I've had those 2-stage gas valves fail right out of the box. If it's been dropped in the box prior to installation that valve will tend to come apart. I ALWAYS check the physical integrity while at the van/truck. That was a good diagnosis by previous tech but he failed in not doing a flame sensor cleaning. Only takes 5 minutes and it eliminates "wondering" why the flame drops out. Great job Ted 👍🏾

You’re failing to check the inducer vent switch. Yes, cleaning the flame sensor is the first thing to check. But afterwards check the vent switch before condemning the gas valve. If the vent switch doesn’t close ( or is weak in closing due to a weak diaphragm) or the tube is restricted, could cause an intermittent circuit to the gas valve

Knew it was the valve on the initial start when you jiggled the wires at the valve and it fired. Have replaced many of those for that reason. Also new valve responds much quicker to the call than the other valve! Those Goodmans came with 2 stage valves where you get a call at w and set dip switches on the board for 1 or 2 sages with a 10 min delay between 1 and 2 or it goes from 1 to 2 after start when set to single stage. I would never have used a $100 bill on a Goodman, they are only worth $1, unfortunately they do not make a smaller denomination! Scrub it with a penny next time. @seangriffon65023 жыл бұрын
Ted. I have to wonder if maybe there was some corrosion on the terminals inside that molex connector that plugs into the valve as well as the terminals on the valve itself as it fired when you wiggled the connector. Looks like i see a lot of corrosion on the top of tbe burner box like maybe the ac condensate is leaking down into the furnace and it got into the connector of the valve. I have seen this many times. I just take some electronic cleaner spray and use that to clean the male and female terminals and that usually corrects the problem. Also i check the condensate line coming out of the coil drain pan, and find it to be loose, so i make the needed repairs to it as well. I have seen many rusty flame sensors caused by a faulty ac condensate drain line connection due to water dripping down into that area over the summer time, it's one of my most common service calls when the customer turns on the heat for the first time of the season and there is no heat. Hope changing the value fixed your problem.
@Garth20113 жыл бұрын
There's more to consider with gas valves...safety concerns. If they stick and won't open, they will also stick open and not close just the same so the only fix on a gas valve is to diag and confirm the gas valve is not 100% working then, replace it, even if you can do a repair on it. Liability is on you if it's repaired vs. replacing the part plus the safety hazards need to be taken into consideration. Just an opinion...

My DIY instincts would use an Ohm meter to confirm the flakey gas valve internal coil connection. It can be repaired without even removing the valve... The coil windings inside the gas valve are friction fit into vee shaped slots on the back of that Molex connector. That junction oxidizes and eventually fails to make a reliable connection. A quick scrape and some solder will fix that forever. The reasonable responsible pro repair is exactly what you did; just replace the valve! lol, The replacement may eventually have that same problem... sooner or later.
@jman08703 жыл бұрын
I would never attempt to solder anything in a gas valve. You assume all liability for homemade repairs and when that homemade repair makes fire you are flirting with disaster.
