I advise anyone coming to Scotland between May and September to bring a midge net and plenty of Smidge . And that's not guaranteed to keep them at bay 🙈

Great video showing how a little tiny insect can ruin your camp ...for anyone coming to camp in Scotland in the summer please take this advice and buy a fine mesh midge net , smidge will help too and even these new thermacell devices are apparently good and only £30 ...treating your gear and tent with permetherin helps with midges and tics...flextail are making a tiny repel device worth trying...good luck 😅

Me dad was from Glasgow and when as kids my Dad and mum took us to Scotland for summer camping holidays Dad always referred to the midges as "wee beasties" tbf the torment that comes with em.. Wee beasties is a pretty accurate description. Still missing Dad😔. He was a great man. Ftt.😠

Been there, done that! Spent a very uncomfortable night there back in the early 70's then 3 nights higher up near the ridge which was midge freeeeeee!!!!! Had to laugh though and started scratching too. Oil of citronella was the only thing that kept them away. You can get it at a chemist shop. Hilleberg tent mesh is way to large for Scottish midges only for the Scandinavian mosquitos which are huge with antlers that get tangled! ha ha

I feel your pain! I spent 2 weeks wild camping in the Highlands last month and hiked to the Lost Valley. Midge bites may not last as long as mosquito bites nor itch as much but that prickly sting as they bite is horrible. Not sure I'd go there in winter though as that walk would be treacherous in wet weather. I had enough fun on the way back down because I didn't quite fit through the gap in the rocks and I'm very short and found it difficult to reach footholds on the steep rocky bit near the top. Is a fun little hike though with a rewarding view - but need to go when there's a stiff breeze to keep those midges away.

Idyllic spot by the river I thought 😂When the black swarms started we escaped into the tent only to find them coming up through the floor which was so old it had disintegrating and we couldn’t even get out of our sleeping bags to cook 😆 next night we walked back and slept in the car… luxury

I know your pain .Had exactly that experience at that spot by the river at Derry Lodge. Near the footbridge? Had come over Ben MacDui from ski centre , doing a circuit through the Lairig Gruh back to Aviemore . Aye , its a beautiful place- but we got absolutely rinsed by the wee ba******s. Had the proper midge head nets, gloves ,hats with brims, plastered in Smidge etc . I know the score as I'm from a bit north of there but when they're full on there's nowt to do but get in the tent. I cooked outside though, while running in circles! One of the worst midge experiences I've had and I've been camping in the Highlands trying to swerve the beasties since I was a wee boy. The inside of the fly sheet was black in places with squashed midges and some blood I think. Still stained 2 years later..(Although there is actually a bothy near by if we'd thought about it. )Ran off down Lairig Gruh the next day and didn't stop for breakfast until we got some height.

@@KMilton-iw2tk They must be a super strength evolved beastie at that place from feasting on the blood of tough hikers for centuries! I wonder if they were a factor in how fell running started 🤔😆 I was so amazed when I was on the lairig Gruh middle of May this year and we didn’t see a single midge!
