Great suggestion! I’ve been using Flexcil for PDFs, but I wasn’t thrilled by its highlighting and note taking tools. Because of iPad limitations, I couldn’t store handwritten notes and PDFs in the same folders. I just tried my first PDF import and a brief test of highlighting and annotation. It is fantastic! Now I can use one UI for pens, highlighters, scrolling, etc. I can commingle notes and PDFs in the same folders. Nirvana. Thank you (as always).

Switched from Notability to Goodnotes for this reason. Goodnotes handles big ebook pdfs much better because the bookmarks come up as outlines. Notability does not see the bookmarks and you would have to create your own tediously. I also took the plunge and got the Goodnotes app for Mac. So all my pdf books are now on Goodnotes. When I am out an about I can use them on my ipad. Any annotations and additions are synced on icloud. When I am home I pick up where I left off. (As a side note, note taking and highlighting do not improve your learning. I write questions for myself based on the text. When I am reviewing the material, I force myself to answer these questions. This method although feels difficult has the best evidence as the most effective way to learn).

PDF "editor" is PDF-7, right? One thing unfortunate in GN5 (and possibly NS2, Notability, not sure), we can't paste a URL onto a handwritten note and/or PDF document, and have it clickable. Then, we could send it to someone (good tip "Editable vs Flattened"), and they would simply click on our pasted link in the PDF reader of their choice. Very practical for a lot of people. We've done it before, but don't remember which app we used (NS2 or Notability, I guess). UPDATE: Yep, you can paste a URL on a Notability page (as text or in text box), and it is clickable in a PDF reader (or Notability).

Hi Ropsie...Lately goodnotes 5 is providing frequent updates but the experience isn’t as it was before the iPad os release...secondly, when you insert a blank page, then a page will be inserted in different size than the rest of the pages in the document...Yes inking has been improved and now it’s much better than before (but still lagging behind notability!).GoodNotes 5 must include audio and syncing of this audio with the writing as in notability...Notability is still very stable And it’s inking and audio sync capabilities, I will prefer to annotate PDFs in notability than in GoodNotes 5...On the other hand, notability must enhance its pdf annotating capabilities and thus go beyond a mere note taking app...Also It must introduce more features in it’s AWESOME audio dept like trimming of audio, renaming of the audio recordings etc...My random 💭 thoughts 😀... ✌🏼 🕊🕊
@PaperlessX5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the updates. They have dished out a lot of them lately! And I think that’s more to do with iPadOS than it does with GN5 because I have seen the pattern with several apps. Notability is very stable. Which is why on my list, with all its missing features, it still remains the number 1 note taking app for the iPad! For PDF annotation though, I feel GN5 is better especially because it handles bigger files better than Notability...

@@PaperlessX Hello Ropsie 😀... hope you are doing very well...Yes LiquidText will not be a suitable app for just taking notes...But for the sole purpose of LiquidText that is to to take notes side by side with the pdf, this superior inking tech was an essential feature...Without this, LiquidText will not have gained so much traction from the customers around the world...One thing that I really like about LiquidText inking is that during writing there is a sort of a ‘control’ so that your Apple Pencil on the glass of iPad doesn’t feel slippery and thus gives you a feeling like you are writing on the paper with the real pen...This is just like writing with the montblanc 149 fountain pen in which there is a slight tooth and so the pen doesn’t get out of control...hope you understand my point and also like my analogy 😉😃...take care 👍🏻🕊✌🏼

@_infires85434 жыл бұрын
@@sagarmodak989 After spending HOURS researching Goodnotes vs Notability, I just went and paid the few bucks for GN instead of wasting more time 😂 So to answer my own question: no, it doesn't automatically replace the file with the newest version on OneDrive. Each PDF you want to annotate has to be downloaded/imported into Goodnotes first. All annotations stay in Goodnotes only, so you have to export (full document or selected pages) them back to your cloud drive afterwards. If you want files to automatically backup to your cloud drive, you can do so but they will all be in a preselected folder on the drive (so not back in the original folder where they came from). I've only been using GN for a few hours and I didn't connect it to Google Drive, so to answer your question, I believe you also have to export it from the Drive and import it into GN first, which stays on your device, not your Drive. I might be wrong since I haven't tested all the functions yet, but I went everywhere in settings and I couldn't find a way to do what we've been talking about. I really desperately want that, so if anyone knows an app that can do it, please reply 😭 (I only know PDF Viewer that does it, but I experienced too many crashes and lost my annotations so I do not recommend it)

The outlines or TOC support in Goodnotes is a nice surprise, thank you for pointing that out. For PDF books I prefer using Documents though I might move to PDF Expert due to its dark mode and the fact it gets more updates. The reasons I prefer Readdle's apps: * It easier to navigate the TOC. Reading a book is a single hand operation. I can hold the iPad with my right hand and still use just my right thumb to click on the TOC button, expand a hierarchical entry of the collapsed table of contents and click on the entry go to the right page and swiping through pages. And the TOC is more condensed and limited to a small popup window which is, in my opinion, a better design. * Swiping through a book's pages is smoother and faster than Goodnotes, especially in scanned books. Readdle's PDF rendering engine is just better and better accelerated. * Still no support in Goodnotes 5 for alternative automated cloud backup target other than iCloud. That's a serious limitation for someone like me which the iPad is his only Apple device. If I don't have my iPad then I have no access to my notes. * Syncing notes to iCloud means the books are also being synced and that means I need to buy an extra iCloud storage if I have more than a few books. With Readdle's apps, I can use other cloud services. I can reuse my Google One storage, and also connect to a local network share which can be a remote machine on my home network accessible via VPN. Also, I don't even need to store books locally on the iPad if I don't want to as I can access the book via the cloud service without saving it locally. * As long as Goodnotes 5 does not support alternative cloud services as an automated backup target I prefer using Notability for my notes.

sustainedshnatz With respect I completely disagree. I was a huge fan of PDF Expert and really came to rely on it across all my devices for my studies. However, they decided to update their app which is now extremely unreliable (version 7). It is full of bugs, looses functionality, down grades all their pro customers who had already paid for the “pro” package and should they want to keep what they paid for they have to pay a far higher amount than it originally cost and they have to pay that every year. For their money they receive a more buggy app with an unprofessional interface (by comparison to predecessor) an only one new feature which allows you to group your favourite tools. They try to argue that there are two new features as you can now scan. I argue that for a one off payment of £5.99 you could have bought that feature (Scanner App) from them. It needn’t have cost you £50/year when the whole (less buggy and better interface) package cost around £25.99 as a one off payment. Then the fact that they forced the update (which I didn’t want) and then there is their, frankly, disgusting response which only came after ignoring me for a long period. I had bought the whole package Mac, iPad & iPhone. I relied on it for my work flow which is very important to me fir a plethora or reasons. They are updating a lot because they’re trying desperately to fix their new bloated and buggy software, they do not care about you or I. They are chasing the money 💰 It was a great app and it’s sad that greed and ignorance have taken over at Readdle inc.

@@firevr I get what you're saying but for anyone who doesn't need the premium features and only read PDF books, add an annotation here and there in the book but still uses a separate app for note-taking then the free version of PDF Expert is more than capable and also even the Documents app.
@firevr5 жыл бұрын
sustainedshnatz Yes, I agree with you on that but should you need to upgrade in the future, be mindful of their ethos. Companies offer good free versions because they know you are imparting your data & knowledge to their systems and you become somewhat reliant on their products.
@sustainedshnatz11415 жыл бұрын
@@firevr You are definitely correct but you could as that about every app company. The developers need to feed their families so if one payment model fails then they need to find another one that works. I don't think they're evil or greedy, they're just trying to figure out how to sustain their company. As a general rule I try not to be dependent on a specific app for my workflow, so I always have an alternative. This is especially important for me as my iPad is the only Apple device I own. For Documents/PDF Expert my current alternative (on iOS) is just accessing my files on Google Drive and if needed adding them manually to the Books app which somewhat acceptable.
@firevr5 жыл бұрын
@@sustainedshnatz1141 The trouble is you're right you can say they about a great number of developers these days. I don't begrudge any person or firm trying to make ends meet or to turn a profit. If Readdle's business plan wasn't working out for them, then they absolutely should change it. My issue is the method, the numbers, the lack of communication to the downright rude communication, the forcing of the update and the downgrading of a plan that I paid for. If you do the math it doesn't add up to anything less than greedy. There are other ways to go about changing models and responding to concerns from faithful customers. Their blatant disregard for neurodiversity is also an issue and sadly that is true of many other developers these days. I also try to utilise options in my workflow but sometimes a feature may be unique or having a second program is too costly. When you've paid a large price tag for a suit of software you should be able to continue to use it without having to pay for a back up application (as in a back up for the use case) However, when I can I do leave myself options but my issue is more often what works for me, what I can actually use and what I can't use.

Navigating through those in-between pages is very annoying. 😬 I dislike it with a passion!!! GoodNotes handles bigger files better than Notability. Unless if it is buggy maybe 🤔

Hi there, so what’s different in GN compared with Notability? What’s best in one or the other? Thanks.

Hey! Have so many cbz and epub files from comics and manga that I've downloaded but I don't have a good reader on the ipad. I used to use the challenger comic on the iPad. Could you please recommend a nice reader?

Can I export highlighted text in my pdfs from goodnotes to another file format? I do a lot of research and I need an app that can do this so I wouldn’t need to print mountains of pdfs like I used to before...
@PaperlessX4 жыл бұрын
What file format?
@mauvemaven4 жыл бұрын
Paperless X any format, but preferably txt or html... even pdf. I just need to extract the notes so that I can arrange them how I want them and not have to copy highlight per highlight like I do in xodo (ios) now...
@PaperlessX4 жыл бұрын
If you want to extract information from your PDFs GoodNotes is not the best app to use. Try looking into LiquidText and MarginNote

I've been having issues where the file size grows so large that it cannot be emailed. Very simple real estate documents >20pages. Any suggestions?
@PaperlessX3 жыл бұрын
Most emails only support files smaller than 25MB. GoodNotes creates huge files that is probably why it can’t be sent.
