I had an Australian Shepherd who could escape my yard by climbing over my house. He would play with bricks... Sharpened his teeth with them. He could count, follow all common dog orders, plus some, and could catch any squirrel in no time flat, even at 13 years old with a limp. He could always communicate whatever he wanted or needed, and he was the most empathetic dog I've ever seen. He was the greatest dog I've ever known, and I have known some amazing dogs.

I dunno, shepherds and Border colliers are pretty smart as well. I do think it comes down to individual dogs in the end, some dogs are just smarter then others even if they are the exact same kind. All the smartest breeds do have in common that they were bred to work, not to look cute. If you either have to collect sheep or pull a sleigh it do require a bit of smarts. Or if you are a guard/police dog for that matter. If you instead bread a dog only to sit in Beverly Hills girls handbags, brains are not a requirement.

Border collies are the #1 smartest dogs!😉 but all dogs are smarter than we give them credit for imo! 🙂 I have an 8 month old border collie and she knows over 40 tricks and has a pretty wide vocabulary. She learns so fast! Definitely not for everyone, but I love how smart she is!😊

I believe dogs that think for themselves rather than mindlessly follow every command can be way smarter, but also border collies are known to be the "smartest" and that basically describes them. They can learn tons of words and commands, which is definitely cool, but I personally don't think that makes them the most intelligent. Lots of dogs are extremely intelligent, but not obedient.
