Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I kzbin.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

Absolutely nailed it. Without question it's the installer. The bad part is that it's almost impossible for the average Joe to figure out who is a good installer. After the first four installers that I used to install on homes that I built, I started using the installer that I used from then on. Same with my electric guy, same with my roofer, framer, basement/flatwork, and finish trim.

In 2011, I replaced my (2) 47 yo systems with 2 Goodman 2.5 ton 12 SEER units...from circuit breakers to cutoffs, to air handlers, etc...everything. I had 3 modifications made: Larger filter boxes, TXVs and sight glasses with moisture detectors installed. Otherwise the systems were as simple as possible...single stage, no WiFi controls, etc. I watched the installations VERY carefully (I have a license) and the tech did a very good job. This is absolutely CRITICAL! There is only ONE way to do a system installation and each of many small details is vitally important to longevity. MANY installations are not correctly done and failures result. Unfortunately they are often attributed to the equipment. Consumers simply don't know. As to "maintenance", I do nothing at all except keep the area around the condensers clean, check the condenser coils to be sure that air flows freely ( do not use harsh cleaners and NEVER chlorine around any aluminum coils). I never allow "annual checkups" or any such things. I do check supply and return temps as general indicators of function. That's it. If I could change anything about the systems I have it would be thicker steel for the cases. However they show no signs of wear. They sit on isolators to protect them from contact with the concrete pad. If you want added "insurance" for your systems, keep a spare start/run capacitor handy so you won't become a victim of "cap bandits".
@NewHVACGuide
@NewHVACGuide 3 жыл бұрын
Some good advice. I’m not sure I agree they are free of maintenance but sounds like you know what you’re doing 🙂
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 3 жыл бұрын
@@NewHVACGuide Maintenance = keeping the condenser coils reasonably clean, area around the units free of debris and shaded, if possible, filters clean and healthy environment for coils, but not attaching and detaching gauges to functioning systems. That's just creating problems. The key to a happy relationship with AC systems is meticulously correct installation. And very often that's not done. Oh, and if you're foolish enough to have unnecessary electrical gadgets added to your system, install a surge suppressor, too. And don't run them during lightning storms. I cut the power to them.
@andrewcash3855
@andrewcash3855 3 жыл бұрын
@@wholeNwon I keep hearing how critical the install is. I’m currently debating Goodman or RUUD 3.5 ton 14-15 seer systems. AC and 80k BTU gas furnace. Goodman $2700, RUUD $3600. Install is $600. First, which equipment would you buy? Second, what particular critical aspects of the install can I watch closely and ensure are done well? Thanks
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewcash3855 I know nothing about the offerings of various makers any more. Considering the price difference, what appeals to you about the Ruud system? Will the same tax credits, if any, apply to both? I never had to deal with hot air furnaces, just boilers. Personally, I specified Copeland scroll compressors. I think Ruus uses a different maker (Paloma?). I kept my systems as simple as possible...single stage...and that worked for my house. If you're putting in a heat pump, you'll have to do more research. I'm happy with my Goodman systems so far (just 10 yrs). As to installation: All brazing must be done under nitrogen. Technique must be good. Learn how, if you don't know. Sharp bends in lines should be avoided. I would install sight glass with moisture detector and put it inside rather than outside. When plumbing complete, the system must be evacuated and that might take a long time. The humidity was high when mine were done and the pump was left running for almost 16 hr. Then the manometer was watched for another 8+ hr. before charging. After running, confirming proper function, valves and joints again checked for leaks. When gauges were connected, hoses should have been filled with fresh refrigerant first. In my case, one Schrader core was replaced. All plastic caps were replaced with bronze. Makers provide installation instructions. Read them for specific details. I have a large concrete pad for the units but had each placed on plastic, too, to prevent case contact with the concrete. You don't want the coating to ever be scratched anywhere. Never completely cover the outside cabinet in the winter. I use split tennis balls and a piece of plywood weighted down to protect mine from tree debris when the AC season is over. Good luck.

Goodman builds their systems with common components which are readily available, and mass produced by 3rd party manufacturers to Goodmans specs. You can find repair parts from just about any supplier when you need them. Some of the other companies make OEM parts that you have to purchase from them which increases the profit for them and cost to you.

The last 2 units I had on my home were Goodman packaged units, the first unit lasted 16 years, and the one I just replaced lasted a little over 14 years, the first unit only had a bad contactor and a bad run cap during its 16 year life, the other unit's only issue was a pin hole in the accumulator which wouldn't have occurred if the grommet that it was seated into the base with hadn't dry rotted. Goodman warrantied the part but not labor and the cost new refrigerant, trying to find an honest contractor that had any intent on doing the warranty repair on my then 7 year old unit instead of trying to quote me a new system was another story, but certainly not Goodman's fault. I did get the part replaced and it never had an issue for another 7 1/2 years. I just had another Goodman installed 2 months ago, they seem to last and hold up in the 8+ months of Florida's 90+ degree days.

Sold Goodman units for 25 years. They used to be great. Then Daikin bought them out. In 2010 they became crap. Not sure if all the problems are Daikin related or if it’s the 410a refrigerant and the micro coils they started using. I wouldn’t sale a Goodman unit to my worst enemy now! With that said, truthfully all units are crap now! Yes, they are more energy efficient but no longevity. If you get 10 years out of one now you should have purchased a lottery ticket at the same time. All this Green Energy bull crap is going to make it where the average person will soon be unable to afford central air!

He is correct in that 90% of HVAC problems are caused by inexperienced or poorly trained staff. This is where young technicians learn their trade, doing installs and replacements often by making mistakes and running callbacks. The top notch techs are doing commercial work, as it pays more. When you see a Carrier or Trane priced 50% higher, remember the markup is also 50% higher, resulting in more profit to the contractor. Also, Carrier and Trane parts are nearly all OEM, so repairs are much more expensive

100% agree on the assesment, its the good, proper installation process that makes a system last, plus of course the owners responsible interactions with their system ( checking the basics and obvious, inside filters replacement, outside condenser location and condenser itself cleanliness, no leaves, no debris , no tall grass growing the sides of the outside unit blocking the airflow). Most problem is, hard to find or look for really good installers on where we live, can be done by trial and error on different a/c servicers, and then you stick to that tech guy,.. thank you so much for your so informative videos, that helps us informed on dos and dont's , and in turn helps us extend the life of our a/c system, when most of us can't just afford to have a new one right away...

You hit on everything I've encountered with Goodman. Installed properly they are a nice unit to install for people that don't need or want or can afford all the bells and whistles. I believe it IS the Installer. I’m using the same AC guys and service my system spring and fall with them. Only a few issues and that was due to the slime buildup in the pipe that created an overflow of the pan. My AC guy showed me how to mainline that line to eliminate this issue. I'm glad I found this video - whew. Our furnace has a cracked heat exchanger (and other problems, as diagnosed by multiple repairmen) and we don't have a lot of money. As a matter of fact, it's a Goodman built in 1996. We just bought a used Goodman furnace for $500 from Craigslist, yesterday. The thing was owned by an elderly guy who installed it in 2017 and who had it professionally cleaned every year - the thing looks new. The guy's kids, who inherited the house, were told it was really too small for the 2,200 foot house and wanted to upgrade. I called an installer and he said he wouldn't even install the thing because it was a Goodman. He also said he couldn't believe we paid 500 bucks for the thing. I knew it was a lower end brand, but, I was shocked that this guy wouldn't even install the thing. Like I said, we're replacing a Goodman that is from 1996. Reading the comments and listening to this video I feel a little better. And, we have insurance that pays for repairs.

I agree with what you said about the installers. After I bought a house, I became concerned about its Goodman heat pump. It seems to be hammering. I called a reputable HVAC firm to have it checked out. My suspicion proved correct. There was too much freon, I was told, probably because is shipped with extra (which is OK), and the installer did not bleed that off. I'd love to hear your advice about how to extend the life of heat pumps. For cooling, for instance, I run mine first thing in the morning when it is still cool out. I chill my house a bit extra by letting it run continuously rather than going on and off. Then I cut it off and let my home coast through the heat of mid-day. For that it helps to have good insulation.

I just installed a 5 ton 16 SEER Goodman condenser with a new 80% GMVC gas furnace. I also replaced the supply plenum. Since I used to work in HVAC, I had no problems installing the equipment myself. I used Stay-Brite 8 to sweat all the copper connections and I was really happy with that product. I was really shocked when I compared our electric usage to last year. Our bill dropped to less than half what we used last summer. Originally, I was leaning towards a two stage system but some HVAC guys told me to avoid that equipment since it can be very expensive to fix if it does break. Also, I noticed that the real-world SEER ratings on the two-stage 5 ton units were not really that much better than the single stage 5 ton units. I suspect that the limit of the 4-5 ton evaporator size has something to do with that.

I had a Goodman gszh50421 installed last year when my 12 year old Carrier (installed when my home was built) went through a compressor and a blower motor. So far, so good. The only different I've seen is that my indoor humidity level is a bit higher with the Goodman. Where the Carrier would keep the house between 35-42 percent humidity, the Goodman usually has the house between 46-52. Other than that, it's been a great unit and pumped out great cold air, even in the hot Florida sun. I hired a company that's been doing installs in our area for many years, family owned, and highly recommended. I pay for their semi-annual service/mx program, and it came with a 10 year parts warranty, and for an additional 800 dollars or so, a 10 year labor warranty to go along with that, so I'm very pleased. I totally agree sir, it's all about the installer, and keeping her maintained. Great video and great advice.

This information is VERY accurate! I remember the old "Junk a troll", when Goodman took over they went from the worse to the Best. In the Houston area where it gets not just Hot, but Humid too. The Goodman are strong as a rock, and the 95 percent gas furnace is so toasty warm in the winter, with a Lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger, and a dual speed fan. WOW, Goodman is awesome and i have used for 30 years, with excellent comfort.

Its always about the qualifications and experience of the installers. "Technician" covers a broad range. I wish we had certified levels in that regard. I'm getting a new Goodman system installed from a well known and very busy HVAC company. They do make an inverter system but the HVAC guy didn't recommend it. He did recommend the 2 stage system. Goodman is also offering a $2020.00 rebate right now on their 2 stage systems. I'm getting a 10 year parts and labor warranty with the Goodman System. I'm getting a 4 ton, 2 stage, 16 seer, gas furnace and AC, communicating system with an ecobee thermostat. No heat pump for me. Hope they do a good job. They have good ratings in my area(Florida panhandle) so we will see.

Don't you need a Goodman communicating thermostat to take advantage of the Goodman communicating hardware? I avoided using the Goodman communicating feature and went with a standard programmable Honeywell thermostat. The Goodman thermostats are very expensive and if it fails, I would have to buy another expensive Goodman thermostat and you can't find them at Home Depot. If my Honeywell thermostat fails, I can replace with a thermostat purchased locally for less than $50. I don't have any experience with Ecobee but the HVAC guys on KZbin don't have a high opinion of Internet thermostats. I installed a Nest Thermostat for one of my elderly relatives after one of her neighbors talked her into buying it. She could not figure out how to use the Nest and hired an HVAC tech to install the Honeywell thermostat that I told her to buy in the first place.

There is some great commentary on the variety of equipment manufacturers. There's also components that set them apart. Trane/American Standard were the industry leader because of the Climatuf/Duration compressor. Presently, all manufacturers employ the scroll compressor which leveled the playing field. Manufacturers now need to improve efficiency in other areas. A proper installation is still vital for a lasting system life.

I worked for an HVAC Wholesaler and we sold Goodman. I used Goodman on my own homes and since 2004 haven’t had a single issue. The failures I saw had to do with bad installations and practices. Since we no longer use R22 old school contractors who don’t pay attention to drying out the refrigerant lines will have premature failures. Many failures also occur from poor airflow and wrong sizing. Although I worked for a Wholesaler I was in the HVAC trade first and stayed current on the best practices, you would be surprised how many contractors cut corners which cause most but not all premature failures.

Here in SoCal I self installed my 3 ton Goodman GSX HVAC three years ago for $4k total and very happy so far. I removed the old system and physically installed the new one and then found a local tech to do the brazing, install the TXV, vacuum and charge the system. The tricky part is finding the right tech. If you go with a big, franchise name that advertises on the radio then invariably you will be sent someone who gets a commission to sell you something that is highly marked up and you may not even need. Read all the reviews you can, especailly yelp, including their "not currently recommended" reviews. Check BBB, google their phone number, etc. My 33 year old Carrier system drew 3400 watts and the new system draws 2400 watts but, the new unit also operates a few minutes less each hour. Overall, about 40% improvement in cost/efficiency.

Built our house in Oklahoma in 2006 and installed four Goodman heat pumps, three on the house and one for my shop. Three of those units are still running today. Had to replace one of the house units about two years ago. The new unit (also Goodman) crashed about a year into it's use and practically had to be rebuilt.....new pump and reversing valve. The warranty covered the parts but I got stuck with the labor. HVAC guy told me that the newer units are not of the same quality as the older units. These units are aging and with the escalating economy and the outrageous cost of equipment, I'm really going to have to think about which route I will go as these go down. Hell, maybe go with window units as this stuff is becoming unaffordable.

Talk about a piss poor job! The reason I was having issues to begin with! Not Goodman, the HVAC outfit that installed it. As far as Goodman, the parts are easy to find, and the units are easy to work on. The installer, I have nothing good to say, and they are still in business, licensed and insured. The crap alone I discovered under the electrical tape... I will fix it myself, warranty or no warranty. If they would have done the job properly the first time... York had a very good reputation before they went to the microchannel technology. That technology could probably work OK but it's clear that York and other manufacturers did not design the coils to withstand the higher pressures used in R-410a equipment. That's what happens when the bean counters cut back on research and development budgets and new designs don't get tested properly.

Yeah i had a old GE...bought out by Tran, all I needed was a replacement motor to run the condenser fan... They wouldn't sell one to me I needed to have a HVAC license (had a friend with a license but not the point), and it was July and they wouldn't get one for 2 weeks 😳. Same problem to other places ended up buying it from Grainger, it cost a third of what everyone else was trying to charge and they even overnighted it free of charge, 2 wire set up, could not be any easier. Whatever system you get just make sure it's something that is serviceable and that you can get the common parts to fix. I promise you if it breaks down it's going to be when it's the hottest or the coldest and you should be able to get parts for those small emergency issues such as fuses, motors, flame sensors...etc. I understand that some repairs you should be licensed to... The many of them you can do yourself, it is literally not rocket science.

I'm a Trane dealer but may install some other brands including Goodman usually for apartments. Even the best installer cannot make a cheap system work better/ last longer (Though it doesn't hurt). I have Goodmans that just don't seem to want to quit and other that just seem to fall apart. Their average life here is 9-12 years which isn't good. The quality of the Trane is obvious, but even they have their problems. The weakest link in a system right now are the indoor coils leaking. And all brands are having this problem- some more than others. A by product of using R410a. We aren't saving the planet having to use more refrigerant than before or having to manufacture many more systems because they don't last 25-35 years like they used to. I started HVAC in 1974 and have seen a lot the last 48 years. Systems are more efficient, easier to repair in most cases, but not as long lived. We can make systems more complicated in order to squeeze out more efficiency but then the customer will spend all of their savings on the expensive repairs over the course of the life of the system that may only perform well for 10 years or so. An indoor PSC motor that may have cost $200 to $300 to replace is now a ECM or constant torque motor and can cost as much as $1,500 for an OEM. I could go on, but we all get the point. Enjoy your videos!

Most A/C techs will say to replace the equipment (10+ yrs), even when there is nothing wrong with the old equipment. The techs are under heavy pressure to sell equipment and it's not uncommon for them to lie to homeowners. That's why most homeowners have little trust in A/C repairmen. Only used car salesmen have a worse reputation. The Trane dealers always seem to do a quality job when installing their equipment but their equipment is overpriced in my opinion. I installed Goodman in my home but I wanted to install Rheem. I just couldn't find a 21" Rheem evaporator coil to fit in my small utility closet. All of the Rheem dealers that I called, they only stocked the 24" coil. Also, A/C techs report that the Rheem N evaporator coil is very hard to clean. My advice is to avoid the expensive, esoteric HVAC equipment. More complexity means more breakdowns and higher repair costs. Goodman makes some good equipment and their equipment is usually easy to fix and parts are available and not outrageously priced. Remember, simpler is better.

Just found out that Goodman is recalling coil drain pans for Goodman coils mounted on top of high efficiency upflow furnaces. The factory one was cheaply made and only broke one leg of power. It always chattered and even when I installed a heavy duty, higher amp rated contactor, the problem continues. I'm only an electrician but it seems like maybe the problem is the air handler circuit board not sending a steady 24v to the condenser contactor. I have to replace the contactor at least every 2 years. It always fails in the summer when utility power is low but only about 5%. Have you ever seen this before.? Otherwise, the system works great and cools evenly throughout the house.

Thank you for 'selling' me on Goodman. Onto Carrier; which the transportation industry (refrigerated trailers) uses. By the way, I bought a Mercedes because I did not want a Ford, GM, or Dodge.

I really don’t know how to respond to that. I could care less what brand car you drive or what brand heating and air unit you use

No, “Stan in a van!”, I like it! So far my unit is on its 23rd year. I’ve only had it cleaned and I’ve kept up with its maintenance. No it’s a Goodman but if/when it goes out, I’m getting a Goodman unit.

Goodman is a brand you can buy wholesale on line or at some supply houses. I had a Goodman 2 ton package heat pump bought an installed my self. Got 21 yrs out of it only part not original was a fan delay circuit board. If you want full life 20 yrs out of any HVAC system. Correct installation matching evaporator freon charge an not have thermostat set wrong in extreme temps matters for full life.

Goodman keeps prices competitive, and anyone can buy which some HVAC don't like, so when someone asks about Goodman they diss on it to keep prices high. Its like windows installers diss on big box store windows because their half price. My Goodman is 24 years old and only had the capacitor go out twice.

I'm okay with someone dissing it if they have legit concerns. I don't think Goodman is "best", but I don't think they are worst either. Not even close :-)

Interesting info. Have a 3.5 ton Lennox unit that has been decent for eight years. Also have a 20 plus year old second floor unit that needs to be replaced. The hvac owner/tech says they have had really good luck with Goodman as the parent company (Diaken) has improved quality control. When they install they rarely, if ever hear back from a customer. This company is also doing a Mitsubishi mini split for us in another area and are factory certified for each brand. Nothing fancy, single speed 3 ton unit for ac and 80% furnace. The Goodman and Lennox unit are both a little over $6k (about $300 apart the Lennox is a little more expensive). The Goodman has a better warranty with a 2 year compressor and heat exchange replacement at no cost, both have 10 years parts. From a construction standpoint and cost of future repairs, which unit is better made and less expensive to repair? Both are 14 SEER Very informative video. Thanks from Atlanta, Ga.

I would guess Goodman if you’re comparing Apples to Apples. But every market is different.

@@NewHVACGuide they're both basic systems and the Goodman is $300 plus less (5%) with a better factory full replacement of the heat exchanger or compressor for 2 years. Thanks for your input. As many have stated, a proper installation is probably a bigger factor than the difference in brands.

I had a Goodman Authorized dealer install a new Goodman heat pump to replace a 20 year old Trane SEER 10. It was way less efficient than the Trane and electric bill on average went up 20%. The compressor made a loud clank each time the unit kicked on. The first winter it stopped heating. Bad board and was not defrosting. Second year, another component went out. In the third year, loud bang and unit shuts down, compressor has a hole in the side. Warranty covers parts but labor for Goodman making a defective unit is not covered. Goodman authorized service fixed it each time and parts were free but labor and refrigerant for 3 years of repairs nearly $1600. Goodman contacted over problems and did not offer any help with an obvious defective unit from factory. Goodman servicer said he has more calls on Goodman than any other unit.

Sounds like the problem may have been the installer.

@@NewHVACGuide I don't know how two bad components and a bad compressor could be the fault of the installer. Goodman may well be a very good brand and I may have just gotten a lemon. After the compressor and two other components were replaced, it has been running for 4 years without a problem. If it was an install issue, I would still be having issues. The defrost board was a known issue with this heat pump. The Goodman service rep even told me the defrost circuit board had problems and Goodman put out a technical to replace with new part #. The compressor made a clanking noise from day 1 until it blew out. My problem is Goodman just blew me off and did not offer any assistance other than to recommend another authorized service provider, which I used the last 2 times. The Goodman service provider told me the same thing you were stating about bad installations and did a complete check of the system to make sure there were no problems with installations. He told me they contacted Goodman because he believed the compressor was a factory defect but Goodman would not cover the cost of the R410a.
