JUST GOT THE UPDATE ON THE PIXELS BUD PRO ... THE FIVE-BAND EQ... I TESTED IT OUT AND IT DOES PUSH OUT A LOT OF BASS👍
@JohnLGalt_12 жыл бұрын
Hey, Brandon, always appreciate your candor and the extensive testing that you do. I got the Buds Pro and was as underwhelmed by them upon first use, but the new firmware did fix quite a few issues I had run into - and as an added bonus, when paired with my Windows 11 computer, with a licensed copy of Dolby ATMOS audio, was able to make use of ATMOS through the Buds Pro. With that being said, listening to your tests, the Buds A had a thinner bass line in every track I listened to, the Pros always had a more robust, full bass line, especially with the reverb of really low end parts of the tracks. I never changed anything at all, leaving the Buds Pro connected to the PC and ATMOS enabled, and I then went back and listened to the songs again using my Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, and I distinctly heard the same difference. That being said, I have to say these are the most comfortable buds I've used, I've kept them in for 7+ hours during a workday, connecting to all my meetings and listening to music in between. Other idiosyncrasies, though, as you noted, like certain frequencies coming through even with ANC enabled, as well as the feedback loop when grabbing the Buds in the correct manner, to the lack of filtering out noises through the mic, to even a weird bug I had where all calls were single channel (whichever bud went in first) are 100% spot on. And yet, even then, the ANC is so good I never knew I needed it until I used my Novas for the first time, and now that my other issues are out of the way, and with the ability to use ATMOS and custom EQ in the ATMOS app, I'm happy with them overall. I do hope there will continue to be more improvements, though.

The battery life and comfort is definitely a big strength for these, yes! I’ll have to look into the Atomos option you’re talking about. That’s interesting.

I'm not an audio engineering not an audiophile or qualified in any way whatsoever. I've had the Galaxy buds first gen, Sony WF-XM3 and first gen airpods pro. I switched from iPhone 13 pro Max to Pixel 7 pro and got the Pixel Buds Pro as well. They are good enough but no where near the quality of the airpods pro in terms of making calls, noise cancellation, sound and touch controls. They are outclassed in every way possible. I find the pixel buds Pro good enough to listen to music at home but hate going out with them in public, constantly having to put out an earbud when I'm talking to people or having to pull out my phone, having to go to Bluetooth settings and hit another settings buttons because for some reason Google thought it was a good idea for the pixel buds not to have a standalone app. The fit is not as good as the airpods pro either despite the ear check seal setting thing. They really are a 5/10 and that's being generous.

I saw that the Pixels Buds Pro was $40 off on BestBuy Canada and it also had better rating than the Sony XM5 and on top of that I watched Marquees Browlee's review of it then was sold on purchasing it. Big mistake. The sound quality isn't nearly as good as the Sony XM3. And now I realized BestBuy Canada changed their policy few years back on used headphones and won't accept them (even though BestBuy USA still allows it). What gives!

Damn, that is one fine review! Loved how you direct-recorded the buds to compare - my only feedback on that is that changing sources on the hits made it harder for me to judge what was due to the buds and what was just the mix/arrangement evolving - minor complaint, though :-) I did wonder if the tube affects the recording quality but I trust you'd only be sharing it if it matched what you were hearing. To my ears it sounded like the stereo image was being affected a lot by both buds, with the highs being really wide on both, and the upper mids on the A's seemed a bit scooped, but were more forward and narrow on the pro's (I'm listening on closed-back wired phones, plus all the youtube encoding along the way). Did you get that as well? I figure at least part of that will be down to the bluetooth codec as well. I was pretty close to ordering the pro's but after hearing these tests I'm not sure I'd be happy with either, really. So huge thanks for such an in-depth and unbiased review that lets us draw our own conclusions. I might stick with this pair of AU$30 buds I picked up - they're a tenth of the price but don't sound too much worse - although their ANC is probably nowhere near as good as the pro's. Do you offer stems of your tests (I'm guessing maybe in the members' section)? Anyway, awesome review and appreciate the technical depth and openness.

Thanks! Yeah, the tubes aren't creating an issue that I can hear, only when there's nothing into it and your speaking into it does it sound "tubey" haha. Yes, the Pro's definitely have a narrower sound stage, which is unfortunate.

Is it just me or do the Pixel Buds A Series almost always sound better. I haven't compleatly finished the video yet
@fsendventd2 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, the reason the A-Series sound better is because of Google's "spatial vent" which makes them into almost a semi-open sort of design. The Pros don't have that because it would defeat the purpose of ANC. That's the biggest difference I picked up on in the sound comparisons. For my part, I have both the Pixel Buds Pro and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and I think they both sound good, but the Galaxy Buds are better. They're both crisp and clear, neither sound compressed, but the high end on the Pixel Buds Pro is very recessed compared to almost everything else I've ever listened to, and yes, I checked that I updated the firmware. (However, the Pixel Buds will be the ones I'm keeping, because I'm allergic to the Galaxy Buds. They didn't fix that from the first generation Pros.) I also think the transparency is better, the Galaxy Buds sound very sharp and processed and you can hear all the high frequencies from stuff like your footsteps and your clothes rustling as you walk, while the Pixel Buds sound much more natural, if a little muffled (kind of like what it sounds like when you're wearing headphones, but headphones that don't isolate very much).

I just got mine and I started back to backing them with my soundcores on Dave Brubeck Take Five. I find it much better to demo non electronic music. There seems to be some high end roll off in the Pixels. The cymbals in T5 are way more subdued and less in your face. The Pixels do sound less congested. The bass strings lose some of their sizzle vibrating on the fingerboard. The Pixels also seem better dynamically. The have a much stronger attack on cose miced bass drums. The Pixels remind me of listening to a vintage tube amp that rolls off. I generally agree with the review, good job. The high end roll off doesn't bother me as much probably because my ears are old.

For some reason the audio is awful at first, and much much better with HD Audio on or off after resetting it. It sounds super weird, and I can't explain it, but it works. They also have a pretty good full EQ in the Bluetooth options menu now.

I listened to this with my PBP's, and it's not even close to what I hear in mine. I listened to "Hey Marjorie" natively and it is a huge difference in sound quality. I know it won't sound exactly the same due to YT and compression, but even an awesome review with all the right tools still can't replicate what you're actually going to hear. Unless the manufacturing of it is causing major differences in quality.

lol, if you're listening to the sound samples with the same earbud you're multiplying its sound signature. Gotta use something else.

Hey dude Is the sony wf-1000mx4 better than buds pro in sound quality?
@ThisIsTechToday2 жыл бұрын
I think they don’t have the harsh highs that the PBP suffer from, but they’re also quite dark, so you would need to EQ it to brighten and open it up if that’s your preference. Thankfully, there’s already an app with EQ sliders.

Thanks for this review! Really balanced and informative. I ended up springing for the Pixel Buds Pro even after seeing this and I have to say I'm really happy with them so far (these are my first buds with ANC and transparency mode, so I have no other experience to compare against). I might have stuck with my A series buds for longer, but they disappeared somehow and I decided to go with the upgrade. The Pros are definitely an improvement in my experience with help from Wavelet. Hoping for some native EQ settings from Google in a future update.

Ty for all the work you do--always learn a great deal from your vids. In the video it looks like you are playing your music files from local storage directly on your phone. As KZbin music is often a pain to use, and I have my entire audio library saved to my PC in FLAC or MP3--with the intent of transferring all of my music files over to my Pixel 6 Pro XL--could you recommend the very best audio player app to play locally saved music files? Would you recommend listening to music on your phone this way and do you yourself prefer this method of listening to music over streaming services?

Great content! I'm only asking this because you ARE a sound engineer. I've tried watching/listening to your videos on 2 different sets of headphones. Some of your plosives are coming through rather aggressively in my opinion. Is this an issue with my headphones (and/or my headphone settings)? Is this something you've done purposefully (Maybe you're bringing up your high end to enhance your speech that's affecting it)? Or maybe something else entirely?
@ThisIsTechToday2 жыл бұрын
When you say plosives but refer to high end, I'm confused. By plosives, do you mean my "P's" and "B's" or do you mean my "esses" ???

lol, I have to ask, are you wearing the Google Pixel Buds Pro? What are you listening on?
@IsaacNewsome2 жыл бұрын
I think it's important to consider whether you had ANC on or off, and then remember this the Buds Pro also adjust audio for pressure so I'm interested in an affirmation that all these processing bits were disabled, because the Buds Pro sound awesome in comparison to my A-Series. Smooth sound profile, wicked comfortable.
@ThisIsTechToday2 жыл бұрын
that's making excuses and no, the sound doesn't change to magically make it sound good. In ear detection was turned off an other processing bits. I'm confident my own ears could hear the issues because I EQ'd them with my ears to sound better and it sounds better in the samples I provided. I stand by my claims and never seem to give underhanded tosses to any company. If I did, I shouldn't review anything.
@skullcrusher_12 жыл бұрын
Actually I really do like the pixel buds pro. They are definitely comfortable and stay in my ears so double win for me. I find that these have the perfect amount of bass for me as I don't like bass heavy sounding headphones. The A series were definitely too boomy for me

@@ThisIsTechToday I only used them after the firmware update. I think I just got them last weekend but I can definitely hear the difference. I heard they may come out with a 5 band EQ later on so I'd be interested to hear your opinion if you revisit these.
@ThisIsTechToday2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I touched on the EQ feature. Maybe it'll be enough to make them a regular use, but it depends on how much control over the trouble frequencies it allows for. Wavelet only works in some apps, so it's annoying there, and other earbuds don't have touch gestures, so it's a frustrating time for earbuds right now.

It's unfortunate that Google keeps relying on in field development, most likely because they obsess about machine learning/a.i. development and/or just a company focused product development vs end result product. Effectively always having products only truly working at there best halfway through there product life, making the user have it buggy half the time. Sometimes Never getting all the bugs out and leaving the customer SOL *Writing this on a Pixel 6 Pro, which for the first 6 months was a buggy mess and I hate that it has now become one of my all time favorite phones 💀

I don't usually comment on videos, but I just wanted to point out that some of the issues you mentioned have been fixed in the first or second firmware update. For instance: the feedback "squeak" you mentioned was a huge concern to me when I first bought mine (I even bought a second pair to try to rule out it being a manufacturing issue), but after the latest update that feedback loop is completely fixed. That being said, this is a very good, in depth review (although definitely geared towards audiophiles), just maybe due for an update to address the fixed issues :)
@ThisIsTechToday2 жыл бұрын
All of this was done on firmware 2.14. Isn't that the latest build? I don't see a new one. Thanks for the kind words!
@Grubz52 жыл бұрын
@@ThisIsTechToday very interesting! Yes that is the latest I have as well. I know in depth technical reviews can take a long time to make so I assumed you might have filmed before the last update, but since that's not the case (and I imagine you would have included amendments even if it had been, given the care and diligence you put into this) I'm at a loss for why this could be. The issues mentioned that I personally noticed on launch were fixed for me in the last two updates (feedback, quality, higher volume compression, etc.). Then again, I don't have the equipment you have, so maybe what I perceive as "completely fixed" is actually more like "significantly improved" and still reproducible in a lab setting? Also can't rule out Google doing A/B testing with feature flags (which they love to do, but would seem a bit absurd in this case)... I don't know 🤷♂️ Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work! 👍

I figured out when I started shopping for the next gen ear buds that we've reached a ceiling on quality without going into an audiophile ($2000) price range. Bose top of the line buds were a joke, Sony's pro buds couldn't even stay in my ears with multiple adjustments, Google's second iteration was recalled. Ended up settling on Google's A series and eventually got my beloved XM-4s
