The Google Pixel Watch 2 continues impressing in 2024, even after testing it for several months. However, compared to my initial review, I have encountered some issues, and today I’ll share all those findings with you. We will systematically test the Pixel Watch 2 on myself for heart rate tracking during different exercises, compare the sleep tracking against EEG and also take a look at the GPS tracking.
The Pixel Watch 2 has a bunch of new sensors, which are supposed to make it better than the original Pixel Watch, but is this actually true? That is what we will test in this video. I tested the Pixel Watch 2 when it came out, and I was generally very positive. In the meantime I have tested it much more thoroughly, comparing it against a sleep EEG device for 12 nights and testing the GPS consistency over 10 bike rides. However, I want to start off by testing the heart rate tracking performance, which I tested during a total of 56 workouts on myself and for 13 workouts on Theresa. And to get a fair set of data, I also retested the original Pixel Watch.
OK, with that out of the way, what do I think of the Pixel Watch 2. Well, I am actually quite happy with how it performed overall. It performed quite well in all the different categories that I tested it in, and seems significantly better than the Pixel 1 in terms of heart rate tracking. It was generally amongst the top performers for heart rate and sleep, though not the actual top performer, which is still the Apple Watch. However, for Android users the Apple Watch is not an option, so the Pixel Watch 2 is quite a good alternative. I personally think the design is not that great for men, and I would have preferred for it to be a bit bigger, but that is very subjective of course. Also, the way Fitbit software is integrated into the watch feels a bit messy, and it doesn’t feel like an integral part of the watch. It is unclear for instance when looking in the menu if you should work out with Fit workout, which seems to be part of Google Fit, or Fitbit Exercise, which is part of Fitbit. But ignoring all that, and just focussing on the health and sports tracking, the Pixel Watch 2 is one of the, if not the, top contender on Android. So, if that’s what you are looking for, I can definitely recommend it. So overall for sports and health, I’d give the Pixel Watch 2: 4 out of 5 stars.

Hi, Rob. Very, VERY surprised by the massive dropoff in HR accuracy of the PW1 in the indoor cycling. One year ago, you yourself said this was one of the best performers that you had tested, trailing (basically) only the Apple products. Now, one year later, it's dropped to a .70??? Excellent video! I've become a bit of a Pixel Watch convert and have enjoyed getting fit/losing weight with the help of the Fitbit environment -- I now trust it more than I did the system on Ticwatch Pro 5. Now I have the Pixel Watch 2 with better battery/faster charging, topping it up once a day for 30 mins before bed is no hassle. I now fin it the most comfortable and "smartest " of fitness trackers. Just a point on your comment re Fitbit integration - I assume that you have manually installed the Google Fit apps on the watch since they are not their on either of my Pixel Watch 1 or Watch 2. Can't be confused if they are not there. The only issue I have found with my Watch 2 is the GPS cutting out completely at random midway through a tracked exercise - all the rest of the metrics are recorded correctly, the GPS track and altitude tracking just randomly stop. I'm currently in comms with Fitbit/Google to try and work out if this is a hardware/software fault. It seems from the internet that I'm not the only person experiencing this issue.

@TheQuantifiedScientist I am still experiencing the GPS tracking issue on this watch, it's just stopping tracking at a random point during my tracked walk. Google Support has just passed me on to FitBit support as it's an "exercise tracking" issue - have to say the experience of FitBit support has been pretty poor so far - they just closed my case as they'd "not heard from me for a while" even though I was waiting for a response from them on what they are doing about the issue! Is this something you have experienced or heard about elsewhere? I'm wondering if this is actually a hardware issue as I never experienced this with Pixel Watch 1 (or any other smartwatch I have used from Samsung, Mobvoi or Huawei). Starting to get VERY annoying!!

Too bad Battery Life is not Measured in WEEKS or DAYS...and not HOURS. Until that changes I'll stay with the Fitbit Charge 6 and Garmin Vivoactive 5. If you're on Android and live in the US these seem like two very logical choices for the $$$. But if Google can get their Battery Life problem solved I would definitely consider a future Pixel Watch. I take the accuracy of heart rate and sleep tracking along with smartwatch features over battery life. I had a Fitbit Sense and battery life was nice but I honestly don't miss it since the Pixel Watch 2 charges quickly and I do a top off while getting ready in the morning and at night. 20 minutes, give or take.

@@eezeepee In 2024, if you have an Apple, Garmin, Fitbit, Pixel, Samsung, etc...we're now down to those last percentages of accuracy. Increasingly it's depending more on each individual's personalized fit to the sensor on their wrist...as we continue getting closer to the point of diminishing returns. Rob is now seeing this more and more as his GF increasingly sees different/better results using the SAME smartwatch. The Pixel Watch 2 is an excellent smartwatch no doubt, if you're OK with charging it once per day or multiple times a day that's great. But once you get used to charging once a week...it is hard to go back.

@@mboikoI have to second that. Everything is going to be more than accurate enough for general users. If any of us were really that serious, we'd have those $1000 Garmin upper tiers or Polar straps or other medical grade stuff. The One Plus Watch 2 also looks to have just completely demolished everyone with a fully smart Wear OS but lasts 4+ full days AND has super fast charging that only takes 10 mins for another full day or only 30 mins to completely full charge. I have a suspicion the PixelW 3 will probably use a similar hybrid twin OS + twin chip setup.

For instance, the Apple Watches consistently perform at the top of all your tests, yet when I tried them they consistently dropped the heart rate signal so that I would have large chunks of no HR data during my activities, it was especially bad for weightlifting. By contrast, my Garmin FR965 performs reasonable well across all activities (chest straps are way better of course). So how much variability is there between individuals and between proper fits? No matter what I tried for example, I couldn’t get Apple to work (despite multiple bands and tightness levels).

I tried to wait for this video before buying my Pixel Watch 2 but, NGL, I couldn't wait. I'm happy with the device so far. My main worry is its battery life, and how much it consumes whilst tracking workouts. BTW, Have you explored the differences between the "Weights" and "Weightlifting" modes? Great video!! Cheers!!

Another thing that concerns me is not knowing how accurate is the step counter (the phone (Google Fit app) counts different, but also I don't always carry my phone at all times), as well as the calorie consumption estimation, which I'm aware all devices over-estimate the calories burned but I'd like to see an option to change it so it's closer to a reasonable number.
