+Seliasei Same. I always romance Alistair as well, so even if he stayed a Warden it would be hard to let him go. And then, it's like I /was/ Hawke. How do you make that decision?
@Magpie5yndrome8 жыл бұрын
Whitney S Depends on if you made your Hawke a total jackass who pissed everyone off. And it depends on if they romanced anyone. Like, if they romanced Fenris (him being my personal favorite; I'm a sucker for awkward brooders apparently), I'm not letting Fenris down like that. Poor guy's been through enough. As Hawke says, Fenris would die to protect them. And it also depends on how much you like Varric. I'm personally not too fond of seeing Varric on the edge of tears.

People can say what they want about Dragon Age 2. But the friendships you can build in that game with your companions, is just damn great. Especially Hawke & Varric. It felt genuine and real. Considering Varric is not the type of character that would cry or be sad, seeing him in that state for the loss of Hawke, shows how deep their friendship was. Damnit BioWare. If there is one thing you guys are experts at, it's story telling.
@Thysillia8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Markwell I think one of the reasons I liked DA2 so much, despite a lot of issues when it comes to game mechanics, is that it's more personal. In DAO you're the Hero of Ferelden out to save the land. In DAI you're the Inquisitor, saving the world. In DA2 you're just... You. Living your life, doing the best with what you've been given.
@tastymeatballs27838 жыл бұрын
***** Which is something alot of people complained about. They didn't feel like they were saving the world in any way. You were finiding your place in Thedas as the Champion of Kirkwall. It's a story about Hawke and a really good one imho. Like you said, it's more personal and I like it for that. You don't have to be the "chosen one" to save a whole world for it to be a good story. It's underrated for it's story, but for the game mechanics, I can understand.
@Thysillia8 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Markwell Yeah. It's a shame its not more appreciated. Although towards the end, I was so tired of waves of mobs spawning everytime I stepped foot outside the door that I nearly cried. :D "here have 4 waves of pointless mobs"

Varric and Hawke; a friendship of the ages. Easily the strongest bond in the series, imo. My Hawke romanced Fenris, and tbh, the biggest reason I kept her alive was for Varric. Fucking ecstatic I chose to make Alistair king because I would have drank bleach before choosing between the two.
@iov10288 жыл бұрын
I felt it would have served better as a side game myself, i think a lot of the issue came from people wanting the next dragon age to be just as grand and big as dragon age origins, and it just wasnt.

You know, I think Hawke’s my favorite Dragon Age protagonist. The Hero of Ferelden had a duty as a Grey Warden to stop the Blight. The Inquisitor has no choice but to join the Inquisition if he wants to live. But Hawke does what he does because he’s there and is willing to make a choice about where he stands, no matter the consequences. Obviously the nuances are different for different people, but the mould remains
@MikaeruDaiTenshi2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Hawke did in DA2 everything just to survive. Fled to Kirkwall from the blight because they had no real choice. Sided with Mercenaries to even get into Kirkwall because there were too many refugees. A lot of stuff were just circumstances and they had to keep their position/money for their family. And for the last confrontation in Kirkwall, they still had a Sibling there, unless they became a Grey Warden. They fought Corypheus only because they stumbled upon him and because Cory was bound there by Papa Hawke's blood magic and they felt responsible for it. So no. Hawke didn't do what they did just because they're willing to make a choice no matter the consequences. They're very similar to the Inquisitor. Though the Inquisitor-Role is more "radically" lived than the Champion-Role.
@sasakelala33602 жыл бұрын
@@MikaeruDaiTenshi did you not play all those MANY side quests helping people? lol. Hawke was kind and helpful...at least in my playthrough. Plus he was super charming when you picked the corresponding answers. He also didn't HAVE to fight the Kunari dude.
@Nobody-sh4pu Жыл бұрын
@@MikaeruDaiTenshi Olorin did say "Obviously the nuances are different for different people" which meant it depends on how you played your Hawke. Some aren't though They got to Kirkwall, yes, but only with the help of Flemeth. You can't even say that's one sided help because Flemeth needed someone to bring over her locket to Marethari to ensure she'd stay alive even after Warden, Morrigan & co decide to kill her. Your affiliation with either the Red Iron or Athenril was beneficial, but Gamlen pretty much sold them into the organization--especially if you're a mage, since Gamlen told Red Iron you are one. Despite this, you have an option to choose to carry or refuse your contract. You can choose to spare Frederich and Lord Harimann from the contract, after which the Red Iron will take it a betrayal and try to kill you. Fast forward, Hawke makes a name for themself so they get hired for jobs to keep food on the table. All of them are against Slavers, Demon-controlled Templars, Blood Mages, Tal Vashoths, Mercenaries, Demons, Abominations and Darkspawn. When Hawke earned the title Champion of Kirkwall, the Arishok deemed literally no one else worthy of fighting him 1v1. At that point the Viscount was dead and Kirkwall was fucked. He wanted to re educate the whole city except Hawke didn't stood by. You earn the title by blood, by handing over Isabela (wtf who would do this tbh) or fighting for her life, your friend--because no one else will and no one else can. During the confrontation at Gallows, Hawke was the last person holding it together, since pretty much Orisono and Meredith went complete bonkers, but Hawke helped and killed both to stop them from wreaking more havoc because no one else would. Legacy was Hawke's last goodbye to Malcolm (and Leandra). As you said, it's their responsibility, so instead of running from the responsibility, Hawke helps and kills Corypheus because at that point, no one else could. Plus I agree with Sasa Kelala above me. Majority of Hawke's missions are people asking for help because they don't have the means, they don't anyone else to turn to and well, no one else can help. Depending on your friendship with Aveline, it's mentioned Hawke helps a lot with more serious cases or cases not reachable by guardsmen. Depending on your playthrough you also help the Templars (whether they get kicked or stay) and the Mages (freedom or sent back to circle), too before Act3. You can argue Hawke's all in it for the money, but a lot of quest even stay in your journal/quest list even if you refuse to help some assholes. Got nothing against Warden or Inquisitor since DAI was my first DA game and DAO holds special place in my heart, but the Inquisitor put it best: Hawke helped and saved people, not because they swore an oath or because they had a mark on their hand, but because someone had to do it. Haha, replaying DA series recently and I'm in DA2 now, so I had a lot to say^^
@RedEyedRaven93 Жыл бұрын
@@Nobody-sh4pu God I wish I could frame this explanation on my wall or something. The Warden and the Inquisitor were the classic RPG protagonists IMO, the nobodies who were pushed into facing a word threatening event due to fate or destiny. They're also fully customizable for the player to insert themselves into. (Looking back, Hawke being a human-only character was one of the gripes people had the time) What makes Hawke so endearing is that despite how you run their story (whether you're a benevolent do gooder, a bored, sarcastic person who does things for fun, or a selfish asshole) the decision feels personal, not justified by an invisible "greater good". In fact, Hawke may choose not to get themselves involved in the events of DA:I and just disappear into a distant land like Rivain since as far as they were concerned, they killed Corypheus. But they still chose to take responsibility and hunt that thing down. I hope BioWare finds a good balance between the personal and the global stories of the protagonist for DA 4. Edit : also, what I love in DA2 is, despite gaining the title "Champion of Kirkwall", to your friends and family, you're still good 'ol Hawke to them. In the other two games, your player character was still addressed rather formally even if you have supposed to have formed a bond to your companions.

Along with a overjoyed option too or something for when you affect your companions in a positive way.

My older sister played a sassy female Hawke and left her in the Fade. Her reasoning was that Hawke would kill the demon, cut it's head off (warrior Hawke), rip the Fade back open, and then end up showing up two years late (so after Trespasser) with a decapitated demon and Starbucks. I left Stroud because I love Hawke too much and I figured since it was true the Grey Wardens had kinda fucked up, a Grey Warden had better start fixing things.

A part of me thinks that since we never see him die, or find a body, whoever gets left behind (Hawke, Alistair etc.) may not actually die. Bioware have retconned characters that you can kill like Lelanna, so why not Hawke?
@isultansultangaliev58526 жыл бұрын
Martin Steell to be fair Trespasser epilogue suggests Inquisition Leliana was probably a spirit like Cole who took on a form of someone whose death left an imprint on them, probably a spirit of faith. If the warden kills her that is, it's a retcon but I kinda love this explanation.
@markokrstic35626 жыл бұрын
Martin Steell exactly. Anders and Leliana could both be killed, and you get silly explanations as to how they survived. Hawke surviving wouldn't only be expected, but it'd be following an already set precedent. Same thing happened with Mass Effect and the council. If you kill them, they just get replaced by nearly identical people. Bioware has a tradition with making "kill big characters or not" choices have no consequences. Not mad at them, they can still tell a good-ish story (Andromeda, why?), but their rpgs are becoming more and more linear and less interactive every damn game. Even Telltale is close to having their choices matter just as much as any Bioware rpg in the last 5 years, and that's saying a lot
@ThomBaws5 жыл бұрын
Except saving or not saving the council actually has an impact on the games and the new council is (to me) noticeably different, especially that rude ass Asari. Plus they explain and it makes sense why theres a new council. Dont think you can compare the council choices to Leliana's "bs"

I wonder what it says about Bioware's character writing given I'm more broken up about Varric being upset about Hawke's death than I am about the death itself.

This choice is SOOOOO hard if its between Alistair and Hawke.....
@phantommangagirl8 жыл бұрын
+Walter Camacho I chose Alistair, partly because I deserved a heroic death, and partly to not make Varric cry.
@DefectiveDetective4205 жыл бұрын
When I made that choice, I chose Hawke to stay. I had too much history with Alistair to let him stay, but when I heard the end, I knew I fucked up, even when I saw Varric heartbroken. ugly tears were shed that day

Bakers so you always make the evil choices and choose to not like his smart ass comments. That’s the only way he would be angry with you. You would have to be a dick in origins

I’ve never sacrificed anyone except Hawke, no matter who the Warden is
@predalien9021007 жыл бұрын
I could never make the choice of leaving Hawke in the Fade, I never could do it. I spent so much time in DA2 and I bonded with all of my friends and loved the characters as they went through many personal things together. And plus it was basically telling me to toss away a character that I hardly knew, for a character that I played as for 30+ hours and did so many things with. Seeing Varric like this, I'm glad each time I play through Inquisition that I never sacrifice Hawke instead of Stroud. I always placed Alistair on the throne, and I killed Loghain in Origins.

Has a staff, but runs up to the big monster to hit it with said staff in melee combat instead of using magic from afar. Sure, that makes sense.

I expected Hawke to use magic and survive, sinds it said "Hawke will *probably* die"
@leftknee179 жыл бұрын
Dragonmots I know this is a super long ago post, but i think he might've ended up possessed by the demon. Maybe he even does it so that it can't possess someone in the non-fade world. Regardless, I doubt he's dead. They wouldn't put probably in the sentence if he was certainly going to die.

I kept Hawke alive because, when the three great heroes of the Dragon age come together don't want to see the warden morrigan and kieran standing alongside the inquisitor and cassandra comforting Merrill as she stands over the third hero's tomb.

Is there ever just an option where you put your head down and go “... I’m sorry Varric, Hawks didn’t make it.” Everything sounds like a man trying to make everything sound embellished. “If not for him, we would never have made it, he died a hero” I don’t like that.

I just can't kill Hawke. It makes Varric so sad but it also hurt other characters. Obviously Carver/Bethany who are the only ones alive of the family if none of them died in the deep roads. And then your love interest. My Hawke romanced Anders so just imagine what it would do to him. Hawke was pretty much the only think keeping Anders from losing it so I think Justice would take over almost permanently.

When I first did a run through of the DA series, I kept Alistair a warden and hated DA2. So sacrificing Hawke was an easy choice. 5 years later I did another run through and fell in love with DA2. I can’t ever justify Hawke dying and hurting Varric and his friends anymore. U g h
