I first saw this film when I was 11 yrs old. I've always been a horror junkie and this film and it's sequel are easily some of the greatest of all time. The late 70s and all through the 80s were the golden years of horror. Practical effects, actual plots, and frightening story lines. Unbeatable.

I am pretty sure Cinemassacre will eventually cover this film. As James Rolfe said, there are still many horror films that they have not covered but will. Calling them mainstream or delving into mainstream things mostly is a huge misconception and their focus is classic horror, much superior to modern horror. There is more to love about Cinemassacre aside from AVGN too. Board James, Monster Madness, James and Mike Monday’s, and while I am not a huge fan of the rental reviews at all, they are still fun to watch.

V. V. Emil I never said they were mainstream. Those films are far from mainstream, but Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness tends to cover mainstream horror as well as lesser known horror, and with the latter, they are phenomenal at that.

I'm gonna say it here: LOVE your reviews, man. But this one struck a really particular string in me. The Phantasm movies, especially the first two, have always seemed to me so... Bradbury-ish. I mean, the atmosphere, the face of the evil, and the idea of overcoming one's fears... And you put my puzzle together because I didn't know that Coscarelli was initially planning to film "Something Wicked"! It was soooo rewarding. Thank you for your thoughts and appreciation for this masterpiece.

Seeing the sequel last night, I couldn't help but think that this franchise was probably a big influence on Eric Kripke when he created SUPERNATURAL. The Winchester Brothers. The car. Traveling from town to town battling otherworldly evil. The gun collection. Honestly, a SUPERNATURAL/PHANTASM crossover would be totally natural.

This film's theme has haunted the dark corners of my mind since I saw it in the early '80s. The tune is a little reminiscent of Tubular Bells from The Exorcist -- some of the best spine-tingling music to ever score a horror film (alongside John Carpenter's Halloween, The Fog, and The Thing). Thanks for the vid! As an aside, have you considered doing an "Exploring..."-style commentary/review of film scores? Nevermind the sequel's explanation: if you look at the film as a standalone, the whole thing is a Jacob's Ladder scenario where the main character tries to overcome a major trauma and move on with his life through his dreams. Except in this case, he fails and is consumed by his fear and grief.

I believe Malcom Seagrave did most of the composition while Fred Myrow was being hospitalized. I forget what was wrong with Fred but Malcom would go and visit him for instruction since it was Malcom's first ever involvement with a movie sound track. I was Malcom's roommate right after he returned from the L.A. recording. Then the movie came out and played in Monterey and we went together...got a buzz on...then watched. Malcom was ecstatic! He whispered to me that the film speed was off a bit so the music was not in perfect pitch. I asked if it bothered him..."Not this time." he said (GREAT FRIEND, now missed)

I remembered this movie only by few (although very intense) images burnt into my mind, so I took the time and watched all the series back-to-back. There was still quite a lot I didn't fully understand, but that's fine, as in my opinion movies should not explain everything and leave in some moments (mere mortal) should not comprehend. Also what I liked about whole series was its escalation, with a visions of doomed earth in the last. Second was best, third was the weakest and fourth tied things together nicely. At least according to the imdb there's a fifth movie in the works, Phantasm: Ravager, claiming to be the "last installment". Thank gods its not a remake. And thanks for sharing this movie, it needs to be remembered.
