We don't claim to know it all, but we have learned a lot about using tractors over the years. And one thing that intimidates a lot of new tractor owners is hydraulics. So today we'll cover ten things about hydraulics that should increase your confidence in understanding just what's on your tractor, and maybe what you should get if it's not there.

Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

Great video Courtney! The ones on the Kubota are Faster (brand) couplers. For the pressure buildup problem with grapples, etc., I simply bought another set of male/female couplers and put a tiny ball valve on the other end. Plug them on the implement hoses and simply crack the ball valves to relieve any pressure buildup.

I needed this episode. The hydraulics on my tractor always confuse me. I read the chapter about it in the manual and it feels like it’s written in a completely different language. This vid was a huge help in me gaining a little more understanding about something so crucial to tractors and operating them. Edit: I know this is your job, but your videos are very informative and have the ability to make sense to the most novice of tractor users (me, lol). Your hard work and dedication will see this company soar. Keep up the Good Works Courtney. 👍👍

The couplers on your Kuboda are pioneer style with a double action collar, mounted in a breakaway configuration. The double action collar can be moved in either direction to get the retaining balls to disengage. In a breakaway configuration the collar is clamped (or is a housing) so the coupler moves instead of the collar. This is pretty common setup on larger tractors and has been around for decades. My 1973 Allis Chalmers 200 (original owner) came with these.

Great video and really appreciate the info. I have a TYM 394 with a backhoe and both backhoe hoses have male fittings. I connected the backhoe and turned on the valve but nothing worked. I swapped the hoses and that fixed the issue. So, for some tractors / attachments, the direction of fluid flow matters!

If you park an attachment in the winter and try to hook it up in middle of summer the pressure may build up with the temperature change.

Great Video. I drove hydraulic lift high cube commodity trailers for 14 years. The change in temperature would cause the hoses to pressurize. We used a block of wood and a hammer to release the pressure. We had 1” pioneer fittings.

Upgraded my 2014 1025R with power beyond, an electric 3 spool rear remote from Summit. Have a top link on one spool, wrapping the loose hydraulic lines with the hose wraps to prevent any chaffing. Going to add a tilt link on the second spool. And the third spool I'd like to rig something up to lift the 60" belly mower which is the challenge.

Turning off the tractor and relieving the pressure is absolutely a good idea, but it might not prevent over pressure if you relieve the pressure when it's cold and try to connect when the weather has warmed up, or even gone from morning to afternoon temperatures. Hydraulic fluid isn't compressible in any practical sense, so when it expands due to heat it expands the hoses which are a really stiff spring. The pressure relieves quickly, but it can still be a problem even if it's just thermal expansion. IMO: A wrench is the best way to relieve it because it's more controlled.

Great video. I need to get me some of those hose wraps. As for your large orange machine couplers, Deere has the similar style couplers on their larger 5 series machines. I call it a push/pull style coupler, I am sure there is a fancy marketing name for it. That 5115M you sold me a couple years ago has that same style coupler. Glad to hear it was just a plugged filter on the 4720.

My 3520 has a relief valve on the 3rd function box. Clockwise for pressure, counter clockwise pass through, no resistance pressure for running a backhoe where the backhoe controls regulate pressure. Turn the valve counter clockwise to relieve all pressure when hooking the grapple up and hook the grapple lines together when dropping while there’s no pressure.

Perhaps i missed it, but you also want to relieve the pressure on your 3rd function. Once the tractor is off, you need to move the third function rocker switch back and forth before unplugging your lines.
@edwinschwartz2472
@edwinschwartz2472 Жыл бұрын
Check to see if the third function valve is electric and if the key has to be on to use it. If the valve is keyed, you have to turn the key back on after you stop the engine, then rotate the joystick to release the pressure to the valve and the hoses.

If you have a 3rd function or electric diverter, you need the tractor but the key on, to let the pressure off of the lines.

As a farmer I actually hate the quick connect ag couplers(the ones with no collar) on big tractors because they get worn out and like to pop out. It's very frustrating having to climb down out of the cab amd go plug the hydraulics back in so you can fold your tillage implement, etc.

I have the flat face couplers on my sawmill and love them. Though I still carry a clean rag to wipe them off, Dad always taught us to wipe off hydraulic connectors so I keep that practice. I agree that the pin and whatchacallit is there for safety reasons. One of the guys helping me didn’t turn it and we were lifting a log when it came apart…hydraulic fluid flew out for a couple seconds but it hit him in the eye, lesson learned The link to hose end chamber is missing the “b” in chamber btw😂

Lol sorry, I should also clarify the term originates with firefighting hose, where a Mr higbee added a notch on the threaded couplers of each side so that mating hoses quickly under duress and with ppe on would be easier. It marked the start thread of each side so you could repeatedly get a positive connection. …Former volunteer fireman….. it always stuck with me

Can I ask what hydraulic kit did you use for the rear ?
@Slider68
@Slider68 6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, hooking the male to female hydraulic doesn't ensure they are easy to disconnect. In fact, I found the only benefit is that it keeps the connections clean (like using a plastic cap). Last season, when I stored everything for us winter, I did just that with everything I could. This summer, I tried to use the accessories, and ALL of them were totally pressurized, and the only way I got many of them to work was to unscrew something on the hose. The issue was I put everything away on a cold day in the fall, and then tried to use everything on a particularly hot late spring day. Any time the temperature rises, liquids, including hydraulic fluid, increase in size, increasing the pressure.

Not necessary. Farmers aren't exactly clean freaks and hydraulic system damage from getting dirt in the couplers is almost unheard of. Sure, do your best not to cram dirt in there but a little bit won't hurt anything at all. It all gets filtered before it goes back through the pump.
