This scene right here shows how unpredictable and dangerous mob life is. Because one second you’re laughing and every thing seems fine but in the next second someone says the wrong thing to the wrong guy and in that split second moment it could mean the difference between life and death. The tension in that scene slowly builds when Billy is busting Tommy’s chops about once being a shoeshine boy. Then it comes to a point where the tension subsides when Billy apologizes but then it explodes when Billy insults Tommy again. Tommy without realizing it in the moment not only decides to end Billy’s life but his own. That is what being in that life entails any decision that you make no matter how innocuous it seems could result in getting you killed .

Had ANY of them quit while they were still ahead, they would have became redeemed Christians with outstanding testimonies. Especially Tommy, the worse of the bunch. GOD gave him enough time to repent in his 28 years, but once he decided in his mind and heart, he would keep on living and killing, GOD was through. He took His mercy away. That's how GOD works. The mafia is a cursed way of life . All who indulge, bound themselves by a curse and only JESUS can break it. GOD'S love is for all, but we ALL HAVE CHOICES. Either Heaven or Hell, life or death. "

I've always said this a perfect scene as to why Pesci won the Oscar. The totality of the film Tommy was a demon through and through, his every action was deplorable. In this scene he knew he made a catastrophic mistake and for a brief moment he was humanized and you actually felt genuinely bad for Tommy. The way he says "I didn't wanna get blood on your floor" will always stick with me. No one could deliver that line better than Pesci.
