100% agreed. I see some of the talentless, dull, cynical people making it big in media and think how cool it would be to throw some of those resources to really passionate, knowledgeable people who genuinely love their work, like GBF, Dylan Hollis, ZeFrank, Simone Giertz, Thomas Sanders, and Captain Disillusion. I would love to see what any one of them could do with just a million bucks, small change by Hollywood standards.

When my family and I went to see Doctor Strange two, we went to the Alamo Drafthouse. At the Drafthouse you are allowed to order food and beer and things to drink while you watch the movie. They also show a bunch of clips before the movie starts, that usually relate in some manner to Doctor Strange or whatever movies playing that day. Lo and behold, there was Dr. Mordred on the big screen! I may have been the only one in the audience that recognized this film and Jeffrey Combs, but it sure gave me a kick.

Seconding this. I know your usual format is either the standard tongue-in-cheek "good bad film" review or the more in-depth "exploring", but I would love to see you turn your skills and knowledge to videos about specific people, studios, or filmmaking technologies. Some suggestions: how New Line went from Freddy to Gandalf, the complete history of Full Moon and Charles Band, the rise and fall of stop motion animation in live action films (featuring a big chunk of Clash of the Titans, the generally-agreed "last gasp" of Harryhausen and old-school stop motion), the career of Jeffrey Combs, etc. I'm sure you're very comfortable in your existing niche (and you do it very well) but you might really enjoy stretching out a little.

I gotta give credit to the entire crew for being creative in their various effects. Back then, they didn't have the tech effects like we have now but they really made theirs very well.
@jamesdominguez76852 жыл бұрын
Well, they did, but they were insanely expensive and hardly anyone could do them. The Abyss and Terminator 2 literally had software engineers on the crew, writing new software to do whatever needed doing. It would be another decade or so before you could make decent CGI and digital composites on consumer-grade hardware with off-the-shelf software. The funny thing is that the rise of digital intermediaries reduced demand for chemical photo processes, making them cheaper and easier for small studios like Full Moon to afford. That's why the little indies kept doing travelling mattes and stop motion for years and years after the big studios moved on. I'd love Good Bad Flicks to do a video about that transition period between chemical and digital effects processing.

The plot of the sequel is taken directly from the Doctor Strange story in STRANGE TALES #119 (Beyond The Purple Veil). In it, two crooks break into Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum and attempt to steal a purple crystal,only to get sucked into it, getting pulled into the Purple Dimension. Strange has to enter it in order to save the men, and has to battle the warlord Aggamon. Strange wins, and saves the crooks. This is where the two stories deviate, because in the comic, Strange lets them go and they turn themselves in to the police.

I checked this out only a few months ago and it definitely made an impression. I did notice it had more of a prodoction quality and when I read about it afterwards I also heard the rumour that it was originally intended to be a Dr Strange film. Glad you cleared that up Cecil. But this movie had everything I love. Practical effect and stop motion (and especially no CGI), plus Jeffery Combs and Brian Thompson. It was also fun and adventurous. Something todays superhero movies tend to trade in for either dark, deep and serious or goofy, and humerous. In otherwords, they try to be Batman or Deadpool. Dr Mordred had the perfect measure that made it work. And you also dug up some childhood favourites. Cellar Dwellar and the Werewolf series. That was awesome and still holds up today.

If you're a reader, pick up Mike Carey's Felix Castor series. He was one of the best writers who worked on the Constantine comics back in the day, and Felix Castor is his own original creation. It's SO good. The first one is The Devil You Know.

I think the biggest hurdle for this movie was time. Five years earlier it may have done well. But 1992 is the year after T2 and Michael Jackson's Black or White video. It was the year before Jurassic Park. The film world was moving away from miniatures and into CGI. The era for this kind of movie was ending.

I feel so torn about old-school effects. I adore Harryhausen - Argonauts, Golden Voyage, and Gwangi are some of my all-time favourite films - but I also recognise how dated the effects became by the 80s. The trouble is that underpaid, overworked digital artists generally lack the artistry and depth of anatomy knowledge that Ray had, and/or the time to really explore them. I would love to see someone of Harryhausen's talents make traditional stop motion with digital assistance to smooth the framerate, match lighting and film grain, and make clean composites. There must be a middle ground somewhere...

But I watched the MST3K riffing of Dr. Mordrid and found the movie actually a bit too good for their talents. I was wondering why you were doing a video on Dr. Morbid again, but I guess you wanted to clarify that it wasn't supposed to be a Doctor Strange movie, and a few other details you left on the original video, BTW please don't delete the original Doctor Morbid video, I don't know why but I kind of prefer that one.

Honestly Doctor Mordrid seems like a better Doctor Strange adaptation than the MCU Movies
