While I agree that ChromeOS being converted to Android won't be a good thing, while Google adopting widely used tool to convert it into a run-of-the-mill Linux distro might have been, there also has been some similarly adjacent news: With the current Android 15 QPR Beta (well, it still is current as it doesn't seem the latest beta is actually already rolling out), for probably the first time in all of the existence of Android, Google actually updates the Kernels for their Pixel devies. You know, like a normal Linux distro would do. Until now, they only backported changes themselves or relied on LTS releases. But now that LTS will be limited to just two years, while more OEMs promise like 5-7 years of updates, a solution had to be found. As it seems, all still supported Pixel devices have been updated to be based on Linux 6.1.99. So whatever Google figured out to make all those closed source driver modules and firmware work on newer Kernels, maybe there is stuff others can profit off too. Like Custom ROMs being easier to create, maybe even Linux distros for the Android Chromebooks, that may still need the Android-Linux Kernel but can otherwise be used as a normal Linux distro. Also I think forcing Google to sell off Chrome or Android would be just plain out dumb. Instead, there should be some control over both, like Chrome needing to adhere to certain standards that would in turn force them to allow proper ad-blocks again and all data collection to be transparent, optional and opt-in - you know, like at least Europe mandates for years already. Fact is, Chrome and Android are the biggest in their categories, selling them would harm everybody. Chrome/Chromium is the base for pretty much every browser and the lead when it comes to developing and adopting web standards. No other company would be able to take over, as literally just Mozilla and Apple are left as competition, and they are already struggling a lot. We don't need all Chromium-based browser to become another Safari, and I honestly don't believe browsers just all hopping on Firefox, or even contributing to it. That's the reason why everybody ditched their own engine. And Android? There is only iOS left, and that is just a steaming pile of garbage with a fancy paint job. There has been a duopoly for way too many years for any competition to emerge and stick around. And I don't even see Samsung taking over fully without compromising too much, and everyone else would most certainly lock things down at least as bad as iOS does. Then you can say goodbye to devices where you can even install Custom ROMs, let alone things like Ubuntu Touch, SailfishOS or postmarket OS.

The only thing that is important that google adds, is better support to add a bootloader to these devices, so it's easier to change if people wants, they make money anyway. Things are a bit more spicy and important in open source projects, like chromiumos, but also if they decide to stop the developing of chromiumos to have just android to work on, it is however open source, so the thing here is to make sure android will be really open source, like i read on some comments. @williamepps9519Ай бұрын
I had an issue with that too. I love Nick, but talking about your biggest sponsor and then having a sponsorship from them at the end is bad optics. What bothered me more was he used what Tuxedo did and the changes that they were forced to do as part of the selling points in the sponsorship. That's even worse optics.

What’s the point of steam machines? A huge portion of steam users build their own PCs, shouldn’t we be instead pushing for the release of steam OS so we can install it anywhere, like on a custom HTPC?
@isaicicourelАй бұрын
The code of conduct issue is that it doesn’t apply to all starting with Linus, so here we have a case in which no one knows who is allowed to insult others and who doesn’t, and which groups apply. Either make it explicit or don’t have a CoC that is optional depending on the individual.
@TheLinuxEXPАй бұрын

@ Linus just broke CoC by expelling any possibly Russian, Russian-adjacent or Russian sounding contributor from the Kernel (1st violation of CoC), then promoted a hostile environment to any with Russian ancestry (2nd violation of CoC). But yea, no bad words used at this time.
@terranbyte2619Ай бұрын
@@isaicicourel Well for the Russian expulsion, there wasn't much he can do. Its either Russian Devs stay and Devs that either work in American companies or are also americans themselves likely forced to leave working on the kernel due to the US's newest sanctions, which prevent any company or person from working with any russian national. And for that matter the ban or expulsion isn't like how you're describing it with some known russian devs being push out from working on certain of the kernel or having their work being checked. Also should be noted that sanctions like these would likely apply to a person that isn't an american national, but still employed by an american company as well. For example, the Cuban embargo prohibits any american company from doing any service to cuba that might help the cuban government, but a country like germany or another could not export anything to cuba as in order to do so would need a cargo ship that is insured but the insurance market for ships is dominated by american companies. Therefore, Unless the company that does the export wants to take the risk, can't ship the cargo to Cuba(and for that matter the cargo have to be german made with no american company involvement or money). There is also the Square payment system as an example a while back, where since it was an american business, it could not process any transactions that involved cuban goods, which became a headache for a lot coffee sellers in Canada that were selling cuban coffee beans since Canada doesn't have embargo on the country. so tdlr; because of US policy, the whole linux project had to do this in order for most developers to continue working on the project regardless of CoC or not. Also said decision would also impact any other project that has anyone that works in/for a US company or lives in the US.
@affieukАй бұрын
@@terranbyte2619 All these devs that put their own time and effort into code for the kernel, should be kicked out in the way they were? Was it really so hard to send a message saying, sorry guys our hands are tied? Very civil and the snarky comment from Linus being Swedish.

Chrome is open source. Such a sale isn't even possible other than the name. Anyone is free to make a competing product and they do. Someone at the DOJ seems to have missed that, in fact with this whole manifest v3 nonsense competing browsers like Brave may even overtake them.

We absolutely need Google to sell Android. The reason it's so hard for phones to have anything other than Android is because manufacturers are locked in a contract by Google in which if they provide anything else than Android, Google won't provide updates for their hardware. With this restriction lifted, it'd probably be easier for custom ROMs to support more phones.

I for one think merging ChromeOS and Android is actually good: the linux support on ChromeOS was more experimental (pun intended) than practical, and it's sandboxed like hell. Although I can pin linux apps to the app menu, it has to boot up the linux vm first (unlike Android apps that "just works"), some peripherals like pen input don't work (unlike Android apps), I can't easily share files in and out of the VM (unlike Android apps), and the overall experience is removed and different from the overall desktop experience (unlike Android apps). The name of the feature also makes sure you know it's for "linux development." Even being Linux itself ChromeOS can't run linux programs easily, not to mention you can't at all change the default browser... except you could set a different default browser within the Android subsystem. You get the idea. What I'm excited about is that, by making Android behave explicitly more like ChromeOS, Android itself will become more standardised, and the work is already ongoing. Starting from Android 11 with 5.4+ kernel (and 13 for all kernel versions), Google is requiring device vendors to package drivers as a kernel module rather than maintaining a kernel fork. It's not full mainline but it's close; at least it will be the same kernel across every (new) android devices. I guess this is why we're seeing more and more device manufacturers promising longer update support; it's actually easier and attainable now. Aside from that, now Android is gaining ability to run linux apps. I don't expect it to go any better than in ChromeOS but this actually gives linux mobile apps a new market, for free!

I think the Kent CoC drama is dumb. If you want him out because he pushes big, largely untested code, then punish him for that, don't lie to him and the community and make this about some mailing list drama from months ago. Lying about rules is VERY bad sign. If they want him to issue an apology over something he already worked out privately, that is entirely ridiculous. What's the point in an apology that neither person cares about?
@framegrace1Ай бұрын
You really didn't followed this case. THis guy is just impossible to deal with. This has been going on for months, whith developers having way more patience with their insults and arrogant behaviour that I would even remotelly have. If that's the only way to make him stop bullying everyone, is good.
@anonimusoАй бұрын
This is my take as well. If there's an actual technical issue with the code he is pushing, that's more than enough to remove him. But making a performative 'code of conduct' issue is really dishonest and makes me not want to trust or believe when the Linux CoC board says anything. Also, it was alleged that the 'apology' clause was added to the code recently, not a standard part of it.
@SummanisАй бұрын
@@framegrace1 Making up rules so you can say he broke them or selectively applying rules because you don't like him is more toxic to deal with than any amount of personal insults he could throw. If you want to ruin any community, fill it with rules that no one follows and only punish people who you dislike. I've been following the bcachefs drama since the 6.11 merge window and yeah, Kent needs to back off with pushing largely untested code, but using a totally different rule that no one has cared about before to bully him into "changing" is corrupt and pretentious.
