9:04 That lich scene was possibly the best piece of writing in that movie; a lich enjoying the look on Damodars face is the attitude of an immortal evil doer that expended almost no energy getting not one but TWO other competing immortal evil doers, one an almost god, completely and utterly wrecked 👑.
@plasticflower5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I liked that line too, and I think it was the only one I remembered word by word from when I saw the movie ten years ago. The movie does a good job at displaying how powerful the lich is, to the point where the protagonists are kinda beneath him. iirc he doesn't get defeated and actually just leaves, like "meh, whatever" because he's above it all and doesn't need to get riled up about things. I'm glad the video creator doesn't riff on the movie, because even though there's ample opportunity to do so, I think at it's heart the movie is an honest attempt into faithfully adapting D&D into a movie.
@TheWeebinar4 жыл бұрын
Having only seen this review and not the movie, I could be missing something but.... Aren't Liches generally understood to be solitary creatures who rarely, if ever, interact with anything else outside of absorbing souls to sustain themselves? In the 5e Monster Manual's entry it says pretty plainly that the only reason they ever interact with other beings is either when their affairs are interfered with or when some sort of event is happening that reminds them of their life. Certainly we see why Damodar would have interacted with the others since he removed the curse that made him a Lich, which again doesn't seem to line up with how Liches usually work as they are made through the rituals that involve bargaining with evil gods that place their souls in a phylactery followed by drinking a potion of transformation. Granted, it wouldn't be too hard to find a few reasons why killing all of these people and awakening a colossal Darcolich might fit in with a Lich's affairs but does the movie ever explain why the Lich does what it does beyond just wanting to see the look on Damodar's face? Is Damodar just cramping this Lich's style? or is the Lich actually Profion and he just can't resist messing with Damodar because that's what he did in life?

Also the Thief is great, since he constantly warns them of problems, is usually ignored, and then just watches it all go wrong. The budget is a problem, but I'll take this over so many other fantasy movies. My gaming group sat down to watch this when it premiered on SciFi back in 2005, prepared to laugh and make fun of it the way we did the first. But once we realized holy shit, they were actually TRYING to make a good film this time around, we all got into it. It's not a good movie, by any stretch of the imagination, but I love it anyway: all the little nods to the pen and paper game, the old modules, and the way the party members tend to bicker among themselves the way basically every long-running gamer group does. My stomach kinda did that flip-flop thing when Ormaline loses her arm too. Even though you don't see it, just the scream she lets out when it's fused into the wall after the teleport is...*shudder*. It's never a good thing in a campaign when you have to ask another party member to perform an amputation. Thank you for this awesome review. Any chance we'll see you talk about the third?

Well, "good" is rather subjective. I think "Wrath of the Dragon God" is the best of the three, but "Book of Vile Darkness" is still better than the first. BoVD also takes a chance on a different plot idea than your normal swords and sorcery picture: all the main characters are clearly, unambiguously on the 'Evil' axis of the alignment scale. We all knew somebody back in the day who always wanted to play an assassin or an anti-paladin, so it's D&D through their eyes. Not a pretty sight, but one worth exploring anyway, even if Gary Gygax himself didn't care for evil-aligned PCs. :)

Nah, even D&D books are unbearable fan faction level works and those are the better authors. Part of the problem is the game itself like nearly all games went from something hardcore to something far more forgiving and simplistic. Plus even back in the day the path which allows for player progression doesn't translate to story telling. Lastly it's just easier not to deal with a bloated greedy franchise that would certainly want some things done their way. There is a reason why no game movies have ever been successful and it has nothing to do with budget, the brand interferes with the writing too much. They could get away with a modern litRPG story where the cast knows they are inside of a game world and break the 4th wall a lot, but I doubt something serous would ever work.

@@jacobnorris8256 D&D is just as, if not more popular in Japan as it is in the US. There are light novels there written about the campaigns they played, which were turned in to anime series, Record of Lodoss War, Log Horizon, and Overlord being a few examples. Also D&D has been getting more and more popular in the last few years thanks to things like Critical Role. Which pulls 2mil+ views on their uploaded sessions. The numbers in the link you put also seem kind of odd, since the numbers for Roll20 are relatively low given that Roll20 stated that as of last year they have 3,000,000+ users. It also doesn't list Fantasy Grounds which is another big VTT and has a few hundred thousand people playing D&D on that alone. But the quote was also regarding fans of D&D, not just players. "It was a colossal draco-lich." Fun fact for anyone paying attention: that wasn't just a draco-lich, that was Falazure, the "Night-Dragon", AKA the first draco-lich and major black sheep of the draconic pantheon. That's why the film was called "Wrath of the Dragon God". Falazure is the dragon god of Death and Undeath. He represents an end to life, even immortal life so referencing him at all is a huge taboo. It's a shame we didn't get anyone from the Bahamut side of things who knows the hidden dragon-lore in the movie. Like a cleric of Bahamut would have been great. They'd have been shitting themselves over the presence of that draco-lich. Typically, when evil dragons pop up, you call Bahamut's boys for help. In the lore, Falazure gets put to "sleep" (More like suspended animation) because noone can figure out how to kill him and Bahamut has enough problems dealing with his 'darling' sister to deal with a draconic deathcult... I guess it kinda makes sense that they went to Obad-Hai, since he represents nature and the natural cycle, while Falazure represents the death of all things and undeath. Still waiting for a real (IE one with an actual budget) D&D movie, though I'm glad they made this one more faithful... Thanks for looking at this one, G.B.F.!

I always saw the three D&D movies as the progression of a DM and his players learning the game. In the first movie, they just got the game and are still learning the rules. They make a ton of mistakes and the DM tries to throw in everything he finds in the books that he likes even if it doesn't make sense or is inappropriate for the party's level. In the second movie, the DM has calmed down some and the players know how to play their classes. However, the DM is more interested in telling 'his' story that that of the group, so most of the major discoveries and the ultimate victory end up going to his NPC wizard who stayed home through the adventure. In the third movie, the DM has figured out how to run a decent game, but the party has grown tired of playing the heroes (except for one of them) so everyone shows up with evil characters and the DM has to try and still run them through the campaign he wrote while they do horrible crap.

Damn it, feel free to call me soft, but I did actually care about these characters! Which is more than I can say of any of the heroes from the first movie. And speaking of Dungeons&Dragons the Rpg, the demise of the cleric in this movie was very reminiscent of how a friend of mine died while fighting a dragon. I liked this way better than the first, simply because it overall felt closer to the source material without trying too hard.
@davidgantenbein93625 жыл бұрын
JemyM It also lacked the abundance of annoying characters from the first one ... and this one didn’t abuse a Beholder as a cheap watch dog.

Maybe Profion put a second curse on Damodar without him knowing it. When Damodar died after being thrown from Profion's Tower he returned from the dead as a lich.
@barret-xiii6 жыл бұрын
I feel like this was one of those things that was created as more of a backstory element that was never shown in the original. After watching the sequel, remembering when Profion "cures" Damodar, I assumed he just removed the brain parasite, and the undead curse was implemented long before the first film even began; Like he was made into a personal muscle that would be forced to serve him indefinitely until freed from the curse.

I really enjoyed wrath of the dragon god.. The 1st D&D movie was utter shite (barring Jeremy Irons but he always brings his a game) but this felt like a genuine d&d movie. Clerical and Wizard magic, barbarians, elves.. The script was a little weak at points and the cgi was dicey but I really liked it.

You nailed it. With double the budget, they really could have given it an extra layer of polish. It had a lot of heart.

You should do a review of the 1980 film: Hawk the Slayer. Awesomely bad with some good moments, and Jack Palance chewing the scenery like he hadn't eaten in weeks.

Watched the two D&D movies over a decade ago, and only recently (finally) got around to playing the game myself. It's loads of fun, and at the end of this video, you tell me WB might make a big budget film? I hope the two year gap has not squashed this idea, as I would love to see it.
@Liquidcadmus3 жыл бұрын
This looks WAY better than the first one, I didn't even know this existed. the fact that there appears to be no childish idiotic humor like in the first one, makes me interested in watching this one. I didn't mind the low budget of the original, but the cringe "humor" just made me angry, it was the same type of stuff as Jarjar binks in SW.

While I'm not a big D&D fan, I did love the animated show of Dungeons and Dragons. I wonder if they ever decided to make a movie based off that part of the franchise.

I rented it on DVD solely for the special audio track that had a commentary by the sample characters from the D&D Player's Handbook. Lidda and two others. Sounds cool, but wasn't actually worth it.

Yeah, I watched this move on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. I like it. Edit: Having a big budget was never a real problem for story telling. Remember that many "big budget" movies end up being really bad... like REALLY bad... cus then studios exert more pressure on the producers... and force certain changes... we've all seen it before a million times over. I prefer this moveis over a hundreds of big budget movies.

+azraelswrd Same here. This one actually felt like they gave a damn about the source material and tried to be faithful this time. Never have seen the third one but I hear it's even worse than the first one though.

dude there's a 2013 film called HOTEL INFERNO that you should check out if you haven't(wouldn't surprise me if you have though). it's gory, small budget but you can see the crew's devotion in its special effects...oh and it's in P.O.V.

@Avarn3889 жыл бұрын
This movie was really fun. While it had some glaring flaws, it was as you said more accurate and faithful to the source material. I think the reason why D&D never shined was simply due to the first movie. Jeremy Irons, great as he was, was way too over the top. And the last we say about Marlan Wayians the better. Finally, it also doesn't help that Lord of the Rings came out a year later. Thus, the mythical, fantasy aspect of D&D ironically had a spiritual successor within the movie. And while most diehard fantasy buffs and fans of D&D know the differences between it and Lord of the Rings,most of the mainstream audiences don't know. So lack of interest combined with studio apprehension to not have a failure culminates into what we have. But still, I'm happy we're getting another attempt. Now, if only they can make a Thundercats live action movie. If they can make Transformers, TMNT, they can at least take this 80s series and turn into something. Just don't be like Transformers. Be like Lord of the Rings. But I digress. Great video as always.
