I think you should leave those Items from Good Will for the people who need it. There are lots of us who really can't afford to buy much. Its a shame that you have to make money that way.
@SuzanneAWells

Hi Sigrid, I don't think you understand what is going on here and you are grossly misinformed about the purpose of Goodwill stores. First of all, there are so many Goodwill stores across the USA and they are crammed with so much inventory - I am not taking anything from anyone. There is more than enough to go around. Second, eBay and reselling keeps many people off public assistance because it gives them a way to make money from home. With my teaching, I have helped people get off public assistance and create thriving home businesses. Many sellers have lost a job, are disabled, are caregivers, have health issues, or other reasons they cannot hold a real job. eBay gives them a way to make money from home and Goodwill stores have more than enough inventory to support our chosen career path of reselling. I think you need to change your mindset. There is no possible way eBay resellers are taking anything from anyone. We live in a country of abundance and shameful waste. eBay sellers are rehoming unwanted items, keeping things out of the landfill, creating flexible profitable home businesses - it is all good. Furthermore, Goodwill's mission is "works to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work." Goodwill does not exist to provide things for the financially disadvantaged. The thrift stores raise money for their mission, which is work programs. As many thrift stores exist to generate income for the charity's mission - whether it is disabled veterans, the kidney fund, a church - whatever the mission may be. I hope I have educated you about the reselling cycle and the fact that eBay sellers are not taking anything from anyone.

Hi Sigrid, I use the money I make from thrifting to support my family, without it I would not be able to "afford much". It's my second job. The Goodwill, say what you want about it, puts people to work who might not otherwise be able to get a job. I see this firsthand in the warehouse where I pick up auction items. Many of the people who load items in my car are disabled, and I imagine might not be able to work anywhere else. To me, they are people in need who get the opportunity to work from people like me supporting the stores. Also, the stores where I live are jammed to the walls with product, I hardly think stores will run out of items anytime soon.

Hello Sigrid, I am an online reseller thanks to the large amount of help I have received from the videos Suzanne Wells posts. The insane amount of consumerism in this country means that thrift stores are busting at the seams with goods so no one is truly doing without. I am extremely choosey with what I buy and resell so for every item I buy, there are hundreds left there for the next person. Reselling supplements my husband's income, otherwsie, I could easily be in the club of the "people who really can't afford to buy much." I do not, for one second, think of what I do as taking from the needy when in fact, it is helping me to not BE the needy. The fact that you don't see the opportunity that Suzanne is sharing is the real shame. Get rid of the victim mentality... It's not a cute look.

Something else to consider is that Goodwill has SO MUCH STUFF that they wont possibly sell it all. They end up taking so much of it to the dump. I intentionally buy items that are on their last round at goodwill (the day their colored tags are the cheapest). Often they are sent to the bins or the dump after that. This is an important thing to do in today's day and age when people throw away too much. It allows this item to be used a little while longer. Also, not everyone is able to make it to Goodwill, but they can shop on ebay. Or they arent able to find their harder-to-find shoe size/style, but again, they can find it on ebay. Resellers take an item that likely wont otherwise sell and present it to a whole new audience, giving the item a second chance at life, reducing consumption of raw materials, and providing an easier shopping experience for those who are disabled or who live too far away from a goodwill to search themselves.

I see where you are coming from, I used to feel the same, however, here are a few reasons I now disagree...1. Most of the items we buy to resell are unique and not the same items that the average person who shops for themselves is looking for at a thrift store. 2. Thrift store items are often not inexpensive 3. Most frugal shoppers just shop at walmart or dollar tree for most personal or household items anyway including myself 4. Private thrift stores may not do this as often, but goodwill regularly clears out it's old inventory to make room for new, some of the donations dont actually even make it inside the store before they are taken to the outlet or landfill, there is plenty for everyone

I have the Mr. Rogers my in my store!!! Pool noodles are great for packing mugs!! Just cut to the size of the handle,(the most vulnerable part of the mug) cut a slit down the middle, and slip it over the handle. Wrap the mug with plastic wrap, a sheet of bubble wrap and wrapping paper. I also like to line the box with wrapping paper. I guarantee your mug will arrive undamaged. Buyers also seem to appreciate the effort.

Yep, I have shipping mugs conquered! It is just a matter of not WANTING to ship breakables, rather than not KNOWING HOW. In my ebay career I have shipped lamps, paintings, vacuum cleaners, sets of dishes and crystal, antique vases - I just don't enjoy the packing process very much, but I will get over it!

I'd love to see an update video! I'm curious about which items sold and how much they went for. Some of the prices that you plan to list the items for do seem very high, but that's likely because I am such a frequent Goodwill shopper. I've never thought about buying things to sell from there, but you just may have inspired me. :)

Thank you so much for the good info. I am a senior and have a storage unit and attic and my office is packed , so I was stressing because I can't seem to get my head around all this. I have been in the process of listing what I can to donate it, but with my husband out of work, I think I will try to sell instead. So now watching your videos has given me confidence to tackle it and see what I can do with it all.

Your videos are so helpful, thank you. I was watching one a day or two ago and someone sold an insulin pump. I am a diabetic, and that got me to thinking that I have a surplus of supplies that I could sell. I listed 4 boxes of infusion sets for a Medtronic pump that don’t work with my new pump. I listed them last night and took a best offer of $85 within an hour. Who would of thought! Keep the inspiration coming.

I do not donate to Goodwill and haven’t for years. When my kids were little and I couldn’t afford to buy them nice clothes I went to Goodwill. Many of the children’s clothes were stained and the prices were ridiculously high. I realized Goodwill was not selling to help those in lower incomes but to make money.

I also sell on eBay. I appreciate you showing items you purchased for resell, along with your pricing point. I usually get my items at yard sales. I often find nice items in my own neighborhood or the surrounding ones, and the prices are super low. I haven’t had much luck at thrift stores. Where I live in California, the nicer higher end thrift stores are so overpriced or the majority of the stores I’d never find the items you did. Especially Pottery Barn brands. Curious what city and state you live in. By the way, you have a great eye for items. Good job!

How many of your items sell on ebay at the prices you mentioned in this video? I have sold things on ebay a few years ago but never got the mark up you mention. My hat's off to you if you are successful. Do you list as buy it now or auctions? I've had 2 fabulous sales on auctions but most were $5-$10 sales. I would love to follow in your footsteps. You're so lucky to be in an area where you can buy low and sell high! Here in the NW there's a ton of competition in thrift-flipping and the Goodwills price stuff at $7 and above. Skirts for $13. Coats for $25. Not a ton of margin to make a living from! Thank you so much for sharing, though! Like your perspective and choices.

Everyone can do this, its educating yourself on how. If you're reading this, you have access to the internet. When you have a few extra bucks, invest it into something someone may want or need. Start small and build yourself up. Some shipping companies will pickup from your home, so you don't need to go anywhere to ship. So if you're saying that you don't have the money for something, do something about it. Just a thought.

Hi Suzanne! I loved your video and have recently started watching a lot of your stuff. I work for a non profit in my community at the local food bank and we have a thrift store as well. I have asked the board to approve me running an ebay store for the company....approved! So my ebay store was finally up and fully operational on the 2nd of Feb this year and I am struggling with listing as auction or buy it now pricing. Everything I have to put on the store is 100% profit because all of our goods are donated to us through various outlets in our community, so I am tending to list fairly low and still have only had 5 sales. Any advice for a new store owner in the ebay community? Greatly appreciated and thank you so much for all you do to help us all achieve success!

Kelly Miller you may know this already but you can set up an ebay account for a nonprofit where there are no final value fees. Either the nonprofit can set up an acct for itself or you could work thru ebay to temporarily "designate" your acct for the nonprofit. During that time, you could not sell your own items thru the acct, all sales would have to be for the nonprofit.

Thank you for sharing these items! I think plates would be less scary to ship for me than mugs... only because their isn't a handle on it that could break! Do you think finding $25 at minimum is a good place to start? I'm trying to up my ebay game because selling $10 every 2 weeks isn't going to do much in the long run... because if I sold 4 $25 items that would be $100! And in my area it's kind of rare to find $100 items all the time.. anyway thank you for these videos Suzanne. I hope Q1 is going well for you too :)

Hey this is a great video. On shipping breakables especially things that are worth a lot of money I have had success in going to UPS and having them give me a quote because they’ll provide all the shipping materials and most people that want to buy high-end are used to paying a good amount of money to make sure the Brickels make it with no problem for example I sold a vintage Waterford bowl that was extremely heavy and someone ponied up $25 for UPS to ship it and guarantee that it would get there without Breaking

Thanks for the tip! I think my aversion to shipping breakables goes back to my early days of eBay. My mom had hip surgery and moved in with me for a couple of years, and we worked on downsizing her things. As she said, "You will have to do this some day so we should start now." She had a lot of China, figurines, collectibles. I shipped paintings, a vacuum cleaner, lamps. So I think I burned out on shipping those kinds of things and it stuck with me. I am really working on myself to get over it!

Thanks Debra - BTW, my mom said to some knock on her door and introduce yourself! If they are outside it is usually on the screened porch where nobody can see them. She would love to meet her neighbor! Don't be shy....you will probably end up over there for a while having coffee and pastries...LOL

Curious - why tell how much YOU paid for it? Do you think eBay shoppers don't look at KZbin?
@SuzanneAWells
@SuzanneAWells 6 жыл бұрын
Why not? Reselling is as old as mankind. If I can help others learn to do this and make money, everyone wins. I do not care if eBay shoppers look at KZbin, in fact I hope they do. If I find something for $3 that someone really wants, and they pay me $50, that it their choice. No one is forcing them to by an ashtray or handbag. They want to. This is business. The world knows that people are shopping thrift stores and garage sales and reselling - this is no big secret. If I have something someone else wants, I can set the price. It is simple economics.

@@jackiekoreen6883 Exactly, Jackie! Say I am in the market for vintage handbags to buy. I can see thousands of them on Ebay - and gladly pay for the "service" of the sellers who go to the hundreds of thrift store to find and post the items.

Movie/TV tie-ins can really help an item sell. I once sold a vintage 60s jumpsuit - it was a wildly psychedelic print - by tying it in to the old TV show called Laugh-In. (By "tie-in" I mean including the name of the show in your Ebay title.) The buyer sent me a pic of her teen daughter wearing the item for a stage show based on Laugh-In. What fun!

Your videos are very helpful. Just one question: why do you pay sales tax? As a reseller can't you be exempt?
@SuzanneAWells
@SuzanneAWells 6 жыл бұрын
Because it is too much of a hassle - I tried it. The cashiers don't know what do to, they have to call a manager, who sometimes doesn't know what to do. So check out ended up taking 20-30 minutes longer to save like $5. My time is more valuable than that, so I just pay sales tax and move along.

No, it is not necessary to have a store to get maximum sales. A store is simply the way eBay bills you for items. However there are benefits: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH2bfH6jmsSCarM

How long do your items sit without selling? I see a lot of these items still for sale. Just curious. Thanks for your videos!
@SuzanneAWells
@SuzanneAWells 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Miriam, I really don't like that phrase "sit without selling." I wait for the right buyer. Sometimes it takes 18-24 months. eBay is a marathon, not a sprint. These things take time. You have to be patient. The flip side is that I am selling things today that I listed 18 months ago, so once you get a pipeline going it all works out.
