I'm pretty happy with the tv box I already have (amazon firestick 4k sideloaded with kodi). It works well for playing back x265 encoded video, which is most of what I find these days. The only thing it doesn't do well is AV1 decoding. I'm not interested in getting a new tv box until there is one that can reliably and easily do AV1 playback.

"MT8696 MediaTek The core design is ARM’s Cortex-A55, and it’s said the GPU is Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR GE9215 with cores clocked at up to 850MHz. Lastly, it’s mentioned that the chipset offers support for decoding Dolby Vision, HDR 10, HDR10+, HLG, H.265, H.264, VP9, and AV1 content, which are all to be expected."

@@israelramirez0202 Well, that’s one opinion of course. Fortunately you can still cast to the newer units just like the older Chromecast. I do like the option of using the phone for some things, but I don’t mind the Google TV interface at all. Plus, I can pair my Harmony remote to it so I have a unified control system.

That Tachyon looked pretty cool, but the 4GB is a deal breaker.. for a CPU that chunky, you need the RAM to feed it.. I'd rather they raised the price $30-40 and make it 16GB, or better yet, add a SODIMM slot.. Great channel, consider me a new subscriber :P

I just wish they'd thrown a Tensor G2 or something in the Google Box the way Apple just use a slightly older SOC in their streaming boxes. Way faster than whatever they're using, economies of scale means it won't cost them a whole lot more and it means multi-year support as it's still in working phones. Open it up for android games, emulation and a DeX like mode along with a basic Nest Hub interface and you have the perfect little living room computer.

I got a Chromecast with Google TV 4K a few years ago and initially it was amazing. It would beat any built-in smart features on all TVs I had. Then with every update it started to become worse. Factory resets did not help. Nowadays it's a laggy mess.

"HDMI 2.1" in name only. Notice at 1:58 it only does 4k at 60hz; not much of an upgrade from the current 4k Chromecast. This could've been a ground breaking streaming solution for gaming on high refresh rate TVs using such services as GeForce Now Ultimate.

Looking for a replacement a Nvidia Shield. Nothing I've tried has the same suspended state function. Be great to be able to jump right back into an ETA Prime video after Netflix without having to renavigate through menus

Hope they improved the remote shape. The original with the round back side is a slippery mess. Need an aftermarket skin just to make it useful.

I would definitely love to see a review on the Google TV Streamer. Right now I running the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. I know the Google TV Streamer won't be a match for the Nividia Sheild, I'd still love to see a review as I'm always looking for a replacement.

The last Qualcomm SBC I had was the IFC6410 (same chip as the Nexus 4). I still have it sitting in a box unused, because it had basically zero support. They only ever released a couple of Linaro Ubuntu images for it, and then abandoned it entirely. When I tried building an upstream kernel for it, it saw the onboard SATA as a zero-port SATA controller. My worry with random boards like that Tachyon is that the same sort of thing will happen.

I would like to purchase Qualcomm's Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows but unfortunately their choice of supplier, Arrow, makes its exceedingly difficult to order for personal use if you live in the UK or the EU as Arrow only know how to export to businesses.

Regaring the new google box, I don't think it is enough performance for that price. It should have at least 1 "big" CPU core to ensure that it runs smoothly. My Nvidia Shield from 2015 is still rocking on and feels as snappy as it did almost 9 years ago. Nvidia delivering SW-updates also helped make things feel fresh. I will probably try and hold out for Shield 2 as Nvidia seems to have the right approach to keep their android devices up to date longer than most OEMs.

The problem with Google TV is they started pushing ads and recommended content on the home screens especially on the Nvidia shield one minute it was a nice clean home screen, then they started pushing their content their apps and ads on the home screen which resulted in a lot of us having to hack our shield or use different launcher that removed there adware so I won’t use any of their new devices the same reason I won’t use Amazon either if I buy a device and I give you my money I don’t also want you to bombard me with ads on my device that I paid for.

The Onn 4K Pro is also only $50 for what looks like the same performance. There doesn't seem to be any reason to by this new $100 device from Google. I was really hoping that it would be an Nvidia Shield competitor, especially for emulation, but it doesn't seem to come close.

@@kevinfromsales9445 - This year's Onn hasn't reached Amazon yet. Last year's Onn has 4.5 stars and is only $30. I'm sure it isn't as good as Google's streamer, but it can't be that far off. I've owned previous Onn streamers (now 3 years old), and they have been fine.

Google tv streamer is just for me if all Google Home and Nest devices work in it.

In an era where you can buy a ROG Ally X, complete with Windows 11, a controller layout, connectable to monitor for working purpose and can ve docked to a TV with dolby vision passthrough. You don't need a streamer, ever.

I don't really think an Ally X would do much in terms of streaming services to a HDTV in HDR formats. You might be able to get Netflix and one or two others in HDR/Dolby Vision, but it's pretty slim pickings, and not as remote friendly. Windows definitely has a long journey ahead to become a TV streaming frontend. It can't even handle Plex + HDR properly.

Not including WiFi 6 makes sense since it has shorter range and WiFi 5 is good for around 450mbps in good conditions and 4K content never goes over 200mbps. A lot of TVs still only include 100mbps ethernet ports.

No it doesn’t. Its competitors have already moved to WiFi 6 and even WiFi 6e. WiFi 6 handles congested WiFi networks (like condos/apartments/businesses/etc.) and when you are streaming you want as little interruption as possible. Most people I know have moved their APs to a centralized location or even using “whole house wifi” so distance is no longer an issue like it was when people would stash their single router in some office/guest room. No the speed doesn’t matter, but the advancements in dealing with congestion and 6ghz that comes with 6E means this makes no sense in 2024. The cost is negligible especially when it uses the same SOC as the FireTV Stick Max and that has a WiFi 6E chip and costs $35 regularly on sale.

@@paulbeers4105 WiFi 6 only helps reduce congestion when all or a plurality of devices on the network utilise OFMDA, the impact otherwise is limited. Most people's APs do not support WiFi 6, 6E or 7.

@@akr4s1a most people’s? Every ISP around here gives WiFi 6 or WiFi 6e stations. How many new APs are going in the market that have only wifi5 anymore? Even my old iPhone 11 that came out in 2019 has wifi6 in it. I just pulled up my network, excluding my IoT devices on the 2.4ghz network (since that’s all they have) I have just as many devices on wifi6 or better as I do on WiFi5. If this was a $30 streaming device, fine but it is not. This is a $100 streaming box that the wifi is being bested by devices that cost half as much.

The old Chromecast was such a laggy piece of junk. Most smart tvs now are faster than that. There's no real point in releasing a new box at that price that's still less powerful than a Shield TV.

It’s significantly more convenient to have an interface with a remote. Most people don’t want to use a wireless mouse and keyboard to control their media center. At home, I use an Apple TV for most things, and raspberry pi 5 running LibreElec for Plex and Kodi. I used to use an Nvidia Shield, but Google has ruined Android TV with tons of bloatware, ads, and lag.
