Google Maps MOD in Flight Simulator 2020

I tried the Google Maps replacement for scenery in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to see what it looks like and if it's worth making the change.

It didn't show much of a difference because you looked at places that actually had photogrammetry by default. Try somewhere like Dallas, Texas which notoriously doesn't have photogrammetry. It's so strange, Fort Worth and even Arlington have it but not Dallas. I'd also be curious to see what the non-Google server options look like, there's a Bing one that's more updated than the Bing in the game, and a couple others I've never heard of before.

Since I'm designing some scenery myself, I like to stick with the default tiles as well. They make me mad, in a lot of ways, and Google seems to update their tiles far more often than Bing, but it's what the vast majority of other users are seeing as well. And since it seems there isn't much discernible difference (Google seems to have a larger swing in color control) I don't find it worth it.

I did the hard way a year ago. Now u can just run a app! Ill test it out in small cities like my own. Even farm areas. Large cities I feel not best for testing this. Could be wrong. Thanks and new sub! Keep up the great work and quality. Deserve 10k subs by now... in time

When this first rolled out, there was a more noticeable difference in certain areas of the world. From coloration, to fidelity, you could tell the difference between Bing and Google. The biggest problems that led to a lack of adoption, was the way some tiles overlapped in Google. Some tiles were years and years old being overlapped with a newer set, so you’d end up with completely different colors. Since MSFS and Bing started to roll out newer, more accurate DEM data and tiles, there isn’t much need for this mod. They also have been doing their best to correct any of the tile issues, which can be reported on their forums. I’ve stuck with the default for this very reason and based on your review today, seems like my decision has held up! Thanks for the video brotha!!!

Bing does not render all Brazil areas, google is better for "abandoned" places, but in USA I think it is the same.

At Sweden westcoast this gets rid of green roads. Bing's satelite imagery in Sweden is awefull while google's isn't as of 2022 :D

Love this mod. Once in a while I will forget to launch it before starting flight simulator. Of course I notice it right away and have to close the sim to start the enhancer program. I'm very pleased with this mod. I even donated $20 for it. It is well worth it.

So far for me, it's best use is in Africa. You can clearly see the differences in places Bing Abandon.

This mod is great in some rural areas or very remote places far north, where Bing simply doesn't have any satellite coverage. I also think it has more realistic colors and since I mainly fly around Europe, it makes a bigger difference. Well, it used to, because ever since it requires to install a program, it just doesn't work for me. The app says that everything is ok, no problem, u good to go. But when I load up the game the program doesn't download any tiles and when you zoom in or load up somewhere the game replaces everything with those ugly default offline textures. I tried every server, but still was unsuccessful :(

I think it's better to use this in more rural areas. I'm currently flying the Alaska bush trips and have done it with both google maps and the default one and there is a big difference. The downside is that in rural areas they tend to have mixed tiles (some photos from winter, some from summer) which messes it up a bit and where there is no data or very low images it looks worse than default.

I would be careful using this Mod. Alphabet/Google is a straight competitor/rival of Microsoft (Google Maps vs. BING Maps) and I won't be surprised if Google takes action in preventing the use of their data in a rivals product (I don't mention the server traffic everyone generates when streaming the data). I don't want to be blacklisted or else by Google just for having a more acurate landscape here and there in the flightsim. 😶

I doubt Google would go after every single user that has it. I could see them blocking access for the app to work. But I really don't think they'd get a punitive as targeting every single end user. They rely on their API tokens to block access, which I assume the app uses.
