Incredible Mini v Lotus track battle at Goodwood

The cars of the Goodwood Revival's Fordwater Trophy in 2019 might have been quite small, but that did not mean that the action was any less exciting than the big GT cars racing in the RAC TT. The highlight of this awesome race was this amazing battle between a Mini Marcos - in the hands of Goodwood legend Nick Swift - and a Lotus Elan - raced by Robert Barrie. It's not often that a Lotus Elan looks like the big-engined brute, but being pitched against the little Mini Marcos does just that. As the Mini catches through the corners, the extra power of the Lotus pays down the straights. Can Swift find a way through?

I had the fortune to have 2 races this close with this amount of respect, the "downside" was that it was virtual racing only, never the less loved it just like this. Oh and btw it was againts the same guy, we each had a "win" respectively.

That's an unusual one. Well, they're all unusual, but your standard Marcos were a little bigger. And I think they had plywood floors!

They raced in the 1966 Le Mans and placed 15th (that was the first one won by the Ford GT40). It's basically a mini in a fiberglass body which could get up to 141mph down the Mulsane straight.

Their heritage is all Lotus will have left when they go EV. Nothing they build now truly reflects the historic principles of Colin Chapman, so the marque is dead to me.

Always a pleasure to watch a good dice between good drivers who know where the corners of their cars are, and who never feel the need to biff and barge when good driving will suffice. And why do we need to watch the rich boys in their V8s when this sort of spectacle is available? Driving beats dollars every time.

Thats a nice red colour on the number 48 Lotus Elite. I used to own an Elite after my father died. A nice blue Elite, it looked great in the Hawaiian sunlight my older sister in Seattle owns it now. I owned it for about a year. Fabulous little car.

I once saw a race where it was the other way around, Elans vs. Corvettes. The Corvettes where blasting away at the straights, but the Elans where always catching them in the corners.

You are thinking of the Marcos GT, plywood chassis and fibreglass body from the 1960's. From approx 1970 they switched to tubular steel chassis as the plywood expensive to fabricate. Jackie Stewart raced a Marcos early in his racing career. See more on Marcos website.

Mini Marcos - possibly the ugliest mini based kit car, but vert light and great fun to drive! I drove one in early the 80's, with a 1380cc motor, it was very quick compared to the cars of that era. I would have loved an Elan but couldn't afford one.
