BBC Radio Stoke's legendary commentator Nigel Johnson will hang up the mic after 54 years of service to broadcasting. We spoke to the man himself and a few of his colleagues to find out what makes him the voice of Stoke City.

Im 33 now i remember the year We Got promoted We couldnt afford to renew our season tickets and i would Tune in to radio stoke for nige and his comentary made Me feel like i was at the game Been brilliant This season as i now have an overseas season ticket so have had his comentary again Will miss his voice he is the voice of stoke enjoy your retirement Nigel !!! ❤ “Lip Of the center circle Hoists the Ball forward Turns and checks , Hugging the touchline “

What a lovely video. I have been listening to Stoke for over 40 years and there has always been one voice and that had been Nige. All the very best Nigel. Mr Stoke and a legend. I will always remember having to miss the Leicester match when Stoke got the vital point for promotion to the Premier League in 2008. I was at a wedding and I rushed to my car for the result. “There are grown men crying” you said. I was then one of them. I was there through you, even though I couldn’t be on that wonderful occasion. Let’s hope those tears of joy flow again.

Nigel was my headmaster at Heron Cross primary and was a real inspiration and was particularly encouraging of me. This meant a lot with mot having a dad in my life and I still feel his encouragement and passion for education spurred me on to succeed thank you Nigel I have never forgotten you have a very happy retirement 😃❤ Lorraine Wilkinson nee Tremble 😃
