Fun story. I worked at a major cable company. They decided it would be great for parents to be able to see a summary of the rating of programs that the kids watched. 60 min G 120 Min PG13, etc. Well as part of the demo we have a VP using the system so we could collect data. They pop the data on the screen in a VERY large meeting. There it is a list of hours spent watching and 19 hours "Adult" content is at the bottom of the list. Funny thing that program never went live. We were all shocked as it was a really cool feature. Yea VW I feel your pain.

Some friends went on a hike with my wife and I this weekend on some land that is owned by a supposed research outfit. It's actually a for-profit company. The waiver required to hike the land was onerous and asked for ALL of our personal information. I lied on every bit of that form because I knew they couldn't ask for ID. I wonder how many people get spammed and worse because they gave away their personal information for free. That's just to hike on some land. They charge you to give them your personal information.

Why do you think they would only be able to track EVs? Gas cars have the same software/gps. I’ve heard this before. People saying they don’t want an EV because the government could track them or control their car as if they think the battery and motor are what would allow them to do it. All new cars are run by computers. Electric or not.

Exactly why I hate modern cars. The tracking systems are claimed to be placed in modern cars for emergency situations and theft recovery. Unfortunately it is being used for so much more. At some point the auto industry will start releasing (for sale) everything about your vehicle history much like companies have done with your phone and internet information to a meta data company. Our privacy is being completely violated and stripped away from us daily.

Almost all modern cars (20 years or less) have a Black Box device in them that records HOW you drive and what you were doing the last few minutes of every drive you do too... They are used as evidence in criminal cases, etc if, say, you evaded police and they catch up to you later. They can download your info and see how fast you were driving and how you were operating the vehicle.

The interesting thing is, since I'm using similar technologies and even the same library mentioned in the talks, in my opinion someone must have deliberately activated some features to allow this leak to happen. Per default these features aren't enabled and you have to put in some effort
