I would love to see how you make Tabasco sauce, Sara! I have enjoyed collecting the seeds from my favorite zinnias all throughout the season. I collected so many that I started snipping off the cut blooms and just let them fall. They are sprouting like crazy and are even beginning to bloom again. I ordered some Southern Speckled Butter Beans this year and planted them for the purpose of increasing the number of seeds available for me to plant next year. I went from one small packet to all I could ever need in one season. The greenhouse is looking great! I appreciate the update on what all y’all started in it. I’m sure many others do as well.

I started saving heirloom seeds back in 2008 and its a true miracle that one or 2 seeds will give enough for a garden next year! I started on my seed journey and heirloom journey all because I couldn't find a decent tasting tomato like I remembered from my childhood. My aunty gave me some seeds and boom there was that flavor(just plain old beefsteaks) well its kind of an obsession now lol.

Hi Kevin and Sarah! It was a terrible year for the garden up here in NW MN. We are in a draught which started last fall. The snow fall wasn't enough to even do any plowing with the tractor. Even with daily watering, the garden failed, except for Tomatoes. I've been canned tomato sauce and dilling green tomatoes fill the pantry in the basement. My last batch of dilled green tomatoes are on the stove now. My new asparagus plants did survive, which is good. My taters...well none. I normally grow way too many potatoes, of which the extras go to food shelter programs or to those needing some help. My bees did a good job collecting nectar despite the lack of rain. Well, that about it here. -Bill

I would love to see a Tabasco sauce making video, how fun! We purchased our Texas homestead in July, and it was being leased by another farmer for hay. Now that he has all of his hay (two separate crops), and our home there is getting finished (hopefully move in by mid November). Soooooo…we have been planning, seed buying/saving, and reading. We have contacted some local farms for some hands on learning (a dairy and chicken farm; I have a pig farm on my radar I plan to contact also), which is exciting. There is one section of fencing that needs to be finished, and a gate that has to be moved. Plenty to do always, which is very encouraging! We have been planning this for approximately 15 years - we are thrilled! Thank you for all of your ideas, encouragement, and how to videos.

Love your shirt Sarah!! So appropriate. We don’t have a homestead and we live in a big city but have a big yard. I am growing outside (south Texas) cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, kale, chard and bok choy all in tubs on my deck. I have lettuce growing in my Kratky jars inside under lights because it is too hot here yet. I bought a pressure canner this week and will start canning meat. I helped as a kid growing up but have not done it myself. I am familiar with pressure cookers and water bath canning. At heart I am a homesteader and look forward to your videos. We have had goats in the past and considered chickens but we are now 71 and buying an RV to travel so we don’t want to be tied down.

Sarah, those outside petals on the zinnias have seeds attached. Don’t throw them away! The flowers are beautiful!!! These are the same ones I planted this year. Here in northern WI finishing up the last of tomatoes, peppers and waiting on some beans to dry down. We still haven't had a frost which is amazing, but garden was planted late due to the weather and a destination wedding. I've changed the variety of tomatoes I grow due to your recommendations and they did wonderful. I've been gardening for 50 years and have still learned so much from your channel. Thanks so much for your hard work and taking the time to make videos to help educate. I've had a family milk cow in the past, have the chickens, ducks and a limousine based beef herd with all of them related to my sons old (13 yrs) limousine show cow. Again thanks. God Bless

So jealous! I have had the worst 2 years of harvests in all my years of gardening! Not only dealing with limited sunlight and terrible soil, but now it’s squirrels and chipmunks completely destroying everything in my greenhouse. It’s a frame greenhouse with a plastic cover. No way to keep them out. I don’t want to use poison or kill traps. Do you have kritters in your greenhouse? How do you deal with them?

@@carriejones9890 A good idea for your pest problem is to put up a couple of owl boxes on your property. The owls will keep your pests down to a manageable number and are better than having cats to eliminate the problem because 🦉 won't use your greenhouse as a catbox😳

@@carriejones9890 We have cats that don't use the garden as a litter box due to the ground cover, they don't get into the raised beds either for some reason. And two blue heeler crosses that will hunt any little critter, and a hound that hunts the big ones. Don't have a green house yet, in the plans now that I'm retired. I don't ever use poison as I don't know where the poisoned bodies will end up, I also have chickens and ducks. Our cats stay by the machine shed, dogs won't allow them by the house. Hang in there, sometimes its a slow process to get the soil amended. I'm fortunate to have a beef herd so I can use manure if needed, and compost chicken manure for a year.

First year growing zinnias. I planted then by my blackberries. We will have a place for them every year. I'm in Wisconsin and the birds have been getting the tops before I am able to harvest seed. It was lovely to see them by your garden. I know mine put a smile on my face every day🥰

Here in South East Finland we are planting garlic. The cloves should be planted before the frost so they get a good head start in the spring. Parsnip you can plant in october as well to be able to harvest them in late semptember following year. This year my parsnips got really big.

I'm just about to plant garlic here in the US (state of Michigan) and I didn't get parsnips planted this year but they are on my wish list for next year. My aunt taught me to put a few bales of straw over them and in winter we can dig them for meals and after that first cold snap they become so sweet and tasty. Sauted in butter is a favorite way to eat them but also a nice cream of parsnips soup with warm crusty bread and butter during a snow storm is another.

I just turned 73 last week and feel like I have so much more to give yet. My husband and I lived on our first homestead together for over 50 years. Long story...LOL! Saved snow squarestem seeds for pollinators yesterday, started basil cuttings in small pots to winter over, saved seeds from my herbs for planting this spring. Guess what? Chicken squat, that's what. Every time I was excited about something and went to my mom and said guess what - she gave me that comback. Fun memory. Thanks. Moving my strawberies and runners to another bed and refreshing soil in my green stalks. Busy, busy - and waiting for yummy greens. Pulled a late sweet potato from my compost and as I tugged a little potato came up with the vine and I had sauteed sliced potato and sweet potato leaves for lunch with my fermented (in honey) garlic cloves for lunch SOOOO good. Great video today and appreciate this end of the garden jobs, also.

Hey Kevin, now that you have a couple of greenhouses. Next year, plant a Tabasco plant in a bucket and move it in the greenhouse. We get them to do a couple of years, here in Florida. Some even longer. Peppers like that are "usually" perennial, so move those babies inside. 😄 They will dry up and look dead, but they are not. 😊

I've just decided that it's time for us to have a green house! I've actually been saving or a freeze dryer, but I think a green house is a better choice for us right now. I've been saving seeds for years and years, but honestly I hadn't thought about my zinnias, I will be saving those seeds this year as well. This was my first year at making hot sauce and it turned out great. I made a red using my red jalapenos and serrano peppers and a green hot sauce using all green jalapenos and serrano peppers. Be patient with your parsnips. They take sometimes more than 2 weeks to germinate. Keep them moist and maybe cut a circle board to put weight on them. We put a board on ours in the garden, peaking under until they sprout. Take the board off at night to give the tiny plant overnight to harden off by morning. A tip given to me from a market gardener.💙

Considering that I just made the same green tomato salsa verde that you made on your channel, I'm really interested in how you make your tobasco sauce. Although I don't have any tobasco peppers, I have a bunch of serrano and cayenne in the freezer and I'm done canning things that need them so they're destined to become hot sauce. As for what's happening on my homestead; this weekend I'll be planting garlic. The straw will be delivered next week and I'll be covering beds to prepare for winter. We've already had a couple evenings below 30° F here so it won't be long until it snows. (zone 4) I know that commenting is good for the algorithms so I've started adding comments to creators that have inspired me to make positive changes in my life. Thank You!

Whenever I saw your zinnias I remembered my mother’s folks gardens. They are from east Alabama and they do a vegetable garden every year. They always plant zinnias in the middle of the garden. They will plant vegetables. For a few rows then a row of zinnias.

Since you asked... s. Calif low desert zone 8 or 9. I have baby plants going of butterhead lettuce, Chinese cabbage, collards, parsley and cilantro, peas, and broccoli... A few fennel and dill. Minowase daikon are doing great and hope to harvest this month. So much more to plant! The Winters are usually so much easier to grow here. We got early rains twice now. Hoping it means the drought will let up . Thanking God for every drop of precious rain. Oh! Planting a hill of wildflowers and bulbs... Just because. Several families can see it and hoping to bring a little joy come Spring.

I love to see different ways of seed harvesting. I didn't have any garden this year, but I've been saving seeds from the heirloom & other unknown varieties (hoping they germinate) of produce I buy, in hopes of having a garden next year. You two are right, buying seeds is never guaranteed year to year, especially with severe weather impacting crops & harvests. For many sweet pepper plants, I cut off the top of the pepper around the stem and leave the seeds on, then put a folded paper towel in the bottom of a brown lunch bag, set it inside, fold the top over, let it dry out. I label the bag with a sharpie the year & type of plant, & then keep adding the same type to the bag, like sweet green peppers, etc. They always dry nice, no mold. I save white response envelopes from junk mail, cut them in half, fold the cut edge over twice, tape it down, and I make my own free seed envelopes! 😉 I've heard of people collecting flower seeds by wrapping organza jewelry bags around flower heads to collect seeds. Has anyone here tried it? Sounds like a neat idea.

Ty for sharing! Crazy times🤯 We sure don't like the way that our normal every day lives are being put on hold & the rising costs! So far I've saved zinnias, marigolds, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, bunching onions, musk melons, & I want to try to save broccoli & cabbage seeds, I'm too late on cauliflower but have seeds saved, & I also over winter some of our pepper plants for the first time. 😋 I may also try to figure out how to save other varieties of seeds from our other family gardeners, because we had such a hard time getting the seeds we wanted & we really don't want to go through that again, it puts everything behind, & makes for a much shorter growing season, especially our peppers😬 & right now, we all need the fullest potential of our garden plants! I pray our country turns around soon🙏 but in the mean time, save all you can, because we never know what's next, & we all may be in need of what other have🧐 tc🙏 💞☕

Yep, I start saving seeds eary and all the way through fall. Eary: cilantro, lettuce, peas, mustard etc. Later: tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash etc. I don't stop saving seeds till the snow flys and I love zennias too.

Hello from TN! We are winding down here. We have some new Filbert trees (Hazelnuts), Mulberry trees, a Fig, a new peach tree and a Pawpaw tree to help pollinate a wild tree in our yard to get planted! I also splurged and bought myself some climbing Roses! We are Going to add on to our main Chicken House. Thinking of putting our Ducks into a permanent house, and releasing them into the yard daily, instead of the Hoop houses, at least for the winter. Their Hoop houses are just SO messy. Unfortunately we built them a little bit too big to move daily! I couldn't possibly drag them! We have ample seeds! I even managed to get the two paste tomatoes that you like so well! I'm pretty happy about having those! They look large and perfect for making tomato sauces! Will be picking up Black Walnuts as soon as it stops raining long enough for me to do it! Tornado like winds did structural damage one county away from us! We were lucky. I still have 24 meat Chickens to process and I don't have a plucking machine! Just me, myself, and I ! :) Saving heirloom/heritage seeds is a MUST!!!! I tried to find Sugar Pie pumpkins last year and couldn't find plant or seed at all. Somehow I was blessed with one volunteer plant and I wasn't about to be in the same position again, so I've been saving as many seeds as I can. To many seeds, never. You can always give them to others and help them start a life of fresh fruits and veggies.

Here in So. Cal. I just pulled the summer garden. Saved Seed for many of my flowers and veggies. I have a tendency to miss stuff which get left for seed harvest, and you're right buy once save forever. I too have problems with Parsnips, read that you need fresh seed every year. Can’t believe it’s already time to take the garden down. Sara, I like to use dried okra pods in flower arrangements. And around Christmas, I spray paint them gold, add glitter and they can be used to arrangements, decorating the tree, wreaths…so many natural, organic decorations!

I'm still harvesting stuff from the garden and watching the peppers and cherry tomatoes ripen in the greenhouse. Today I saw a red pepper! I'm considering transplanting some of the celery from the outside garden into the greenhouse buckets once I've pulled the tomatoes and peppers and taken the heater back in the house. I'm going to plant the 4 Tom Thumb pea seeds I managed to find in a bucket in the greenhouse also, after the heat's gone. This week I harvested and dehydrated nasturtiums, calendula and bachelor's buttons, and harvested some borage for seeds. I'm anxiously waiting for my bean seeds to mature--I left a lot of them on the plants; hope they won't be wasted! Today I'm going to harvest my cabbages since they're starting to split, and will try a new-for-me canning recipe for "sauerkraut". Hubby loves sauerkraut just for the taste so this will be a good way to preserve cabbage, hopefully. I'm waiting as long as possible to harvest the carrots. I need to harvest the oregano, spearmint, thyme--timing is everything for those. And I need to decide when to harvest the four surprise turnips I found, lol. And, as always, I keep watch on the tomatoes--harvesting them as they ripen and canning recipes as I go. Sarah, I made your ketchup last week. It's great! May be my new ketchup go-to recipe. :)

Parsnips are more notorious for taking a LONG time to germinate. 4 weeks or more. This year it was 26 days for the first few and another week for the rest. The seedling's will look almost exactly like Cilantro seedlings, and very tiny. Give them a couple more weeks, and keep the soil surface consistently moist Oh, we planted end of May this year. So germination took place during a very warm June. You are right about being cold hardy plants. Many leave them in the ground past 1st frost, for sweeter flavor. Summer into fall to full maturity. 110 days to maturity plus germination time. So, 130-140 days, start to finish, but well worth it.😊 We grow Javelin pelleted seeds from Johnny's. Great success. Give them some more time. And keep them moist. Good Luck

The most viable Zinnia seeds are on the bottom layer. I bought that Okra variety. It's my first time growing Okra ever. Yes, would love to see a Tobasco sauce video, please, Sarah :)

plant more red flowers, they attract humming birds, tons of them, and monarch butterflies. I planted so many red zinnians and i had 5-7 butterflies at once and 2-3 humming birds. It was so amazing to see them . AND bumble bees . Oh Lord, my back yard was so beautiful this year.

I did the exact same thing with all my zinnia varieties, put them in a bowl and mixed them up. I planted them a lot thicker in a 93’ row next to the street. They have been such a fun, happy hedge of flowers and have blessed the whole neighborhood. So many people have commented how much they enjoyed them. I’ll go out and save some of mine as well and I hope they will bear true.
