This film begins our foray into Crime and Punishment Madness. In my opinion it is one of the greatest Gangster movies ever made. martin Scorcese at his peak. Ray Liotta, Robert Deniro, Joe Pesci star in this monument to filmmaking.

The Gambino family knew about the murder of Batts for a long while before, but the Lucchese family convinced them to let him stay alive as he was a great moneymaker. When they heard he was promised to become a made man, they and Paul Vario agreed to whack him for his many transgressions (lifting his mask during the Lufthansa heist and the mentioned attempted rape on Henry Hill's wife who Vario was having an affair with.) When asked how he felt about hearing Tommy was dead, Hill said "Relieved."

I love Goodfellas. It’s my favorite movie of all time. Watching you both enjoy it but also dissect some of the technical choices that made the movie so memorable was a true pleasure! Fun fact: the newspaper that Henry picks up on his doorstep at the very end of the movie is The Youngstown Vindicator. Youngstown, Ohio was once a big mob town. The members of the Pittsburgh and Cleveland mobs lived there. My mother grew up on the West side of Youngstown in the 50s and 60s. Her neighbor a street over received a "Youngstown Tune-Up" which was a car bomb! After the steel mills closed in the late 70s, the mob presence slowly dissipated and the street gangs took over. in 1995 and 97, Youngstown was "America's Most Dangerous City." That would have never happened if the mafia was still in power as they kept the violence away from the "civilians."

8:21 I think what some people forget about LaCosa Nostra is that anyone could be an associate. As long as you had something to offer $$$ Doesn’t necessarily mean you can be made. But hell the 3 main mafia characters of this story weren’t even made. People knock Henry for his self portrayal of what happened but one thing is true is his natural ability to network through the industry of organized crime. One thing’s for sure: everyone DID know Henry, but they didn’t think as highly as he apparently thought of everyone else.. lol Mike Franceze didn’t even understand why he was put in the movie!

Supposedly, that’s also a no-no.. but at the end of the day, it’s all about making money, and unfortunately the old timers had a point when they talk about “following the rules” because where is the mafia today? Karen was playing hide the sausage for Henry but IRL Big Pauly got out of prison first and was playing "hide the sausage" with Karen while Henry was still locked up.

Great reaction. It isn't a traditional cop or crime movie, but I'd love to see the two of you react to Chinatown, my personal favorite movie from the 70s. I'd also recommend The Friends of Eddie Coyle, an outstanding crime film with Robert Mitchum, Peter Boyle and Richard Jordan. It deserves to be much better known than it is. Have you seen it, Richard?

Great movie and reaction! One thing Scorsese mentions in interviews is he wanted Goodfellas to feel like it was filmed by gangsters. So you can see a lot of mistakes like continuation errors through out the movie.

The push-zoom scene in the diner, what it signifies is, on the outside things look normal, but everything has changed. Henry realized he's going to be whacked, and thus knowing that he's now comfortable to order breakfast, all the cards are on the table.

Actually even more specifically it was to signify the outside world closing in on them. As it wasn't your average push-in with it just pushing in from the diner only. It was a camera trick designed to make the things outside push in slowly too. An optical illusion within the camera itself.

@@agitatedmongoose That is what i am referring to. From inside the diner everything seems normal, but outside the diner window things were changing. Interesting on the closing in aspect, first Henry, then eventually Jimmy. But it was in Scorsese's own words discussing the shot, which the DP thought was nuts, that it showed on the surface Henry and Jimmy were still friends, allies, but outside the window things had changed, Jimmy was maneuvering to whack Henry, so no longer are they allied, but adversaries.

I just realised that when Tommy makes the guy dance and shoots him in the foot, Christopher does the same to the guy in the patisserie in The Sopranos. It only took me about ten viewings.

The push-in in the diner near the end wasn't your average push-in though. It wasn't pushing in from the diner only. It is a camera trick that makes it look like the outside world was closing in on them.

Hill wasn’t even a soldier. He’s was basically just a low level associate. Hill made his role seem a lot more important than it was, according to Franzese. You might also notice they used Michael Franzese name in the opening scene where he’s introducing all the guys in the bar.

As much as I love a good kitchen scene, for me it's the "flying table" that makes that tracking shot attain the level of sublime perfection. Nice catch on perfectly labeling it as a flying table. 👍

The singer Ashanti made a Video for her Song "Foolish". It stars her, and Terrence Howard. It recreates scenes from "Goodfellas" throughout the Video. It's interesting, and fun to watch.

I wonder, of all the shots in the whole movie, how many have a completely stationary camera? (Ha- the most notable exception would be the completely still camera when no one at the table is moving when Tommy asks Henry why he thinks he's a funny guy.) (Hmm...I suppose the other exception would be the several freeze frames sprinkled throughout.)

Don't know if this is fact or lore, but I've heard a number of times that the scene in which Joe Pesci asks "how am I funny", was supposedly improvised, and the reactions of Ray Liotta (and everyone else's) were unscripted as well. If true, that's somewhat amazing!

It almost strains belief that Major has never seen this movie until now! But those were honest reactions!! Also: excellent edit of some key scenes, like the classic "do I amuse you?" scene, or the classic tracking shots. Also: hilarious story about seeing it in the empty theater with that girl! One thing they don't get into in the movie is that Henry enlisted in the army, the 82 Airborne. He did that to escape the life. However he still engaged in gangster activities during his time there before being discharged. He lasted 3 years in the military. He was always trying to do things that would enable him to leave the past behind and move on. But somehow he kept getting pulled back in, so to speak.

Henry was an associate of the family, never a member. As he points out, he was half Irish disqualifying him from entry. Hence the interest (at least in the movie version) he and Burke had in DeSimone getting made.

Him being half Irish isn’t what disqualified him. It was that his father was Irish. If it was reversed and his mother was Irish and his father Italian then he could have been made. An Italian father was required that could be traced to to the home country.

The distinction made vs. not made, in practice it was very political. Tommy made a lot of money for Paulie, so if Batts had killed Tommy, then Paulie could have made a beef and demanded money. Paulie was actually protecting Tommy for that reason until he attacked Karen, who Paulie was having an affair with. At that point Paulie sold him out to Batts' crew to get rid of him, in such a way that he could avoid alienating Jimmy who was an even bigger cash cow for Paulie.

Jimmy Burke but Henry Hill wasn't a mad guy couldn't be a mad guy his mother was his father was Irish his mother was Italian if his father was Italian possibly but not at that time only in the 90s did they do the whole only her father has to be Italian prior to that you had to be Italian on both sides and be able to trace your family back to Italy so Henry wasn't a made guy he was a hang around and associate in some of the things he conflated to be his experience was actually Michael Francis father son and Francis it's the only cat I know of who's ever gotten a table front and center at the Copacabana and he got a table put on the stage of the Copacabana when Frank Sinatra was singing Sunny Francis not Henry Hill and anything to do with Henry Hill was Jimmy Burke and Jimmy connections

Please don't give me wrong you could feel this is a great movie but for going like mob movies is my favorite would go Godfather Donnie Brasco A Bronx Tale the Gotti movie with Armand desante in this would fall somewhere in between. How about heat that's a cops and robbers right it's a great movie
