I absolutely LOVED "The Wedding People", I found it completely surprising and unexpected and it was a lot more than what I thought it was going to be. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year. For mystery/thriller I voted for "First Lie Wins" - I gave it 5 stars, it's not for everyone but I loved it. I don't get the hype around Freida McFadden books, I find them so bad, I'm always annoyed that she keeps taking up more than one spot on these lists. I heard someone say that Freida McFadden is actually a full-time doctor so I have NO idea how she finds the time to keep crapping out these books - she's either putting no thought into them, using a ghostwriter, or writes faster than anyone on earth. "Listen for the Lie" was great (the audiobook especially - it's what got my vote in the audiobook category). "God of the Woods" was good, but it's really not a thriller and the mystery is 'eh - I viewed it more as historical fiction. The romance category is super straight for the most part, but they do seem a bit better with picking diverse authors - baby steps I guess. :/ I loved "Just for the Summer", so I voted for that. I loved "The Spellshop", I don't really think it's full on romantasy though but I still voted for it - there is a sequel coming out next year, which I'm looking forward to! I'm fully convinced that "The Ministry of Time" was self-insert fan fiction, I hated it. "Annie Bot" was great-if you haven't read it yet, I would love to see what you think of it (I don't recall it showing up in one of your videos, but I could have missed it). "The Eyes are the Best Part" was excellent (for the most part), not perfect but it was stellar for a debut and I really look forward to seeing what else she writes. I'm still mad they did away with the poetry & graphic novel categories.

I haven't read any of the nominees this year. Usually I at least have 3-4 from all the categories together. But I didn't read as many books as I did in the past, and similar to you I tried to read more books that I already owned and less new books. I had some on my TBR, and I added a few more. From the historical fiction, which I think in the past couple of years was my main genre, the two that stood out for me the most were "The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern" and "The Frozen River". The frozen river is a mystery sub genre so you might like it.

re: not a great reading year-- I think we're starting to feel the effects of the pandemic/lockdown; all the senior staff who left and didn't come back. some of their stuff they worked on was still being published in late 2022, early 2023, but now we're pretty solidly out the other side re: nonfictions-- It's Not Hysteria currently has my vote! Just finished The God of the Woods this week. I did love Long Bright River, but agree with your take that it was more family drama. God of the Woods has similar vibes, but much more mystery. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. There are a lot of characters and the timeline jumps around, so give it a few chapters to settle in. It does, I promise! I read on audio and think print might be better to follow timelines.

Re: family experiment (John Marrs) I really liked it, it i definitely think you need to read The One, Passenegers & the Marriage Act prior to reading Family. (I think you’ve read the first 2?) John won’t call them a series but he has a tendency to spoil pieces of the. Previous books in each installment. The minders also comes between passengers and marriage act but it’s the most “stand alone” of the set and also the worst of the 5 in this universe.

I just got A Sorceress Comes to Call on libby and I am quite excited to get to it. I have a physical library copy of The Familiar good to go, too - I predict that it may win honestly because of name recognition. I liked Academy for Liars a lot, but it still doesn't feel like a winner. I liked Emily Wilde's second book but I totally agree that the fantasy section this year is a little underwhelming. Decent books but nothing HUGE. I honestly dont know what I'm going to vote for in anything except Lit Fic.

I have read a decent amount of newly released books this year, but I haven't read a lot of the nominees. I have heard of some of them, but they didn't interest me enough to add them to my TBR. An Academy for Liars is on my TBR. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it, once you've read it. My top three 2024 releases are: Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White (only read the first paragraph of the Goodreads synopsis, the rest contains spoilers!). I think you might enjoy this author but I would start with The Spirit Bares Its Teeth. The Sins On Their Bones by Laura R. Samotin. I think this could also work for you. Trigger warning for grooming & DV. I think these topics are handled well in the book, but I get it if you don't want to read about that. Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White by Amélie Wen Zhao (finale of a YA Fantasy Duology). I don't read a lot of YA anymore, but I really enjoyed this duology. It has a lot of typical YA tropes, but I think they worked in the context of the story and I enjoyed the themes of power, corruption and balance. Parts of it reminded me of the Poppy War.

@kathleenbrashier2579Ай бұрын
I like The Familiar, but it is quite different from her other books. It feels much more like "100 Years of Solitude," or "Shadow of the Wind" to me. Wedding People was good! Hopefully, this isn't spoilers since I'm just talking about the overall feel of the book, but just in case: SPOILERS The prose has an interesting feel to it, like the stunned blankness you have after major upheavals in your life, where you almost can't react to anything with emotions at all. Then, the story makes slow moves towards finding your baseline in your new life. So, if that sounds like something you'd be into, I recommend it. 😁

Question for everyone: Do any of you use a physical journal to track your reading? If so, any recommendations? As for Goodreads, I wish there were more categories. Like, a Women's Lit (fiction about women, by women, for women), Queer Romance, Graphic Novels, Translations... and I wish History & Biography had separate categories. I love that they added audiobooks... but I feel like a best narrator category would be better LoL and I guess my suggestion for Translations is more about praising the translator than the actual author... but the point stands.

They remove more and more categories as time goes on sadly.. there used to be graphic novels category, middle grade, science and technology.. it’s very bland now
@bluegreen5377Ай бұрын
@@emryborge7027 I still have my pet conspiracy theory that they removed middle-grade because last or second to last year of the category existing there was quite a stir online about Riordan winning again. It lead to Riordan making a statement on twitter about not wanting to be nominated anymore.

I use a physical journal but I make it myself, I never found anything that suited my needs (and I still change my mind about what I want to track so I add and remove spreads from it). I think Clockwork Reader was selling decent one a couple of years ago but I don't know if it's still available. If you just want to write reviews or lists, I think any generic one will be okay or even just a notebook.
