***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Nothing like going through life with one litter of piglets after another swinging from your teats! Myrtle is a pro at it though and seems to thrive while being the best mom! Wow the quail are really growing too! Good job! I am so glad to see how the two of you treat your animals. Your rabbits have a good place to nest, unlike some of the other vlogs I’ve seen. The most real couple on KZbin! You talk about mistakes as well as your triumphs to help others. Thank you for sharing!

I have been container gardening for over three years.i I have back and leg problems, but I love love love to garden 🤗 I have learned a couple things. When I'm preparing the soil in container I amend with, and don't be shy it won't hurt your plants, bone meal blood meal and Jobes organic fertilizer. On top I use a mix of organic peat moss and the potting soil. After two weeks and about every three weeks after I put bone meal, blood meal and Jobes again. I try to get mostly on the soil, but I rinse them and fertilizer goes into the soil. I planted small plants and one month later I'm starting to harvest some beautiful romaine lettuce and collards for salad. I wish I could send you pictures the plants are really huge. I water almost every day because this time of year I don't need to water as often. But sometimes I water just to have fresh water go down to keep container from souring. Really try it you will be amazed. On existing containers I put a good coat of those fertilizers around the plants. Never had a plant be burned from doing this 😊😊😊

Thank you for reminding all of us that it takes perseverance to try something new. When channels only show the good then that’s what people expect when they try. It is refreshing to see that even our favorite channels make mistakes. From your example of making such mistakes and by not admitting defeat, but instead making changes and sharing them we all learn together. Thank you Kevin and Sara for all you share. I’m really looking forward to more rabbit videos. I have learned so much already because of watching your past videos. I cannot wait to learn more.

I agree. I have a SIL that is wanting to get into hobby farming and her idea of what that looks like is rainbows and lollipops. I've tried explaining to her the constant work and joy it can bring but it will look nothing like some manicured, magazine spread kind of thing. You're going to be tired. Chickens have lots of predators. Sometimes you'll have no idea why is went wrong and you just have to start over. I guess experience is the best teacher.

Hey Shelley, I think this is a cautionary tale about losing focus when you have way too many irons in the fire at one time. Between a new farm the ducks, rabbits, quail, turkeys and piglets; not to mention a daughter heading off to college the last thing they needed was another garden. Losing focus can lead to all sorts of trouble, some worse than others..even deadly. I’ve been a subscriber for several years, which makes what happened all the more strange. Kevin & Sara have raised veggies in hi-tunnels and containers for years. It doesn’t make sense why they’d use a different soil? They made a video last spring about filling the large raised bed and containers in the other hi-tunnel they built. They used a local product and had terrific results. Hi-tunnels and gardening isn’t new to them and I certainly don’t believe Kevin or Sara got “cocky” as Kevin suggested. I’m glad they showed what can happen if you don’t “mind the store”. They’ll turn things around in no time and have all kinds of veggies. Homesteading isn’t as easy as many believe it to be..this is a perfect example of what can happen. Take Care and Stay Well !

Bagged soil is pretty inert and just because it’s organic doesn’t mean it’s fertile. I add a lot of peat moss or coconut coir, perlite, blood meal for nitrogen and bone meal for phosphorus, an organic vegetable fertilizer, a little epsome salt for magnesium, and just a pinch of borax. This basic soil mix will be nice and fluffy, won’t compact after watering, and it will hold just enough moisture so your plants won’t dry out in a couple days. You may want to add more nitrogen or phosphorus to the soil depending on what you’re growing. For instance, if you want nice leafy greens like spinach you’ll add nitrogen. If you want carrots you’ll add phosphorus.

I believe I purchased the exact same soil! I have used it successfully for years. However, this year the soil was NOT good! Everything I planted in the soil this season stayed almost exactly the same size as when I put the plant starts in the raised bed. I’ll have to determine if I will continue with the same soil. The beds that I filled with the 2021 season soil did not produce ANY fruits or veggies!!

Thanks to all of those making comments we can learn from as well; even the negative ones at times, we can learn from. Thinking of a recent sharing by another great honest gardener and farmer. A woman shared a harsh negative remark about this 'you tube' teacher thinking she had so much to offer since it was clear she had killed all the trees on her property. --It was winter time and all her trees were deciduous trees. I had to laugh at her mistake and not being familiar with deciduous trees dropping their leaves seasonally. I remember the first time I saw tamarack trees over in eastern Washington and thought the entire evergreen forest was dying as all the Tamarack trees were going into winter and turning yellow! I am glad that learning can be a lifetime project, if we are willing. Thanks to all!

Mistakes are where discoveries live! Just LOOK at how much you discovered, jumping in on the scale you chose?!?! It's AWESOME! It could have taken YEARS to discover all that you've discovered in a single season because, think about it. Even as diverse as your crop is, it's still just a single growing season so even one who has gardened for 80 years has only harvested 80 growing seasons! You are basically living an exploration of homesteading and, in exploration, failure isn't failure - it's discovery! You're explorers and there is NO better life than one of the exploration of one's interests! That's why I watch you! I have NO interest in homesteading but I'm an explorer, myself, and getting older and SOO enjoying reports from younger explorers' explorations of things they love! You're doing fantastic!! And with regard to soil and compost - compost that is "done" is also dead. Soil is a living thing and when compost is done, the life - the worms and microbes (probiotics) that make it so awesome - move on to greener pastures. Worm castings aren't the life in compost. The life is the living that produces it. Try it. Fill a bucket with twigs, leaves, kitchen scraps and garden waste, cover with a couple inches of the dead soil you emptied out of the bucket, water it, set it on the ground for a couple of weeks to collect wormsand plant something in it. See what happens when you plant something living in a LIVING environment. Life thrives in the company of other life. Whether it's worms, quail, cabbage or old ladies. Growing food and sustainable soil in containers is my current exploration and will probably see me through to the end of my life, there are so many things I want to try!

All organic soils have to be amended is my experience. Organic is so vague as to the amounts of nutrition in it. We have learned to add lime and phosphorus. Then magnesium is a big deal in high tunnels. It's a learning experience you will figure it out for your area. We are still learning and are having great results in ours.Sugar snap peas pull nitrogen from the soil till they get a certain size then from the air as they get bigger.

We learned the hard way when we filled out raised beds with the Kellogg brand soil this past spring. Weeds started almost immediately and just got wild and uncontrollable. I'm removing the raised beds from where they are now and putting all that Kellogg soil in holes in our driveway at least it'll be useful in that way. It's a life lesson. I've learned a very valuable one. I've decided to source my organic soil a little better this time. From here on I'll build ans grow my own soil like you do there @Deep South Homestead.

Container gardening is tricky. One thing that's often overlooked both in container and ground crops is soil temperature. A frost date only relates to air temp. If your soil is too warm in those containers, no matter the air temp, your cold weather veggies will suffer. And vice versa in the spring. My local Ag agency suggust measuring the temp 6 in down in the dirt. They also suggested that the crazy weather of the last few years is making frostdates less reliable compared to soil temp. You guys are doing a wonderful job, love watching you grow.

Welcome to the wonderful world of greenhouse growing! We’ve been experimenting for going on 7 years on growing plants in our greenhouse. We also were pretty cocky and thought it would be simple, but, no, it is not. We have a greenhouse with two fans and an evaporative cooler all across the back wall. We also have two sun screen cloths over the top of the greenhouse. Texas is just brutal. We use the gutter system with buckets and a hydroponic cup in the bottom to sit and wick water up from the troughs. That works well, and is easier than watering. We have a bed for herbs in there using the Mittleider system and the rosemary stays year round. The rest of the pots we now plant leafy veggies and they grow like wildfire all year. We have a propane heater for the few freezes we get, or outages we get, and it works well. I store our outside plants in there in the winter. Also our cement mixer lives in there , to mix soil, when we need it. Look at MHPGardener, hydroponics/greenhouse for the most successful greenhouse growing I’ve seen. We do not open the sides of our greenhouse, which would have been nice to do, so this year we will go down to our big garden and grow everything else there, except for the greens. The little pigs and bunnies are precious. Thanks for showing us.

Hey y'all, this was a good episode for several reasons of course the quail and baby pigs are always so much fun. The best part of the video was the greenhouse portion. You know it takes some real courage and vulnerability to admit and display the mistakes and simple recipe for soil composition, fertilizer and water schedule. This really opens yourself to a lot of know it all comments and even possible unkindness. I really liked how you talked out the changes by using critical thinking to determine a better course of action. I have learned that the manufacture directions really only apply to one set of climates and growing zones and we as the user must adopt them to work where we are. Rather than try to blame this manufacturer or these people that said try this ect. you just got busy getting busy and figured it out. Y'all have over 600K viewers for a reason and I believe it is the willingness to sacrifice pride to further the learning and lesson taught to the viewer as well as to yourself. Y'all are one of my favorite channels and I am so glad you do what you do here because it does matter to do it the right way every time. God bless y'all take care by for now

Thank you for showing all the babies. Also, as far as the gardening. Never give up. This may be corny and old, but still true. If at first you don't succeed, try try again. God bless.

Hey There Kiddos. This was my first year I had tried bucket gardening. Listening to your video-we had much the same problems. I was in 5 gallon buckets. I went to recycle center and got all my buckets for free (food container buckets). In spring I had gathered up some plastic coffee containers-on frost nights I covered plants with them. They came from recycle center-they were free also. My lettuce and early greenery stuff-I went to recycle again and got the large water bottles. I cut the bottom out of these jugs-They fit inside the 5 gallon buckets real good. I left them covering on the lettuce and such 24/7. They sweated on inside a lot and watered the things plus protection from frost. I took cover jug off to harvest some product then replaced water jug. I am going to raised beds this fall and winter. I guess I will be learning on these this next season. I will still have some buckets. I will continue to watch your videos-learning from our mistakes to become a better gardener. Have a great day. I love you. Dewayne Willis

I had chicken chicks from the hatchery 4 days old in an unheated chicken coop with (looks like) the same heat plates you're using, down to 15° Fahrenheit on their first night out. DH insisted. He's had immune issues (better now) and was afraid for them to be in the garage where he spends time. They were my first chicks and I hovered all night. They were fine. I don't worry any more. I know the quail chicks are a lot smaller body mass and more tender, but from what I've been able to research, they also are tougher than you'd expect.

I do container gardening and used the same soil you did last spring. My plants didn’t do well at all. All summer and fall, I amended (spent more $ to amend than I did for the soil). This fall a few plants began to take off. I’ll never use that soil again.

On the video a few months back on which they showed the brand of soil they were using to fill the pots, many viewers posted that they had had problems with the quality of that brand (although some did like it).

Thank you, thank you for sharing some of the struggles in farming! Lately, I had been having trouble with my backyard garden. I could not figure it out and after several years, yes, several years found out that it was wild rabbits eating my garden completely. Now, we moved it up off the ground and put a small 2-foot fence around it!! My lettuces are growing great! Hopefully, we solved the problem.

I garden in mostly containers and tend to put starts in them instead of seeds. I'm in zone 8a. I'm glad yall are figuring out the problem.🙂 Those containers will be over flowing with food soon, as usual.😄 Those piggies are too cute!😄

Weird weather is a huge culprit! In Florida, I seeded winter plants a year ago. Nothing! A couple weeks ago, they all sprouted and are taking off - amazing. The seeds are going to grow when they want to grow. LOL What I appreciate about you guys is the honesty and how you tackle problems. We all have them but giving up is no answer! Learn from your own mistakes and be happy with the successes! Knowledge is a great harvest.

Grandpa watched the finches each fall. As soon as they started to bed down he would start his fall season. He said, "don't start until you have two nights in the mid 50s back to back." Check ph of your soil before planting. Add minerals with organics.

I'm just here to say thanks for sharing the whole process. This year has brought many challenges with winter gardens for many homesteaders including myself. I'm currently struggling with some cold weather crops in containers as well! But I don't have a greenhouse! I follow quite a few farms/homesteaders and you're not the only ones who had a bad winter garden this year. Container gardening is more tricky than people first think. It's not the same as growing in ground. I find the plants grow slowly at first then once established they take off, keep at it. ✌️
