Google Maps vs Apple Maps: The New Colors, Do You Like it?

Google's implementation is better, but it is disappointing that they feel the need to mimic Apple Maps. Apple isn't some kind of industry standard and Google should be more confident in their own implementations

Absolutely agree. Especially think it shows with the water color, it's eye-catchy but very unnecessarily so... Who actually needs the water to be this prominent? I'd rather see it less than more, I legit couldn't care less about it and I'm sure most people feel this way. There's no way people actually care about where the water routes are at a glance.

I prefer the original colours, but I'll probably get used to the new palette. I usually use satellite view anyway because I find navigation much easier.

Creating a route for walking also removes most of the other information (similar to the example in the video for driving) but having more info for walking is better from a navigation pov and interest pov (sightseeing). Not sure why Google wants to look like Apple but the colours will take some adjusting to. One change that did improve it for me is using dark mode instead of light mode.

Due to the update, the sand turned the same white color as in the city, many elements are now more difficult to identify

Was out driving the other when I noticed the new change. It's much clearer in use and is a good, modern refresh. The darker blue of your present route works well..👍 to Google for this.

The “original UI” itself you’re thinking of is also a much later version of google maps itself. You just think it’s the original bc you’ve been using it for a long time. They make these UI changes for a reason based on research that subconsciously helps but the average person can’t tell the obvious reason why. You’ll get used to it like everyone does with all UI updates in any app and they’ll complain when the next major change happens and think of this new update as the “original” simply bc that’s what you’ve gotten used to. KZbin comments used to be endlessly scrollable right after the related videos at the bottom of a video but now you click on one of the top comments to open all comments. Everyone complained at the time bc they were used to just scrolling down to see comments but now everyone is used to it and you can see that it keeps comments in an organized location without having to scroll down further to see them. I recognize these things bc I’m also a UX designer

I wish Google would adopt the “at the next stoplight turn right” type of verbal directions. Currently “in 700 feet turn right” is sort of lame. Also, Google needs to have more options to reduce clutter on the map. Too may paid adverts all over the map which you can’t turn off. Also, why did they take out the 3D satellite view and put it into Google earth only. Again Google making too many apps for the same thing. Ridiculous. Their map apps are becoming like their messaging apps. Disjointed.

Sounds better overall tbh. I noticed this change right away when I saw Google Maps on a Carplay setup and honestly, it's much easier on the eyes and the contrast feels clearer with this new palette. I don't care if it's "copying". If it's a best practice to have, then they should certainly do it. That said, I think all map services should have alternate color palettes for different preferences, because having major motorways / interstates / highways in yellow has has its benefits too.

Google Maps favourites you can arrange in geographical order, well it does itself actually. But Google maps, keep sending me the wrong way, so Apple maps wins every time just for that reason. And you can download Maps on both of them, which you couldn’t do before with Apple maps.

I don't like it because they should focus on better readability. Imo Apple Maps look so much better and is much easier to understand, see streets, 3d malls. Also in my city only apple maps have details in malls or metro lines

@@Angel_Peg waze maps features are better than google maps though it tells you if police are ahead, if a car is on the soft shoulder, it even lets you know about traffic camera lights ahead etc. more people should be using waze the road would be a better place it even has an alert that lets u know if ur going over the speed limit

The color contrast is way too high on the new maps. I feel like I'm being flash-banged each time I open Google maps. I can only look at the map for short periods of time before I feel my eyes straining. This is the main reason my I liked the old Google maps over Apple Maps. It's far easier on the eyes. Now I've ended up using Apple Maps because it's now the one that is easier to look at when compared to the new Google maps.

I miss the ALL navigation centered , until google decided to shift the path to the right , and every one else followed them... Now i cannot use any navigation app in landscape mode... Google, Sygic, Tomtom Go, Tomtom Amigo, Magic Earth, Here WeGo, Petal, Waze and Apple. They all copied Google.

It's not 2:1, it's 3840 by 1819 this makes it closer to 19:9 which most smartphones use nowadays so, you don't need to pinch to fill the screen and lose some of the top and bottom areas
