Cutest Poodle Puppy on earth , cant get enough of Buddy , hug him kiss him squeeze him for us please. Also I believe that primitive man was looking for any edge he could get to survive maybe thrive. Like building rock walls wherever rocks were found in plenty, or inhabiting caves cliffs canyons gullies and creek bottoms trying to avoid tree lines ridges and open fields . Always fortifying always on guard . Only a handful of humans have stood where you frequent often , that should say something to you about the caliber of person you are. walk boldly where others fear to tread and use and enjoy all that offers up whether a better vantage of a view or a short cut to the top.

If, as you said, there are a number of these on peaks around the area, it leads me to think they were a communications link. From one to another they could send up dark smoke signals or light fires. This way people at long distances could be notified of travelers headed their way, or find out the progress of people leaving them and headed to a distant place. They could indicate from what the travelers were wearing/carrying, if they were known people, strangers, warriors, women & children, what animals accompanied them, even how quickly thy were moving, if they carried items or humans on travois or sleds. Visibility at a distance would be difficult. But people of a tribe would surely have had codes for signaling. --Enjoyed your program muchly.

The red sandstone must have been hauled up there? That would have been some work. Makes one wonder if these were built before or after the introduction of the horse.
@ruinsandridges6 ай бұрын
Yes, definitely, that is a good point. The biggest source of sandstone for building is 1/2 mile away across a wash. Sandstone is easier to build from as you can shape it, and can make a nicer home. It seems to me that the structure which was semicircle used sandstone and that one could have been a kiva. A few other rooms were made entirely of red sandstone. Lots of work carrying those 500 feet up. And these are dated probably to be built before the horse.

@ruinsandridges5 ай бұрын
Not sure, but it is located somewhat on the border of Patayan and Sinagua cultures, and it is cool because ruin is also split up between red sandstone which Sinagua normally used, and basalt, which was used by Patayan. Maybe built around 1,000 years ago, and abandoned before 1,300 as many of them were.

How did they get water up there?
@ruinsandridges6 ай бұрын
There are two washes on both sides of this butte. Right now these washes only run with water when it rains. So either it was more water there 1,000 years ago, or they had a way to catch water in little water holes or store a lot in pots, or they had a spring that they used somewhere.

Fun discovery. I’m old enough to remember being told in school that the indigenous peoples were just too primitive to leave any trace. They lived in tents and mud and weren’t utilizing the land like the inventive and sophisticated Europeans. Yeah, right. John Wayne should have been slapped around for saying that the natives were just being selfish with a country they were apparently not “using.”
