in the same location as the Tesla's so that GMC customers can easily back in and charge at the 1000s of Tesla Superchargers. What % of the time is towing vs % of the time not-towing? 95+% not towing? Also pulling straight in if the port was passenger side front would leave the trailer more than likely blocking a lane.

Great review and shared sentiment regarding towing with an EV. I disagree and think that the left-rear is the best placement for the charge port because backing-in allows for: - greater safety due to better visibility - getting out of dodge quicker in case of an emergency (the Japanese are taught to back into parking spaces) - looks cooler when parked - when charging cable and post location means better accessibility and people not having to manage the cable to avoid trips / potential falls - at commercial locations, it supports back-in policies Pull-through chargers here and are scaling, so I see towing with an EV to not be an issue.
@TroySavaryАй бұрын
Passenger side is best place for the port, whether front or back, since it allows charging at street side parking. Could not care less how, well that works with Tesla, chargers.

I've got one and I love it. The only problem is that it's not a Tesla! No FSD (Super Cruse sucks), software is horrible, no phone as a key, infotainment is too complicated and hard to use. How hard should it be to copy Tesla with everything but FSD? How hard is it to get people off the street and see how they struggle using the product? @@minergate4066 Not at all a bad comparison. Your term junk denotes something that is terrible and is no longer useful. From the review you probably should have watched all the way through; with the exception of what end the charging port should be, the Sierra is a far superior towing vehicle to any similar sized truck. China, like Europe does not have half-ton sized trucks. Cheap EVs are possible because of the much lower R&D required but you will also notice that the heavy duty applications the Sierra is required to do a Chinese EV would not have a chance in accomplishing. The Cybertruck uses similar build techniques to Chinese EVs and we know how well the Cybertruck fairs in towing and hard work. Moral of the day. Don't use broad strokes. We can all agree that with the Silverado and Sierra, this is the very first attempt at a General Motors EV truck that can do truck stuff. I would say that when it was thought up many years ago to what we see today as a real vehicle, it is a pretty amazing accomplishment of how much it can replace an ICE truck. The Cypertruck in the same vein has turned out to be more fragile than what Americans would normally accept. Imagine what the 2nd and later generations of the Silverado and Sierra will be.
