2:36 In terms of the art direction of this game, it's so far it looks like the artists just went with humans with animal features slapped on like they were picrew characters. It feels like the artists were too afraid to go with full furry features so they still tried to make them look as human as possible, which just make them look off to me. And with Trish's triceratops features, I think they should have emphasized that more by making the horns and frill bigger and not putting on hair. If I were playing this game, I wouldn't even realize Trish was a triceratops the first time I saw her.

I really think that they should’ve leaned more into the traits the dinosaurs were known for instead of trying to minimise them. For example, Trish is supposed to be the quirky, big obsessed one. Why not have her decorate her horns with colourful rings or bands, or hell she could even have a spider web between her horns to really emphasise her big obsession. Or what about Naomi? Well, she’s a parasaurolophus, a dinosaur known for its head crest that it used to make trumpet-like calls. Why not make her a musician as well, but have her play the trombone? Not only does it suit the dinosaur, but her love of music could possibly give her and Fang something to bond over. And then there’s the character sage, that orange dinosaur with purple hair. Apparently he’s supposed to be a microraptor. A dinosaur known for its glossy, black feathers. They could’ve made him a goth or something like that, and made him really nihilistic and spout of thing that sound like they come from r/im14andthisisdeep, but in an ironic, jokey sort of way.

Honestly I felt way more bad for the anthropomorphic dinosaurs going extinct in Jim Henson's Dinosaurs than I did the "extinction" that these Tumblrsaurs were going to face especially when there is no angst or existential dread about the apocalypse. The art sums up this lack of care or thought in this story as it's just as unremarkable as how the characters seem to view the fact they are going to get meteor'd soon.

Fr. Could be a game about a bunch of teenagers coming to terms with their lifes ending, with the fact that they all wont be able to become adults or fullfil their dreams, where it shows dinos freaking out, causing riots, all sort of stuff. But instead its just school drama.

@@barbararab6390 Exactly. Heck even a low key downer ending works too like in the aforementioned Jim Henson's Dinosaurs. The series ends with main character essentially causing the Dino apocalypse, and now everyone including him and his family are freezing to death so he spends the last 5 minutes of the show apologizing to his family for not taking better care of the world so his kids can inherit it. For a show that was, up until that point, a fairly lighthearted satirical comedy, it was a very poignant and really somber ending. No big meteor or spectacle of fire and brimstone. No one final moment of joy. It's a cold, somber, acceptance of the ice age you helped caused killing everyone around you. No way a game like that could even do that right.

It could've been a fascinating part to the story. Everyone reacts differently to the idea of death, especially when it's something this much out of their control. Sadly, everyone in this game either ignores it or just gets sad and melancholy. Where are the rioters? Where are the preppers? Where's the cult worshiping the meteor? Where's the guy who refuses to allow a meteor to dictate their fate and takes things into their own hands? If you wanted to have a good "your choices matter", have Fang navigating their friends all taking these different ideas and going with one of them.

Another thing is there's no internal world logic. The clothing is designed for humans. And not people with large noses. They would not be able to fit themselves through the neck hole. They're wearing shirts that really make no sense for wings to fit through. There's that rhino guy in that hallway shot, on the right. His tail is so huge. The hole for it would cut off the belt. So how is that belt holding on? The pink guy's pants would never work. It needs to be put on by buttons. But he doesn't have any kind of way to button from the back. So he should be wearing no pants. Jim Henson's Dinosaurs series made way more sense.

I wouldn't have minded if they had either toned it back and made the designs more kemonomimi, with fully human bodies and SOME more dinosaur traits, because then they could keep their funny colors, OR if they had gone all the way and made them ACTUAL DINOS in their bodies, clawed digitigrade legs and all! I was a teenage exocolonist is honestly one of the best teenage focused games I have personally played. It’s one of the most adult teen rated games I have ever played with all the psychological themes it has. Even characters who come across as unlikable some of the time have interesting history and reasons as to why they act the way they do as humanity uses new augment enhancements that are evolve their bodies or personalities in ways that can feel beneficial, but also come with a cost as a result.

I don’t think there is necessarily a problem with pastel dinosaurs or cutesy animals that are usually tough and menacing. It can be done and has been done incredibly well, it all depends on what you do with it and the story. Land Before Time certainly had some adorable pastel-ish dinosaurs but still made the scary ones scary, it captured the scale and grandeur, it handled friggin racism and dealing with grief after a loved one passes. To a lesser extent I’ve seen childrens shows run with idea of dinosaurs that are similar to people, Dinosaur Train and Barney, and love ‘em or hate em they are successful. However I’m comparing these to things little ones have seen, let’s give this a fair chance. What about the show Dinosaurs? All of them were anthro, it was a sitcom which meant it had comedy, romance, drama, all that jazz with some of the softest roundest sweetest most placid dinos ever but you know the hell what? Spoiler alert, the last episode they all die, they had to see cute characters we’ve come to love die by their own fault in the final episode. Why is it the 90s show about talking modern age dinosaurs that had a heavy comedic angle was darker, more emotional, and better looking than this trash?

People have told me that ‘it’s just the creator’s art style not everything has to be hyper-realistic’. Needless to say, 1. There _is_ such a thing as too much stylization, when you fail to make the audience realize what your characters are supposed to represent and they can’t understand till they do research about them, then yes, you did a poor job. 2. There _is_ such a thing as an ugly art style, a combination of bad choices and unintentional decisions in color schemes, proportions, shape use, lines, shading (or lack there of), texture, if doing art was so easy and instinctual we’d all be Dalì, like people who say stuff like this seem to forget sometimes you need to do extensive planning, studying and trashing before obtaining something pleasing, I can tell the creators of GVH have been pretty lazy. EDIT: and I need to stress how important point 1 is since the artist’s job is to interpret reality (not copy it, that’s photography, and they tried to imply I wanted perfect-picture renditions when I criticized it lmao), you can’t just do whatever you want, because you’re working with references (hopefully) in this case of real breathing (dead but still) animals. Land Before Time is not realistic, not even close, it’s outdated as HELL, yet you could turn the characters into anthros and you’d still be able to tell exatly what species they are, while the main girl in GVH looks like a damn fantasy creature, the art team of LBT didn’t have the unlimited knowledge of Google, so that makes it even worse.

Goodbye Volcano High's character designs can be summerised as "hey y'know highschool based cartoons, what if those humans, were also dinosaurs". And I don't understand why the characters are the dinosaurs that they are or why they don't have a wider range of appearances, what I mean is you can only barely make out whay kind of dinosaur each character is meant to be, except Read I have no idea what he's meant to be. I also appreciate Jack mentioning the voice acting, because the direction makes them come off as very stilted, which is a shame, because Read and Naomi are voices by Mark Whitten and Allegra Clark respectively. Mark being the voice of Kaedehara Kazuha in Genshin Impact, Kyojuro Rengoku in Demon Slayer and recently Kurt Connors/Lizard in Spiderman 2 and Allegra is Beidou in Genshin Impact, Maki Zen'in in Jujutsu Kaisen and Marisa in Street Fighter 6. The other voice actors are very unknown, but Mark and Allegra are literally some of the most known voice actors from the last 5-10 years, and its a shame they're talents were wasted on whatever the fuck kind of tumblr 2011 shit this game is

I refuse to accept that these are Dinosaurs, they remind me WAY more of Posthuman species from the book "All Tomorrows", mainly how the fandom depicts it's species, I actually thought that the characters were MEANT to be Posthumans because I saw a shitpost about this game that ties it with All Tomorrows, Reed (The Velociraptor Guy) looks alot like a Satyriac, Fang looks like an anthro hybrid between a Pterosapien and a Toolbreeder, It makes sense because they have been way too humanized, they aren't Dinosaurs, they are mutant humans that evolved millions of years in the future to become the various bizarre species in All Tomorrows.

a story with a inteligent dinosaur species coping with the realization the asteroid is coming to wipe them out at a current day tech level could be really cool the silurian hypothesis exists for a reason. but not on high school drama bullshitte that even in universe the characters care more about then there impending doom.

Fang design made me think she was some kind of bird dolphin hybrid mix none of them look like dinosaurs if you ask me, I think they failed trying to remake the beastars designs, they both have animal heads on human bodies but at least beastars made it look more natural and appealing to the eyes

The designs are so humanoid, that they could easily just be humans. An art teacher told me once, that, if you use a non-human creature as your character, it needs to have traits of that creature. If it walks like a human, talks like a human, acts like a human, lives like a human, then it should be just a human. Other dinosaur characters that were very anthropomorphic, such as the ones in Jim Henson's Dinosaurs or the ones from Extreme Dinosaurs, still had traits of those creatures in their personalities and designs.

It’s amazing what good character design does for a player’s investment. The comparison between GVH and Snoot Game is night and day, and made me care so much about my choices. Whereas in GVH, I was rooting for the meteor the whole time.

As a pretty good artist, I, for some reason, don't hate it at all...I like the colors and the animations, even the style is not that bad. But the designs of these characters are goofy af, I thought MC was a dolphin :"D Like for me it's doesn't look THAT terrible, it's just that the designs are so stupid and the vibes are so tumblry so I definitely couldn't take the story and the problems seriously.

It's not so bad at my opinion.This artstyle give me the anime-ish look where characters have same body type and big shiny eyes. Not related but Papa Louie has cartoonist style but the character design and body types kinda diversity.Some of them may not pretty ( ahem, weird looking) but realitist and not easy to forget. Edit 2: i mean GVH has interesting designs too but it reminds me of Mihoyo games...

Yeah, the biggest problem I saw was that you cannot tell those are supposed to be dinosaurs without being told. I think I thought the main chick was a dolphin angel before finding out she's a pteradactyl? In general I have a big issue with characters having an animal head and then basically human bodies (part of why I didn't like beastars lol) weirds me out.

I’m planning on redesigning the entire main cast of this hogwash, but I’m making them actual dinosaurs that just wear clothes and go to high school, cus imo if they were more dino and less human they’d be wayyy more appealing to look at, (regardless of they have the pastel colours or not) Plus it’d make the story more depressing that when the characters do die and when their fossils are found thousands of years later by humans (idc if humans are not in the story or not I’m adding them), ppl will just think of them as animals and non intelligent beings So basically A really bittersweet ending

I think stuff like the Jimmy Timmy Power Hour lends credence to the idea that 2D is often a better medium for portraying a cartoonish character than 3D, which Snoot Game reinforces. The designs are tweaked, mostly due to the game made while GBVH was in dev hell and all, but mostly the big difference is everyone's just in 2D. Everyone looks more expressive while normally maintaining a single perspective, making cases when they break that single perspective like the game's CGs more impactful. The 3D animation here also feels lazy, like the mouths aren't really animated, not like they were shown to be in betas, with serpentine tongues and all but just kind opens and closes when they talk and stuff in a rather boring way. And everyone looks painfully androgynous, like they're trying to convey human features but are too scared to, except for guys sometimes. Snoot Game went all in on the human-like dinosaur idea, yet here they kind of chicken out. Well, there's a lot they chickened out on but that's a *story* for another time, I'm sure.

Personally, my only issue with the dino designs is that bird wings simply aren't correct for a pterosaur. I saw the reveal video and thought the premise was neat.... and then the next time I heard about it was "nonbinary dinos" and I immediately lost interest. Lo and behold, like every other time "diversity" was advertised above everything else, the product advertised in that matter has nothing else really going for it. *Probably* not as bad as High Guardian Spice, but that's a low bar.

i know that Pterosaurs possibly had feathers, but i feel like it really does Fang a disservice since it's unknown whether or not Pterosaurs actually had feathers or not. honestly, if they wanted a feathered MC that wasn't a Pterosaur, go with the Microraptor or the Archaeopteryx since they're both pretty cool as well and they've pretty much been confirmed to very likely have feathers longer than Pterosaurs, where the ambiguity of the possibility reached a high point in the theory that Pterosaurs were on their way to evolving to the point of having feathers only came about last year! to add onto the feather thing, i think it would've been neat to see her feathers change according to her emotions since it's also been theorized that Pterosaurs could control and change the colors of their feathers at the cellular level and that they could be used for display, almost like modern birds! :) source: the Natural History Museum in London

02:30 this might have come from modern paleo art ideas since birds are living dinosaurs but the bright feathers of birds would have been seen in dinosaurs close to the lineage that lead to birds so not Triceratops. Also other people have probably said this but Pterosaur wings were formed by a elongated pinky finger and a wing mebrain connected to the arm and well pterosaurs did have a covering of fur like structures called phygnofibers they aren’t the same thing as feathers even if they Lilly share an origin from a pterosaurs and dinosaurs last ancestor. How they took one of the most unique group of extinct animals and ended up with a six limbed mutant dolphin is beyond me

i dont really really know the game much-- didnt finish the video but i wanted to share some fun stuff since im also figuring stuff design wise it helps a ton to just, show your art to someone and ask them what they see, if they guess wrong but catches the details its all good (: *you* only have the specifics im no furry connoisseur (i have a ton of furry friends but im not too good at figuring what animals is which quite exactly) but i can tell blacklightjack's oc ... sona ? ... character is kinda like a cool chill dude but wont hesitate to show his teeth, and is also working out with his arms my lil opinion :D < could be totally wrong but i like to share fun stuff

Tbh I didn’t find the character design that bad until I saw Naomi. The character design they were going for with making them a literal scalie clashes too much for me. Some of the characters are alright in design and look like something you’d see in furry art, and then like a good 75% of them just don’t look great at all.
