I just want to say thanks for everything you do. My husband, my pregnant self and our four children sold our home in October, moved into a camper and finally bought our property two days ago! Jeremy, as a note, the next time you stack your bales of hay, place the bales on the bottom row on their side. This lets air circulate under your stack, keeping any mold from growing and ruining bales. The house looks locked together gorgeous, Melissa!

I totally second this and also add a couple rows of palettes to get air circulation on the bottom or else you might lose that entire bottom row?

Yes I also heard about this because the hay stacks can become very hot and combust. You have to check all the time the temperature inside the the stacks. I got my 🤞everything will be perfect.
@JosieB20172 жыл бұрын
I agree with putting the bottom layer on end with small spaces for air flow. Also our summers are high humidity so a trick I learned was to throw rock salt pellets between every layer you stack. This will draw moisture from your bales and our horses enjoy crunching on the pellets like they’re treats

Oh my goodness ! This took me back in time. Back 50 years. I was born and raised on a 1000 acre working cattle farm. Cutting the hay and straw, bailing it and then the great load it on the trailers and put it in the barn. We put up alfalfa so we had several cuttings each year. Of course we had the wheat harvest and putting up the straw. I spent many a happy but tiresome day with my Daddy and the neighbor boys that always came to help. Our reward was getting to go to our little nearby lake for a swim to cool off and clean off. Happy memories from back when life was better. Love seeing your family come together to work hard and play at the beach. Love how your home is coming together!! Love, hugs and prayers from a Kansas Grandma ❤️

Wonderful video from the day at the beach to the family gathering feed for the winter for the horses. You and Jeremy are building literally blocks of family love every day....this is the way life should be. But it takes a mother and a father who have had a good family life themselves to know the difference between FAMILY and going through the motions in life while raising pesty kids. Your children are the jewels in your crown, lucky kids. Loving family...what a rare sight that is. This made my day~ thank you!!

How a day is planned out can change in a heartbeat. I remember 1975) all too well. My parents built our home and garage (with a little help from friends when needed) Then in 1976, the Mini farm was built. With a log cabin barn. The kind of log cabin you cut down trees, remove the bark and cut the notches out of the logs. On the farm, we had 1 horse, 1 pony, and 1 bull. 2 goats, chickens, and ducks. During that time of building, I couldn't tell you how many planned-out days got changed My brother and I and friend always would find the time to play baseball and when everyone's parents would come walking down the driveway, That was when we would slowly turn our baseball hats around because it was on! My skinny little 12-year-old Girl's arms hit many homes runs! They were the best plan-changing days that will stay with my brother, our friends, and me forever.❤

We didn't moan or complain, for whatever reason we loved it and I actually miss our "hay" days. The best part of the day, was the end, we were tired from a productive day of hard work and our Gram rewarded us with homemade ice cream. Lots of hard work! We had to get our hay off the field this week too. Please rent, buy, or borrow a moisture/thermometer probe for the hay. One hot bale can burn your shop down. So please be careful, but having it in the shop will certainly prevent hay loss from tarp issues. Just take that extra precaution to sleep better at night.:) Stacking it in an interlocking fashion can help prevent the stack from falling over and the potential for someone getting hurt...because you know the kids are going to want to play on the stack. (Speaking from experience as a kid and parent lol). Things are looking amazing!

I was about 6 or 7 and I drove the truck while my dad, two older sisters and an older brother picked up and stacked the bales. I am again so proud of you, Jeremy and Melissa. I was thinking just weather seal it and leave it natural. Reason is painted cement has to be repainted every few years depending on how often it gets scratched and scraped. Maybe wait to paint it if it ever gets a lot of stains from whatever and you want to cover up those unsightly stains. Because eventually, no matter the quality of the paint, it will start chipping off.

As a previous dairy farmer, nothing is like making hay, our oldest son was in the haymow(hayloft) our middle son was driving the tractor and hay wagon, then unload onto the elevator into the barn and hubby and I were taking turns on the wagon/tractor. With 60 head of cows to feed, it was nothing to see a 10,000 bales of hay in the summer. Our kids were tremendous help and are all hard workers to this day. Well done!

I am going to jump on a train to Edinburgh tomorrow morning to spend a few hours going round the city I live in County Durham so it's round about 2 hours away from here then in a few weeks I will be in uddingston near Glasgow to pick my daughter and grand children up to come here and stay for a week so looking forward to seeing them . It looks like one of them might be on the autistic spectrum I have a 23 year old with autism and it's a joy we get a good laugh with him he is great at mimicking he is also great at maths sometimes when he loses it it can be bad but he is a blessing as well sorry for the rant but it's great to see everyone working together and so happy that's what it's all about

You bring back so many memories for me with each episode. The summer I turned 12 yrs old, I helped my grandfather doing the haying on his dairy farm. It was one of the best summers of my entire life. The other great times was helping building my parents house. Thanks for the memories. 🙂

Melissa, your commentary at the end of your videos, seems to always make me cry, but the Love and kindness that you show your family is just amazing to me, and the powerful love that your family shows you back, has to be the most cherished experience of your life. Your Family is just Amazing, but it also shows what love and compassion teaches young ones in life. You must be so proud of your children and how they live their lives, and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives. Bible says....Bring up a child in the way they should go, and they will never depart from it. Love you all from Brian in Mesa, Arizona.

The beach looks amazing Melissa, family time is so precious, it’s great that you grow your own hay it’s so expensive at the moment so every bale is important, storing it in your big barn is a great idea for now until you’ve built a barn for it, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧

I SO look forward to your videos ... they are terrific! My back, legs and arms hurt from watching you all lift and stack that hay, lol. I don't know all the families on KZbin, but I can't imagine another family coming even close to as much fun to watch as you all are. Just awesome!

Bucking hay is soooo much fun! We just got our last in the barn last night! We had 66 degrees the morning we started putting most of ours in the barn! An absolute miracle that has never happened in 16 years! There is such a huge relief that comes over you when the hay is in the barn! The animals will have food over the winter! Something checked off the list! Great job you all and I think you have a new tractor driver as well!!! Hay time is a good time!! Now let it rain!!!!!

I worked one Summer as a teen helping local farmers get in their hay. Even with a mechanical arm that tossed the hay bails on the trailer for us it was really hot, difficult work. I can’t imagine having to pick up each and every one of them by hand. Well done family, well done!❤

You are true homesteaders now. I love you you keep promises to your kids no matter whether your work plans are done on time. And when you have something too big to do on your own, the kids all work together to help get it all done. And, of course, you ALWAYS make me cry at the end of EVERY video. Luv you guys!

My first grandchild started driving the hay truck when he was 4 years old. His dad would put it in granny gear and all he had to do was keep it straight. He still drives the truck but now (10 years later), he does all the gears. This brought back such good memories.

Have you considered stacking the hay on pallets and moving them with the tractor? If you could source enough pallets you would only have to load them once, store them in the barn and then when you get the hay barn built move them to it with the tractor. I understand the amount of work you four did that day, we would help a friend do custom bailing and would be paid in hay. Mom and Dad were gone and I had to load the hay, take it to our barn and stack it. The last load, at about 9pm I put 60 bales (2 ton) on our one ton truck as I was NOT going to make another trip. The truck got parked in the barn that night and I unloaded it in the morning. Since then, I've learned to work smarter when ever I can, not harder. We love how the two young adults helped pull this one off. Also that everyone pitches in when needed and they are able to. You have a wonderful family and we are glad that you take time for each other whenever you can, time and precious moments pass all to quickly.

Once he's used to the tractor, you aren't going to get him off. Tractors make work fun. My condolences to Jeremy's back. That was hard work. A platform on the forks would allow runs from the field and put them high on the pile. Take it from a 70 year old with back problems, you can use the loader to make life a lot easier. Good job on getting that all in. Good Luck, Rick
