It’s just that i don’t like when they obliged us to pay if we wanna get the new 6th version eventhough we already paid for the life-time purchase for the 5th version, especially for me who bought the 5th version just 3 months berfore the 6th version came in. If you want to use the Goodnote 5 feature and functions continuously, you don't need to pay for the GoodNote 6 subscription. You are still able to use the GoodNote 5 without limitation.

I can see why most people are upset with this decision, especially since many features that have been asked for (ex: lock a folder) have not been taken into account. I agree, I would have loved for them to release a complete app with all the updates they intend to implement, but I think maybe we should stop being so quick to judge them for theft. I have even heard some people say that GN should get sued for making its users pay again. You are free to keep using GN5. You just will not be getting support down the line, which is the case with any outdated app. You arent entitled to lifetime free updates. Although I do agree that GN6 feels a bit bare and rushed, they said that community requested features will be added and they have also been hinting at the addition of a cloud service made specifically for GN, which I am super excited about. I do not see an issue in waiting a few weeks, seeing where the updates are headed, and only then deciding to either keep GN 5 or switch to an alternative.

But they give you 100% discount for the first year of subscription, or 50% if purchased in 2023 or ~25 if purchased before. So you are eligible for the 50-100% discount for the 1st year. If you want damage control and money from the existing users before they think about switching to other apps, you need more substantial changes/expansions/features to make the AI integration useful for the average user.

As someone who primarily uses Goodnotes for reading book PDFs, I find it pretty ridiculous that an additional charge of 30 dollars is being levied for, dare I say quasi-permanent, access to an AI generation tool. It's just pretty damn convenient that there just happens to be no downgrade option on the app-despite what your support website claims. I also don't understand why the newer subscribers are provided better discounts over long-standing ones. Plus, why exactly should those who already own the Goodnotes 5 have to pay a net price of 40 dollars for a "lifetime" subscription? As much as I have enjoyed the app, this new update seems more ensnared in the web of wealth than anything else. Can we at least see who exactly you polled to determine that an AI feature was desired and what percentage of users are content with this overhaul?

@@elainefroml.a.55 sadly it isn’t an update but upgrade. Depending on what you use the app for you can prob get away with staying on 5 for quite some time. I use a lot of apps that are doing this version changes you can call it. GoodNotes just didn’t do a great job at letting people know this was happening. The other apps I use sent out emails, offered steep discounts to upgrade to the next version, and just all around way more transparent.

I don’t understand why this is called a substantial update. Generative AI has really only been here for 9 month - so I assume that is when you started work on the main feature of this version at the earliest (it was probably even after that…). Besides AI the few other things are either small changes or new ways you can extract extra money (e.g. sell Exam Practice sets). Sure the new UI symbols might seem flashy to non-tech users but this is not something that really improves the app since it looked good before and hasn’t even changed all that much in term of UX (you moved two buttons around wow). Also some of the features you are mentioning as selling points is stuff where as a developer myself I have a strong suspicion that they take one/two weeks tops to implement while you are telling us that they are main features that have to be in a new paid version of the app. I am a bit disappointed and really hope you can course correct on this. Like how did you even get the idea to release this without a discount to GoodNotes 5 buyers. I feel you are testing the waters here on how „mean“ you can be until the backlash is to high and then you course correct (e.g. discounts for GoodNotes 5 users) to try again later and I am not liking it :(

You don't have to pay for goodnotes 6. If you have bought goodnotes 5, you can stick with that. There is no compulsion to upgrade. Goodnotes 5 is still being supported. I wish people read more on the website - they have clearly mentioned this. Also goodnotes 6 have many updates planned in the next pipeline and they will give us the functionality to lock notebooks/folders.

The reason most of us chose you over Notability was the convenience of getting everything with one time payment. Now you opt out the forsake that advantage over some simple auto correction features that you try to sell as "amazing AI features". I will continue to use Good Notes 5 as long as it is still usable. But if it gets useless over time, you can be sure that I will prefer Notability over you (if I can't find other software that is as capable as these two and isn't as greedy).

(I've already emptied goodnotes trash , uodated iOS, freed up storage on ipad, switched off/on) The only thing left to do is delete and then reinstall the app but i need to back up all my data first. I just finished my 7-day trial and now it's asking me to subscribe to GN6. I just clicked top right corner settings button -> Settings -> Downgrade(on the bottom) -> Toggle off "Run Goodnotes in Version 6" -> Continue to downgrade I am back in GN5 with no problems. I am operating as I type and I have just succeeded.

I do not want or need AI-assistance, a cloud-connected account, exchange between formats, or a subscription. I am willing to pay for single version number upgrades. Version 6 of Goodnotes appears to ignore my particular demographic of users. I am an older professional working as a design engineer at a large company. I use Goodnotes for taking meeting notes, hand-written mathematical calculations, and engineering design sketches. I don't want to upload anything to the cloud or put something on a server that is not vetted by my employer. I also use it when helping my youngest kid (a junior in high school) with math and STEM classes related to chemistry and physics. I don't take class notes unless I go take a course at a profession conference. I switched to Goodnotes because Notability went subscription. Maybe it is time to go back to OneNote.
