I'm impressed with the Pixel using automatic settings. It seems that Google actually produced a good camera this time around. Although I believe the LG V20 will beat it out slightly once the final software is released. Also if you take it further and want to use manual settings I'm sure the LG V20 can make a shot looks just like you want it. That is one thing I absolutely loved about my LG V10.

Yeah, its a whole different world in the land of manual settings! For these tests we just try to focus on what the majority of people use (default app and auto settings).

I'm curious if the P3 wide colour gamut of the iPhone 7 would cause the colours to look less saturated - as you're viewing the images on a display which isn't P3 by the looks of it.
@IDGTV8 жыл бұрын
Great point! The iPhone technically has that to its benefit (and it does look great) but we are trying to test under the most common scenarios (ie shooting a photo on your phone and looking at it on your laptop) and most people don't have a calibrated monitor.

Surprised to see the Pixel selected above the V20 here. The only place it seemed to have an edge was in the fur detail, and that might have come out in the contrast. The V20 clearly exceeded it in details on the more obvious text. The Pixel is slightly more colour balanced, but it's crushing blacks. I can balance the colours myself. Can you recall black detail that isn't there? Winner: V20

Comparing dynamic range without any highlight in the scene? What????
@User3747.a8 жыл бұрын
Why does the video end so abruptly?
@theSUBVERSIVE8 жыл бұрын
I don't quite agree with the dynamic range test. The best way would be to take a picture of a challenging situation, when you get both shadows and highlights, like a sunny picture with some dark areas and see which camera was able to retain more details on both ends. Another interesting test would be to see how much you can recover from the file, pushing the shadows up and the highlights down. I know you guys tried to use just the default image, but this would give people more info and they will know how to take the most advantage of the camera.

Um, the V20 crushed it in low-light and only BARELY had less detail at 100% zoom vs. the Pixel XL. But the V20 also had the better dynamic range and has far better audio and video over the Pixel XL. The V20 won here. And that's for a pre-production model.
@rathk12708 жыл бұрын
depends on preference. Most people use flash during in low light situations. I would say the Pixel and the V20 are tied. I would lean more for the Pixel for the superior outdoor shots. Of course, the V20 is much more fully featured with manual controls and all that jazz.v20
@InvisiMan20068 жыл бұрын
Flash kills photos, so unless it's a dark scene (not just low light), most people would opt for a handheld shot (something that even google says would benefit more from OIS than EIS). Outdoor shots are nice on the pixel (we haven't seen the comparison with the V20), but outdoor shots tend to always be good regardless of the camera being used. Audio is killer on the V20 in videos, so that's something else that software alone can't fix.

Hey guys, you should have left the pixel in auto HDR+. That's the default mode, NOT HDR set to "on". That's what Google recommends and that produces better results. from the Verge: "One of the few things that was communicated to us before we were handed review units was that Google recommended we leave the “Auto HDR+” feature on while shooting." (www.theverge.com/2016/10/27/13425282/google-pixel-camera-auto-hdr-low-light-feature).
@IDGTV8 жыл бұрын
They told us that as well, but we decided to ignore it because thats silly to have a feature in there but perform worse. It was more important that we kept all phones to a baseline and not play favorites, we would have done the same if Apple asked us to test it a certain way as well. -Adam

Adam, You have mentioned V20 is scoring in terms of retrieving the black details/information from the image shot under low light. Well, actually in the low light the black details are nothing more than noise from what I understand and by seeing the test shots here. The moire is visible with the V20, i7Plus and S7. Honestly, I think pixel did a good job by suppressing the noise into the rich black. As far as I saw, other smartphones brings up the noise in the dark/low light conditions or simply they soften the noise resulting in a softer image. I firmly believe, the pixel stands out in the low light by suppressing the extraneous noise by turning them to pitch black making the subjects under the light really stand out. There is not much noise or softening of the dark details happening with the pixel here. I would rate Pixel for the best dynamic range and low light photos. Iphone7 for optical zoom details and video stabilization and V20 for preserving the overall details in low light. You guys are the best unbiased smartphone reviewers, I have ever watched. Just subscribed and keep up the good work !!!

I was wondering, if the pixel handles manual mode in the photo and video as well it supports RAW?

Pixel is so close to the S7 wow. Never seen a phone that is so close to Samsung when it comes to high quality photos. Its even better than the S7 in some situations. What I like the most about the Pixel is that its so pleasing to the eye. Even if the colors are not that much accurate, the picture looks really nice and its really eye pleasing. It makes the shot look realistic. Iphone and V20 meh... V20 is maybe the sharpest one in low light, but it definitely struggles when it comes to color accuracy. I have a feeling that every photo is blue/purple at low light. Iphone 7 is not even producing a clear image. Totally blown out and washed out photos and no clear details. To all of you who want to buy one of these phones, i will tell you the negative and positive characteristics of all phones: - Iphone 7: Overexposed and blown out photos with no detail clarity, but good for taking portraits, selfies and telephotos. The macro is also improved on the Iphone. . - V20: Clear photo at low light, but no color accuracy and no pleasing photos to the eye. Totally out of competition for me. - Pixel: Really nice front and rear camera, great HDR + and awesome photo quality. Really pleasing to the eye. Struggles when it comes to no flash low light photography, and a bit bad for close distance focusing and taking a macro shot. Its the best surprise i've ever seen on the market. Really nice camera. - S7: Its a low light king and it has the fastest dual pixel autofocus. Best macro, and a nice telephoto if you buy the telephoto lens from Samsung. Great and accurate colors, nice focus control, nice eye pleasing photo. Selfies are losing details sometimes (the background details), but they're nice and clear due to the f/1.7 In overall, its the best camera out of all 4. I mean most complete and balanced in every aspect.

@FastRedPonyCar8 жыл бұрын
Not bad. I still have my 6P but battery life with nougat is atrociously bad. I've handed T-mobile two Note 7's back now and after using that device, if I can't have Android on a note 7, I don't want it at all. Vanilla android is not bad but it's honestly kinda boring and a little TOO vanilla for me these days. I ended up getting an iphone 7 plus. Predictable and reliable. The pixel fell flat for me on hardware features (again, spoiled rotten by the note 7), especially given the price tag. 256g iphone is big enough to hold all my music/files/etc and is the only option aside from removable storage. I was hoping you guys would do a RAW comparison of the 4 devices in the vid though. I know you need 3rd party software for the iphone and pixel (not sure about the LG) but it'd be interesting to see what those sensors are really capturing without the compression and software processing getting in the way.

This review is not correct, due times, ISO and f of cameras. V20 best low light? Yes, but the camera got 1/9 time = 0.1111s! which is the greatest value of all. Other shot at quicker times (pixel 1/17 = 0.0588s, iphone 1/15 = 0.0666s )! For real comparsion, please, set cameras on manual and shot with exact same camera settings.

The Pixel is technically the better camera here, the V20 will have make more compromises because of the size and limitation of its sensor, the 16MP V20 vs 12MP on the Pixel will give you more sharpness but more noise and less dynamic range. Meaning more processing for a good picture.

Screw the Pixel. One of the best things that was so great about the Nexus series was the price point. Too many sacrifices were made on this device compared to other flagships out there. Carrier exclusive to Verizon? Talk about selling yourself short....Come on Google!!!
@raymaster9728 жыл бұрын
JagStang77 Keep in mind that it's not a Nexus phone anymore.. think about cars for a good comparison. There's always a few models with different prices. Google has a Pixel brand that makes luxury tablets and Chromebooks and now they have phones. Which in their mind justifies the price, they're trying to compete with Samsung and Apple and you can't deny the fact that they produced a great product with one of the best cameras around. Also you could always get the Pixel from the Google store you don't have to be tied down to a carrier.
@JagStang778 жыл бұрын
+raymaster972 There is just absolutely nothing appealing to me about the Pixel whatsoever. That's all I'm saying and I think Google is expecting WAY too much. Only 2 memory options with no expansion? They are moving backwards before they even start lmao!!!
@raymaster9728 жыл бұрын
JagStang77 Just look at their competition and you will see why they went that route. I'm specifically talking about Apple.. Google wasn't interested in packing the Pixel to the gills with features. It seems that they're going the iPhone route. They made an expensive phone that works well lol. Just trying to be as neutral as possible here.. my daily driver is a OnePlus 3 by the way lol.
@JagStang778 жыл бұрын
+raymaster972 Ya I totally understand that. I try to stay as unbiased as possible but I guess I'm just extremely frustrated with every manufacturer/carrier right now. eveyone keeps cutting key features and replacing them with irrelevant gimmicks and inflating their prices year after year.
