Humorous reenactment of an article titled "The Good Wife's Guide," rumored to have been published in the May 13, 1955 issue of Housekeeping Monthly. There is speculation whether it was a hoax made for office circulation and watercooler conversation. I just found it to be so funny and thought it would be a funny video, so I directed and edited this piece back in 2004.

I'm the worst house wife in the world. I'm home just because of the pandemic. BUT, when my husband arrives home, if I receive him with a big smile and a hug, he feels happier. If I put on some lipstick he would notice and say "oh, you look pretty today" (though to be fair, he says that often). When you're happy to see your spouse, it shows. When you're happy to be at home, it also shows. And it's awesome.

I know, good thing the video is a joke. Shame about the woman who believe they are that worthless they need to let a man walk all over them and treat them like scum to get respect. I work, my partner works, I clean the house, we share the cooking, if he goes out without letting me know and doesn't come home, I call the police because he could of been killed in a car accident. life today cannot be lived as it was in the 50s, it's called equality and diversity.

@SteelCowGirl4Ever

To each and her own. I would rather be an independent adult woman who can provide for herself wherever necessary. If you become too dependent on your boyfriend or husband, it's more like a father-daughter relationship as you are acting more the role of a child. The same would go for any man who refuses to wash his own laundry or make his own meals. You're supposed to be his wife and loving companion. -Not his replacement Mommy.

@SteelCowGirl4Ever
@SteelCowGirl4Ever 3 жыл бұрын
@@SlyDellian Definitely not angry or hateful. I just don't agree with the idea of adults acting like they're still children by not being able to do what they should be able to do for themselves as grown adults. As a grown woman, you go to work and earn your own living to cover your own expenses like you're supposed to. (We learn this by the age of 16 if we want a car to get around in). Right? And when you're a grown man you do your own laundry, cook your own meals and clean up after yourself. (It's that simple). The whole concept to coming-of-age in life is to be (independent). -Not codependent.

Ok so I'm a guy who isn't really picky about gender, but I wouldn't ever want my partner to treat me like this. When I get home I want to hear about their day too and I wouldn't want them to have to be picking up my messes all the time. If there's something bothering them I want to know, not have them sit there silently listening to me complain. And I definitely wouldn't want them to have to sit up waiting for me for hours or try to look good for me when I get home, that's not necessary at all. I'd just want them to be themselves for me and if that person is a mess sometimes that's ok. A relationship built on honest communication is much better than one where one partner's needs are placed above the others.

Finally! A REAL man speaks up! I've been waiting. Thank you! My objection to this whole thing was the extreme double standard. Telling the woman to keep her troubles to herself because her feelings don't matter? Expecting her to sit back quietly, obey willingly, dare not question a man who stays out til all hours of the night without so much as a phone call, then happily continue to wait on him hand and foot without question because he has the right to disrespect her in such a manner??? Telling her she has no right to question him and he can do as he likes with absolutely no regard for her or her feelings, not to mention respect?!? Nope. Sorry. No fricking way! That's where I draw the line. A submissive woman is not a doormat. Nor is she a lesser person. And any man who treats her that way is not a man, in my book. He is certainly not a king, and he has no right to expect to be treated as such. God did want certain things of us. He wanted women to submit to their husbands out of honor. But He also wanted men to lead their households and to honor their wives. Nowhere does He say that a woman's feelings don't matter. Nor does He say she is to be mistreated and disrespected and that men can disregard her simply as their right for being a man. I have no problem with a woman being submissive to her husband if, A. that is her choice, and B. he deserves it. Any man who is a REAL man knows that if he wants to be treated like a king, he'd better darned well treat his wife like a queen. And no self-respecting woman should ever settle for less. A lot of men these days don't know how to lead. Some don't even want to. Yet others are just lazy narcissists who want the bragging rights of having a woman submit to them. These are the ones women need to steer clear of. Ladies, if your choice is to submit to your man, then by all means, do so and do so lovingly and with my blessings. But please, ladies... make sure that man deserves it. Don't fall for the misconception that all men deserve this honor. They don't. Make sure you find yourselves a good man who is worth your honor and respect. How will you know? You will know because he will honor and respect you, too.

It was very stressful and my life is much more peaceful now that I cater to almost entirely women clients. Whatever someone wants to do with their life is their choice, but again, don't come bitching and whining when reality strikes and you regret everything you did. @SteelCowGirl4Ever then don't complain at what that "freedom" gives you when your 40,50,60,70 years old. Men control relationships and women control sex. @@Tarhockey33The lifestyle I've chosen for myself has more than worked out just fine. I started working when I was 11 years old. Was given my first wallet and opened up my first savings account by the age of 15. Got my first truck at 17, went off to college to major in Science and now have a full-time career in it. Why? (Because that's life for everybody as they mature into adulthood). We all have goals to accomplish, and bills to pay for things like a phone, a car, food and eventually a place to live. For women that don't prefer the idea of having children and being a housewiife, keeping our legs closed is easy enough to do (when guys know how to take the word "NO" for an answer). But because most of them don't, we've had gainfull access to a wonderful thing called; "birth control" for many centuries. That's how I've been rolling since I hit puberty, (because it was my own personal decision).I went to school with many girls that became pregnant at 17 and ended up quite miserable. So they served as the leading example of everything not to do with my own life pretty much. And I honestly couldn't be happier. 😎👌

Laughed until I saw the reactions people had to women saying they enjoy being a housewife. Honestly it is hard work, I am in charge of making money for my home yes, but my wife is amazing she does everything else for our house to function and she works on occasion as well, I help in the house do homework with kids too, laundry and cook. We are a team and each house has their own system. No one knows how your life works better than you and your partner. Just because they are housewives never means they are less than the man. They are masters of the house, caretakers, lovers, cooks, cleaning champions, organizers, mothers, decorators, and so much more. Most people only do a couple of aspects of what these women do, they can take care of themselves and everyone around them. No reason for another woman to ask why they would chose that path because most of them could not do half of what a homemaker can do, even for themselves. I could go on but honestly it is probably impossible to change people’s opinion with a KZbin comment, I just want to salute you homemakers, you are true pillars of your world.

My partner reminds me that he is too busy w/ his business matters, delegating his staff, comparing the investment, and housing market. So, I try my best to consider if my ideas and thoughts are as imperative to his... and they aren't. Sometimes, I simply want to vent about my nearly non-existent social life. And unintentionally, I forget that he is the breadwinner and should be treated as such. I truly try my best to refrain from speaking what is on my mind unless necessary to verbally notate. I don't agree. As a woman and therefore a grown adult, I've never understood this concept. I'm a full-time laboratory technician working in the study of genetics and ancestry at a clinical laboratory. It's how I keep gas in my truck, make my living and pay all my bills. I didn't go off to college and major in science for nothing. So why would I be at home doing nothing but cooking and cleaning? 🤷‍♀️ Fact: Not every man wants to be a husband or father. Well likewise, not every woman wants to be a mother or a stay-at-home housewife. Everyone gets to make that personal choice when it comes to their own lifestyle.

I look forward to the day when what a man says or wants to talk about will be so much more important then anything I want to talk about (sarcasm) lol 😂 I so want to be a mindless robot that cleans and listens to my house boss . Sounds delightful lol 😂. I have nothing against housewives - I just don't ever want to be forced to be a mindless opinion-less house slave

He better be going hungry if he ain't eating what she made or at least making his own I dont even think in the 1950s a woman would allow that I dunno maybe it's just my family or the uk in general but the woman would probably curse him out and tell him to bugger off. And would definitely yell at him for coming home late if not definitely question that.

Guys, quit fighting. If a person holds a certain belief, then let them believe it. It doesn't mean that you have to do what they believe in. Everyone has their individual beliefs and if they are happy with it, then who are you to say otherwise?

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables. During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction. Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him. Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember his topics of conversation are more important than yours. Don't greet him with complaints and problems. Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work. Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice. Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him. A good wife always knows her place.

Yeaaahhh.... sorry, but I'm not doing any of that. When I get home from a long day at work, me being the lady of the household is every bit as much entitled to a hot meal at the end of a long hard day's work. If it weren't for me, not me or my boyfriend would be living all that comfortably right now. We have everything we have right now because of me and my full-time job serving in the automotive industry. Even if I could afford to stay home, none of that would be the sort of life that I desire for myself. And it certainly wouldn't be what my guy would want for me. I like having a happy, productive and respectful role in society every day. And when I'm not at work, all of my hobbies involve being outdoors: Everything from shooting guns and fishing, to riding my motorcycle and raising chickens. And I wouldn't trade any of that for a dull life spent at home doing nothing but mindless chores that nobody appreciates. Besides, females are known for putting a greater physical effort into putting life on this planet than a males ever will. Hands down. That all takes some pretty serious mental and physical endurance. So if anything, I'm the one that's being served up a nice juicy grilled steak dinner and bubble bath in the evening. And never having my day questioned unless I feel like talking about it. Lol

"His topics of conversation are more important than yours." That kitchen sink is NOT fixing itself. I'm a woman so surely I'd be too weak to do it. But in seriousness, I remember going over this in my AP English class junior year. All the girls agreed there were some things that we could do from the article, but not everything. It's funny, because of the jokes we made to the ones we didn't like at all. I wouldn't mind living like that, the only things I ask for are respect, my writing career, and the right to be independent if my "loving husband" isn't. Who wants to be bogged down by family and friends saying you can't live without a spouse when living with them does more harm than leaving? Even though the article is said to be fake, a true thing is the myth men talk less than women. Men talk more. It has been proven, especially concerning the myth that since men talk less, what they say is more important and meaningful. Unless he's with his buddies. Then they are useless, depending on his character.

Mekayla Thomas I can understand, perhaps it needs to be said that, like in my marriage, I come home and my husband's words are more important to me than mine. But by the same token, he sees my words as more important than his. He is a rare kind of man but when a human being is this respectful, gracious and kind, he deserves respect and honor and in this day and age, a medal. He says I'm the best thing that ever happened to him. His love healed my twice abused, twice divorced, heart. I wish I had him 1st, there'd have been no need for any other!!!

Very funny, thanks! I remember this guide. I have seen it in several places including a clipping from the original magazine that my mom had saved from when she was a young woman. Even then, it caused a bit of a backlash among certain readers. My mom never again picked up one of these particular magazines but switched to Good Housekeeping ...... which wasn't really any better about giving good advice to smart young women who wanted an education or job and not just a new last name.
