As somebody who works at the intersection of academia and tech/industry, I wish you two could turn both worlds up-side-down. I loved "Burn Book" - true gold and so on pointe. On balance, I'd say the true soul of Silicon Valley doesn't surprise as much as what academia looks like for a non-PhD.

When you do not have competition you can lounge, make mistakes whatever. Just keep up the status quo. Pay Apple billions if you have to. What are you gonna do? Leave? Companies like Apple have to hustle year after year to deliver new products and updates, get poked and prodded and told they are done year after year. with competition from all sides nipping at their heels. Google, like Amazon has a good gig. All they gotta do is keep their nose down and not have a fiasco like this. It's not that hard to just keep quiet not having to deliver anything new but they still do, The monopoly keeps investors happy, they just need to remember not to blow it because the the gravy train doesn't run forever.
