Goodbye Gilding

Good Lord. I thought you were saying goodbye! Glad this is a mod video instead!!! Shiny gilding is hard, sharp and uncomfortable. I really wish they didn't use it. I admit its pretty but not good overall for us or the environment. And if we are going to trim the gilding off, I wish they would just stop doing it. I think Hay House has stopped but not sure. I have the Lioness Oracle Tarot and it has the soft gilding which has a soft touch. I trimmed the Golden Tarot but kept the square edges and I need to finish it because its just too sharp. Golden Tarot turned out really well. Agree that some gilding makes it difficult to use decks. Better no gilding if it adds more cost to deck!

Loved all three mods! As you were choosing the inkpad for the Golden Tarot, I was trying to imagine how it would look if you had applied a different ink overlay to different sections of the deck - like the variegated edging you've done in the past but with the same base colour. If you ever go for that, I'd love to see the result! Thanks for sharing 💕

HI Dawn, When I trimmed my Mary El I used the Sakura Blister Card Pentouch Metallic Ink Marker in rose gold to write numbers and it is more permanent than those sharpies. Love your videos! - Caroline

Taking the borders of the Chronicles deck & edging it makes such a big difference. It makes me actually want to use the deck :)

Are those Crayola markers permanent? The ones I saw say 'washable'. Don't they come off with handling/mild perspiration?

They are washable and not permanent but in general they don't seem to come off with use. I know some people have had some mild transfer at first (but that can be true of any marker) but that seems to fade after a while. I haven't had any of my decks transfer after the initial edging, so far so good! 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

The golden tarot looks so much better. I was mentally saying “cut them white borders right off Dawn!” Lol. I adore that Tarot deck, but I’m still bewildered why the decision to retain the white border remained even when the card stock changed to linen. It’s not a deal breaker and pretty easy mod but still, the white stood out and wasn’t my cuppa coffee. I’m watching a bunch of your mod videos because I just started on my pretty big deck mod undertaking and of course I need inspiration, so who better? Lol. I really dislike the feeling of that sharp gold gilt edging as well. I have quite a few mass market decks that use that softer matte gold edging and so it’s obviously possible. I’m not quite sure why that scratchy ass gold gilding is still used, since you’re right, divination/reading cards is a very tactile experience. One of the ways I bond with my decks is shuffling them, a lot, but it takes me out of the experience when I keep nicking the cards or cards flying everywhere bouncing off the little lip that oftentimes that type of gilding leaves. Plus, it runs a real risk of the cards coming clumped together & needing to carefully pry them apart. Anywho, I’m going on a deck tangent so I’ll reel it in. I seem to have a habit of commenting on videos from years ago,lol. Love your videos, Dawn, the ones from years ago and the ones from the current, lol. Have a great weekend!

Man I just started watching and I have to say, trimming the Golden Tarot by Kat Black down to just the artwork made the whole deck sing for me. I started having just the titles, then when my corner rounder chewed up the corner of one of my favorite cards in the deck, The Moon, I just shrugged and chopped it down to art only. In the process of gilding my new, trimmed Golden Tarot with the Galaxy Gold dewdrop and I loooove it. Had the same problem, it was too sharp to handle!

I’m soooo tempted to do this with my sasauribito tarot since the building started flaking the minute I took it out. Interesting! I have the Influence of the Angels Tarot and I know what you mean about the feel of the edges. I never attributed that, however, to the application of gilding, so much as I thought it was just the manufacturing process of punch the cards out of printed sheets. Now, I wonder which is the culprit.

Hi, Dawn! Do you have any advice for a deck I edged in black Sharpie. It’s been months but every time I shuffle it I still get black transfer on my hands. 😭 I want to go over it in distress ink but idk if that will make the situation worse or better. TIA!

That's a total bummer when that happens! If it were me, I would probably try going over it again with another type of marker or stamp. Alternatively, depending on what deck it is and if it has borders, you could trim the edges off (just a sliver) and then reedge in something else. That's a bit more work so I'd probably do that as a last resort. Let me know how it turns out! 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

Hi Dawn Michelle, I've been pondering what to do with my brand new Golden Tarot. Straight out of the box some corners are delaminating. I'd like to trim it, but the pictures on mine are not centred or straight on the cards! I think I got a lemon. Did you find your Golden Tarot pictures were straight? Have you ever trimmed a deck where the pictures weren't straight? Thanks for any advice!

To be honest I don't remember if that particular one was or not, I have trimmed many that aren't straight. The Mythical Goddess comes to mind (I have a video of that process on my channel.) I first go through the deck to find the most off cards and then I use measurements to ensure that all the cards end up the same size. Just curious, have you ever thought about handwriting the names on the cards using a metallic marker/paint if it's difficult to recognize? Some people did that with the 1st Edition of the Mary El and I thought it worked well.

I did consider doing that, but I specifically didn't so that I would have to work with the book as I was getting to know the cards. If I hadn't been committed to working with it with the book I probably would have done that. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

Just curious. Could you have aged the titles instead of cutting them off, since its the white that wasn't in harmony? Or would the distressing inks have rubbed off over time?

I think it would depend on the cardstock. I haven't tried distressing a glossy deck, but in general I haven't had much luck getting ink/paint to stick to the gloss. Might be worth a try tho! 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️
