True. As someone who does a lot of working from home, the mother's idea about keeping herself groomed to keep up her morale resonates with me. During lockdown I often didn't shower or brush my teenth before starting my workday. But in the long run, I feel more "professional" somehow when I do a normal morning routine as if I were going to the office.

People mention how young men and women were very attractive back then. Others contradict that this is attraction bias: attractive people are more likely to have their photographs distributed to the public. But I largely disagree. Walking through my college's law school and other academic departments, men and women dressed up and were well-groomed in appearance. Obesity was barely a thing, and everyone looked more mature. Then everything started goimg downhill around 1978 (hippie era), 1980's (more extreme of the hippie era, but everyone had that dahmer look), but calming back down in the 1990's and 2000's. Still evident in 2010's and 2020's but the clean looks are largely making it back

It's kind of interesting how styles for men and women have changed over the years. If a woman went out looking like Sue in 2015 she would look like a grandma, but a guy could look like Don in 2015 and still be considered good looking.
@hannahfox54229 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, I think Don's suit would look ridiculous on a boy his age (heck even in the video it looks like he stole it off a corpse) but Sue's dress is beautiful. Admittedly her hair is a little old fashioned but I prefer up dos anyway.

I liked the girls outfit. if she had straight hair and wore flats or high heels it would be acceptable today for work or if one was a teacher.

I dress the way Sue does quite a lot. A large portion of my closet is either vintage, thrifted or inspired by it. I don't think it makes me look old, just old fashioned. Definitely doesn't blend in with the crowd though.

For real, as tempting as it is to throw on sweats and grab Starbucks every morning, it totally wrecks my mood. That extra 30 minutes of getting dressed, making coffee, and doing my hair and makeup makes me feel so much more energized and capable throughout the day. Plus, personally I'm at a point in my life where I'm applying to doctoral programs and spend a lot of time with professors who may be my letter of recommendation writers. I feel like I'm respecting their time and efforts more if I'm dressed as nicely as they are. That being said, I also have a lot of tattoos and piercings and unnaturally dyed hair. So I feel like it's extra important for me to be well groomed and very polite, since so many people think I'm a devil worshipper or something before getting to know me.

These videos are incredibly inspiring. I pared down my wardrobe and decided to buy mostly timeless looking pieces (some are true vintage too). What I notice is that the reason a lot of the older finds stand the test of time is not just the simplicity and elegance of the design (40s/50s were modest times) but also the colour choices, materials and make. I find a lot of items are natural or sturdy man-made fibres and almost everything is lined. Often all I need to do is take them to a seamstress to tailor them and fix any minor flaws and it really elevates the look.

Captain Mercurian wanna hear a joke? Two guys and a girl are stranded on a desert island. After a week or more, nature just kicked in, and you know stuff happened among the girl and the two men. But after a short amount of time the girl just felt worthless and ashamed of what she was doing that she killed herself. After a month or so, the to guys were kind of looking at each other for answers. And you know nature just kicked in, and stuff happened. But after a short amount of time the two men realised the immorality of their actions, and decided to let the corpse rest in peace

Same here. No permanent press, virtually everything needed to be pressed. No blow dryers, curling irons, microwaves. If you didn't wash and set your hair the night before you were out of luck. Not a lot of time spent on makeup, none of my friends wore it. No pants on girls for school, knee length skirts or dresses only except for gym class. No tattoos, piercings, pink or purple hair, very few pierced ears even. Girls wore flats, white tennis shoes, saddle shoes with white socks, or sandals in summer. No open campus in high school. Whole different world now. I'm glad I grew up then.

"For your success depends a great deal on how you look." This is very true. We all know it, but back then they acknowledged it, and used it to their advantage. It is not about genetic beauty; it is how to make the most of what you have. To look your best. To have good style, and carry yourself in the right way. To take care of yourself, and be put together. This is respect for others and yourself, and it opens more doors for you, than if you did nothing. This is really very valuable advice, if you use it right.

@Henry Jones Jr. wish that was true! My grandparents were strict on grooming and appearance.. When my brother and I stayed with them.. Sunday morning before church.. we’d get out bed our hair disheveled sticking up like roosters ..my grandmother waiting for us at the kitchen sink .. towels a beauty shop plastic cape and shampoo hose sprayer.. she would shampoo our hair until our scalps were red and hair squeaky clean and after she dried our hair we put on our suits and grandfather would smear his vitals all over our hair and comb it perfect ...only to have our grandmother shampoo us again before bed because she didn’t want the grease on her pillows! If you could endure a hair washing by my grandmother you can endure anything ... once when we were young boys around 12 or 13 she took us to her beauty shop , we were totally bored sitting there with all the old ladies pinching our cheeks while she was under the dryer ... so she had one of the old lady helpers in the beauty shop shampoo our hair .. that was a bit embarrassing but again that was her obsession with grooming and cleanliness. Such memories

I wish we could go back to the days when good quality clothing was relatively affordable, easily available, could be repaired and could stand a lot of washing. I don't just mean fashionable clothes but everyday things like jeans. I live in a town in Scotland which used to have a lot of textile mills. There was a shop which off loaded cut price clothes that the mills couldn't sell to chain stores because they had minor faults (like a button out of place). You could buy clothes there which lasted for years. That was in the nineties. Sadly the mills are all gone now
@elliegreen4738 Жыл бұрын
@evelynwilson I agree with you. I'm always thinking those thoughts too because the shops here in Ireland have had mostly clothes in poor quality fabric for the past few years. Many smaller clothes shops have closed down since convid. Glad I found a summer dress in good quality cotton in an M&S sale last October and I was lucky to find a few denim skirts there early this summer. Apart ftom that it's been difficult to get clothes in durable, comfortable and natural material anywhere in a design that's flattering and modest with a neckline that's not too near the throat. I remember the days when every town and city had clothes shops filled with nice clothes made from good quality material with lots of cotton, linen, wool, tweed, leather, fur and others, now it's mostly nylon made from recycled plastic and other horrible fibres that feel uncomfortable to the touch. Every shopper I see approaches the garments and immediately feels them nowadays and often walks past because most people long for the natural materials of the past. Some of the clothes look lovely until you feel them and even if they feel okay and are cotton, it's usually a poor quality, semi transparent cotton that isn't going to last long. Damm the selfish rich Elites behind the UN and their Agenda 21 Plan for Sustainable Development, they'll still be eating meat,wearing leather shoes, wearing natural fabrics while flying in their private jets, while we get crammed in to cities and culled so that they can restore the land to nature.
