Yep, that's the scam of the class-action lawsuit. The law firm walks with $40 million and you get a car wash. The law firm gets 50% of any judgement, it's happy days for them. For the remaining amount, it gets divided between the plaintiffs. For you to get duly recouped for a dead engine, the award on the lawsuit would have to be billions, which just isn't going to happen. What ought to be law is that when vehicles come in for warranty work, they should be REQUIRED to take parts from the assembly line FIRST to honor warranty work before they make new vehicles on the line. Since your vehicle is purchased, they already have a binding contract to fix yours BEFORE they sell new ones. YOU are the priority because the manufacturer already has money from a paying customer that has priority over unsold new vehicles. If THIS law were to take place, you can be SURE that they'd be making vehicles more reliable because they wouldn't be able to assemble new ones until the sold ones were fixed and running.

GMs issue is with the Dexos oil. It is REQUIRED as it has an anti-foaming agent additive. If air pockets get introduced, the hydraulics of the AFM system get out of wack and bad things happen. My advice, as a mechanic owner of a 250k AFM LM7, don't rely on "Quick Lube" shops for oil and transmission fluid changes. 99% of these ships use cheap, non Dexos oil along with conventional ATF (not synthetic.) The answer is the same as is has been for years- do or have done an AFM delete or do your own oil changed with Castro or Mobile 1 Dexos oil. Issue to is 2014 and newer direct injection. So much pressure is on the injectors that eventually the tips blow off and bye-bye engine. Not much of a fix here other than DO NOT replace bad injectors with econony injectors. Direct Injection is not just a GM problem, it is industry wide. DI is not a new concept, just always avoided in the past because of reliability issues due to the high fuel pressure- but current vehicle emissions goals have automakers desperate for less than margional gains. The guy in this video is an obvious Toyota fan boy. I own and daily drive a 1992 Corolla around the country. Believe me when I say that Toyota is not the same Toyota that the current ingrained reputation expects. No automaker is spared. Everything has been junk since about 06'/08' and up. If you think you have engine problems, wait until you see what will be going in with transmission rebuild prices as the CRAZY 10 plus soeed transmissions start to show their age- replacement engines start sounding cheap. My advice- buy an older vehicle (pre can bus is a plus) and maintain it and it will last forever. For you salt belt people- drive down to Arkansas and buy a rust free older car and repeat the process as they rust out up north. Just don't buy a vehicle in the south shortly after a water natural disaster in the coast as they are usually half azz fixed and flipped in the mid-south states. EDIT: I know someone will reply "but GM trucks have these issues under warranty with dealer provided oil changes." That is a very SMALL percentage of all the GM trucks sold. GM sells more trucks than ALL of Ford, Dodge, and Toyota combined. Looking at a raw number is inaccurate as you need to look at the percentage much like raw crime statistics of a city vs per capita...

@@shaun4bigblocks993 Great comment, thank you! Oil quality and oil change interval are both critical on these engines. This allows the turbos to cool down after being under load. If you shut the truck down immediately after towing the oil gets burnt off of the turbo shafts and then when you start the vehicle the turbo shafts are turning on bare metal. Chemical companies like DuPont and Monsanto dumped tons and tons of PFA’s other industrial waste into rivers and aquifers. Oil companies contaminated groundwater with petroleum. Cars created way more air pollution than is acceptable. Some of their rules are asinine to be sure, but if you genuinely think the EPA does nothing good and should be abolished, then you’re just stupid. The recurring theme in this video is that these manufacturers have been pushed to do economy improvements by the EPA that make virtually all of these vehicles less reliable. A great example can be seen on a routine basis with turbo charged vehicles, let alone vehicles that prevent certain cylinders from firing. Their reliability on a linear scale timewise is dramatically lower than non-turbo vehicles. You can see this across virtually every manufacturer. The real culprit here is the EPA. Their policies and sophomoric mandates have forced us to drive less reliable vehicles, and these vehicles can leave us stranded on the side of the road or even worse with a locked up engine. It is a disgraceful act of ineptitude on EPA’s part….so let’s sue them instead of their corporate victims.

Hasn't had the AFM/lifter failure .... yet, but if you put the trans in M and shift it to M7, it disables AFM which allows the SUV to run like a 7-spd auto tranny. Since the v8 to V4 only happens occasionally under no-load throttle, usually under M8, this is an easy way to circumvent the problem and has a negligible effect on gas mileage and engine RPM lifetime totals and, hopefully, removes the 4 CYL lifter deactivation issue which is causing the sporadic engine failures. For those w/ 10 spd trans (newer than the 2015), I think the same procedure works allowing you to run in M9.

People beg me to sell it. Only thing is that it's getting the usual rust. Not terrible like others out there around that era ,but needs some body work. Only gets 13 or 14 mpg but damn does it run. So what do you guys think, fix it up or get a different one?
@Dex99SS11 күн бұрын
First off, that guy saying it's not AFM this and that, then saying it's a bad lifter... that is an AFM failure, it's the AFM / DFM lifters that fail. The saddest thing is though, that it's not JUST these vehicles that are affected by these issues... it's not JUST the L87 / 6.2L V8, it's every V8 since 2007 that has AFM/DFM, which was ALL engines by the 2014+ era... So ALL 2014+ 5.3 and 6.2 engines are truly affected by these lifter issues. Also, same exact number of vehicles are affected by the torque converter issue... again, they are only focusing on the 6.2 paired 8 spd tranny, whereas the 5.3 paired 6 spd also suffers the EXACT same converter failures as the 8 spd, just as frequently... But for some reason they don't seem to want to acknowledge that it's literally every single truck / suv sold since at least 2012/13. This all being said, these trucks can and do still make it to the 250-350k odo mile markers, though it takes far more meticulous care being given to them... Early oil changes with the called for 0w20 high grade syn oil, trans flushes and fills on target mileages, etc... Not as often as the GMT8XX era (2001-2006 GM truck / 5.3/6.0 LS era), before AFM/DoD, before VVT, before DI, before the 6 and 8 spd trannys... This was the last SOLID era that WILL make it to 300k + with fluid changes alone... then the government stepped in and forced manufactures to KEEP adding more measures to save fuel as well as reduce emissions, they are literally FORCED to employ BS measures, every model year, to the point that it's just KILLING reliability. Direct injection sucks, VVT added nothing more than allowing high compression engines run low octane fuel, not REQUIRING premium... AFM/DOD/DFM hasn't done anything to save fuel / improve mileage... anyone who's eliminated it and then observed the exact same MPG knows that much. But they're still FORCED via the government to include it, less they have to price up the truck to make up for fines placed upon them for not meeting strict epa standards. It sucks... a whole lot. But it's not entirely GM's fault, that's for sure. If it were up to them, they'd likely still be making a variant of the LSX, with sensible power improvements, and zero BS cylinder deactivation type items.

The active fuel management system nor will the dfm system cause a catastrophic failure of the bearings. This is a new feature and just the last few years and I believe it's probably an assembly line issue where the bearings are not being put together with the right bearings or they're not being assembled with the right torque specifications. Given that you're talking about 877 thousand trucks and that's only has 39 reports. My guess is that this is an occasional anomaly with the assembly procedure. For years General Motors has been putting the ring gaps on these trucks at 030 so the engines that I've had apart and put back together it's no wonder they're drinking oil. In a normally aspirated Street engine .030 is almost twice the size of cylinder Gap that should be on that set of Pistons. The active fuel management and dfm systems can cause failure of lifters. But that will not cause an inspection window to suddenly show up in the crankcase. You also fail to mention that they're also about to get a recall on those 10-speed transmissions. There's no reason for them to be on the vehicle.

My 2017 Sierra 5.3 had the exact same sound. It sounded like a sucking squeak and when a GM tech heard it immediately told me lifter failure. The truck was just out of warranty and after some discussions, GM corporate agreed to cover half the cost and in the end it cost me $3300 cdn after tax. Apparently the dealer actually replaced all the lifters with the latest updated fix. It is very disappointing to see the investigation will only go back as 2019 vehicles. Knowing what I know now, it would have cost the same to just bite the bullet and go with the AFM delete kit and cam kit from someone like Texas Speed or similar aftermarket supplier and been done with it, with a HP upgrade and better sound to boot. Lesson learned.

Putting a twin turbo V6 in a full size truck makes about as much sense as putting a semi truck engine in a train locomotive. Do the beancounters at these manufacturers know that most normal people who buy trucks still use them for pulling things? They’d rather cater to suburban dads that don’t need a truck by any means than people who own campers, trailers etc. Car manufacturers will end up either bankrupt or like Harley Davidson once was by having to compete with their own pre-owned vehicles for sales. My suggestion to these manufacturers and hopefully with the incoming Trump administration. Get rid of these useless nanny state requirements and cost cutting measures. Make cars affordable and fun again. Stop forcing EVs onto us.
