The Goodwood Breakfast Club is a no-cost, all-welcome motoring show where the visitors and their machines are the stars of the show.
Goodwood's description for this event was as follows: Our traditional midsummer celebration of all things pre-tax returns for another year featuring cars and bikes that were registered before January 1 1984. As time moves on, this event only gets more and more interesting. We can now welcome cars ranging from the classic line of the Jaguar E-type to working-class heroes like the Renault 5 Turbo.

The Stanley Steam car was great and very quiet even when moving! The Skoda was also very nice and well looked after. A good variety of vehicles there and well worth your long drive down from Yorkshire Steph so thanks for taking us with you and showing us around. 👍👍

Great to actually see a Stanley Steamer start up and drive off chugging along like a steam locomotive, Steph. My maternal grandfather was a boilermaker who built the boiler on the iconic 3801 steam locomotive in Australia (3801 designated the first steam locomotive produced in 1938). It pulled the famous Sydney to Newcastle Flyer for more than thirty years. You were right to say steam locomotive enthusiasts would like to see the Stanley Steamer.

Loved the Stanley! My only close encounter with steam cars was in Sun Valley, Idaho. My boss Helen, and I had finished installing some storefront signs, and as we were loading up the truck these glamorous old cars slid by, noiselessly. I said "those were Doble steam cars." She said "get in" and we chased them down to where they were stopping. Anybody who loves steam, do yourself a favor and research Doble. They invented a preheat steam process that got the car ready to drive in a couple of minutes, a vast improvement. Abner Doble purportedly started consulting with Dr. Alex Moulton build him a personal car, but it wasn't built. Imagine a steam car with hydrolastic suspension. That would rock you right to sleep, with the gentle hissing and the hydrolastic "cushion". LOL

You are looking spectacular, Steph. What a show to be able to attend. I'm with you at that Plymouth Fury, and had to comment. It is a 68 Fury II, which was the slightly upmarket trim. The base Fury I was the model that offered the Police Package. Fury I had plain vinyl seats and rubber floor mats. Most were sold as police or taxi fleet cars. This Fury II is a much nicer car. It is also fairly rare in that it has factory installed air conditioning, an expensive option when new. A lot of people stepped up that bit more and got the Fury III, which competed with Chevrolet Impala and Ford Galaxie 500. Top of the luxury heap was the VIP, which really was lovely. There was also a Sport Fury. Needless to say, car salesmen (all men at the time) had to have their wits about them. That 58 Edsel is another rarity. It is one of the lower lines that used the Ford body shell. The two upper lines used the Mercury shell with Edsel trim. You might be surprised at how easy it is to maintain the big North American cars. For the most part, any made after 73 will have electronic ignition, and ones from before that are very easy to convert inexpensively. If you are only doing a few thousand miles a year, one or two oil changes with chassis lube will take care of them. Maybe every 5 years or so, a minor tune up. The big thing is to drive them. They really do not like to sit. There are upgrades that can make them very economical on the Motorways, too. In my 5.8 litre Mercury Grand Marquis I saw 40 mpg on the open road. It was also rated for 3 tons of trailer! I would dearly love to attend. Who knows, maybe one day I will be across the Pond and able to attend. Of the lot, I think my favourite was that cream and dark red Wolseley Farina. I almost had a 67 Austin A60 Cambridge, but I was too late. Rot and destroyed it. I've always had a soft spot for them. Lovely looking and beautifully trimmed, elegant cars. I can't help but think that a Ford Fiesta 2 litre engine would certainly wake it up, though, so it could deal with our roads and distances.

A small road going steam engine with much the same start up procedure as a full sized loco I should think. A great variety of everything else too. Many many years ago I got a gold seal engine put in my first car. I was in the process of dismantling the old one, had found out what was required, and it was cheaper to get a new engine than replace the required parts! Ran it in on a trip from Glasgow to York and back, getting probably the best mpg it ever got with the restricted speed! Cheers

I thought something at Goodwood might be a bit snobby. Obligatory E type Jag. or Aston Martin. Seems I’m totally wrong which is great. What a mix of machines. Loved hearing the Stanley steamer take off. I wonder how many MPG he gets and what the range would be. 🤔 At least he can recharge at home….from the garden tap.😄 The idea of running a car on water seems very attractive. It was good to see the Gold BMW e23. I have one and Hubnut did a video on it when he came to Tasmania. Not many left, you rarely see one now. Great video Steph.

Hello Steph, It used to take me 10 hours to drive from Dunfermline to Pagham to visit Dad at a steady 70mph. 497 miles from my door to his door . Pagham is a few minutes from Goodwood. I can't imagine driving for 10 hours at running in speed.. I never went to any shows at Goodwood while visiting and I know the opportunity has now passed. We have very few big shows up here. Lathalmond is usually good depending on the Scottish weather. Ingilston is pricey. I have turned into a"bah humbug"and hate driving in today's inconsiderate and aggressive traffic. Your site is therefore my view of classics. Thankyou.

Hi Steph. Looks a good show. Have you checked out the Felixstowe run? About 400 cars plus buses and lorries do a road run from Ipswich to Felixstowe sea front on the first Sunday in May each year. A great day out. I used to enter with various cars when we lived in East Anglia. Definitely worth going!

14:22 I nearly fell off my chair when you went past that, thought it was the 288 GTO (because it has the horizontal lines on the bonnet) then saw it doesn't have the same lights at the front. That is the later 308 Quattrovalvole from 1982 onwards. This Ferrari you went past sells for under £100,000. If it was a 288 GTO... then you're talking £3.5 Million. It's crazy how similar they are yet one is worth 35 times more. Would someone really take a £3.5 Million car to one of these shows? I jumped the gun. 😂

12:05 - You can see why steam cars used to frighten the horses: whooosh!😲 The French title of chauffeur ('stoker') was never more appropriate than in the early days of motoring; a key part of a steam-carriage driver's job was quite literally to light the fire and feed the boiler. As Lady Penelope [Thunderbirds] might have said: "Full steam ahead, Parker..."
