In digital imaging, a pixel, pel,[1] dots, or picture element[2] is a physical point in a raster image, or the smallest addressable element in an all points addressable display device; so it is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen. The address of a pixel corresponds to its physical coordinates. LCD pixels are manufactured in a two-dimensional grid, and are often represented using dots or squares, but CRT pixels correspond to their timing mechanisms . Each pixel is a sample of an original image; more samples typically provide more accurate representations of the original. The intensity of each pixel is variable. In color imaging systems, a color is typically represented by three or four component intensities such as red, green, and blue, or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

In this case, be sure to use the AccuBattery application.

I just fixed my pixel on my own with your video teardown. Thank you so much! I'm now a subscriber because I really enjoy your presentation style and humour. Awesome channel :D For any other first timers about to embark on your first Pixel 1 disassembling, a few tips to avoid damaging parts: 1) Trying to get your prying tool under the screen at the very beginning was actually really difficult to initiate. I tried for a while like in the video, but then decided to try using a suction cup to pull up on the screen while also still prying. It really helped open up just that tiny bit of clearance, but enough needed to get in there much more easily. Initiating is the hardest part, after that it's just patience and care. 2) On the lower part of the screen, the OLED layer beneath the glass goes significantly further than it appears to! About 6-7mm further! On the upper part of the screen it does as well, but only by a tiny bit, less than 1mm. So while using your flat tool to clear the adhesive, be careful not to go all the way up to where the screen appears to start, you need to stop 7+mm away. I would stop 10mm away to be safe, and 3mm away on the top. 3) Be careful with the heat gun on the under side of the screen. I was blowing heat in once I had a 2-3mm gap, trying to soften the remaining adhesive that was further inside, and it melted some of the OLED, and now I have this bright spot where it happened. Mine's not bad, almost purely cosmetic, but it could have been a lot worse had I not noticed that it was happening in time.

Well, I can rest a little easier knowing that most of the space at the chin of the phone is being used. The speaker module is pretty large. Obviously, this means Google made a conscious decision to not have front-facing speakers as they could have easily fit one in (I think it's probably due to it being blocked when being used with the Daydream headset).
@neiljohnson19568 жыл бұрын
Yay! Logical thinking! I knew Google had a chin for a good reason.
@chrisdaniels1608 жыл бұрын
Can't really agree with this. Both the speaker and the motherboard in the bottom seem unnecessarily large compared to other phones. Especially the speaker. A lot of wasted space.
@classicONJ8 жыл бұрын
You just said the speaker is large which is exactly what I said? The motherboard is at the top actually and what you thought was the motherboard is the charging board, which is also large. I hope you realise that any engineer from any major tech company isn't that dumb to just poorly design things that waste space. I am fairly confident now that they made the chin as big as it is to be fully symmetrical with the "forehead" of the phone (have you ever seen an asymmetric smartphone before?). Also after testing it out at the store (I'm from Australia), it's quite an ergonomic design as its easier to reach the navigation buttons one-handed than some other phones (although only a small effort to stretch my thumb, I found it noticeable).

"We will find out what's inside a pixel" and I expected Zack to give us 3 subpixels inside lol But for real, why it seams to m3 that Iphones are the only ones where replacing the display and battery is no big deal? With the Pixel you need to remove the screen and then the MoBo to get to the battery, for the Galaxy you'll need to remove the backplate, battery, and all other components to free the screen.

> "the screen replacement is surprisingly easy - especially if you don't care about your original screen anymore" So right, and thanks for that advice because I made sure to order (and receive!) a replacement screen before attempting a battery swap. Despite practising on a bootlooped device the other week, I managed to again ruin the display while removing it (this time on my main). This time at least, I saw exactly where I went wrong - not only is the AMOLED panel susceptible to pry tools, it'll even crack if you even lay a piece of card into a corner. Bam! There went the display after I immediately checked as soon as I noticed an "oh no" lower right corner breach. I do wonder if the upper portion of the display is as likely to lead to total display failure if chipped? I think I was about 75% of the way to removing the screen, but probably focused too much on not scratching up the paint on the bezel sections and overused my business cards too early. I would recommend working more on the top/lower bezels using the thin pry tool (although I was worried about the cables on the lower bezel this time as I had probably wrongly assumed that I broke a cable last time rather than the panel). As for getting a gap for the thin pry tool. Twice now, I've managed to find a gap on the lower right long edge with a little suction cup assistance (and regular heat, of course). After that, I very carefully worked my way around the phone in both directions using a combination of the thin pry tool, guitar pick pry tools and cards to hold the gaps open. Remember of course to have a *little* bit of charge in the phone to test the display regularly to learn when the mistake will be made. Overall though, my battery (and screen) swap was a success. And hopefully next time I'll be more improved!

Hey Jerry Rig Everything, thanks for the video! quick question, is it doable to buy a 32gb Pixel and swap the memory, because with the 4K video I'd like to get 128gb...

Regarding attaching a new screen or even the old screen again. Don't forget you have to clean off all the old black tape and replace it to get a good snug fit. Just mashing the screen back on the old tape won't be as good and might even come off again. It's about the same with samsung, xperia and ipads so make sure you get that tape with the screen! Cleaning is a bit of a pain but necessary, try using a flathead screwdriver to scrape it with some isopropyl alcohol to loosen the tape up. Dip a toothbrush in iso and carefully brush the tape (do not overflow anywhere so whack the toothbrush so it's only moist after dipping it and keep it off components) then scrape the moist tape off everything. After a few rounds of that you can take some cloth of any kind and use that instead of the flathead with more iso brushing to get a nice smooth and clean surface. Iso vaporates quickly so be aware of fumes. Just don't get isopropyl on the new screen or it might dissolve its reflectors = bright spots might appear on it. In any case, this should get superb repairability on ifixit.

No front facing speakers, not water resistant, no wireless charging, "verizon only" bullshit. WTF Google?

You can get it unlocked from google. But ya, the exclusivity thing is annoying.

And this is why I'm glad I bought that 2 year replacement plan from Google. While I'm sure I could do some of this, I have a strong feeling I would screw something up or get some crappy parts.

Hey, great video, as always! One thing though - the "round signal wires" are actually coaxial cables for RF signals, like WiFi and Bluetooth. :)

Keep up the great work you're doing. It's nice to have a teardown review as it give us an insight on how a smartphone is build and its possible weaknesses. Can you do a video of the Sony Xperia XZ ? :D :D :D

Although the Pixel doesn't have OIS, it's well stabilised with EIS using the gyroscope. I would say it's better than S7's stabilisation.
