Thanks so much for this. One possibly helpful addition - if you choose "Transparent" for the border color (found at the bottom of the color options), it will allow for bolder letters showing even more of your photo.

I started following you during the 2016-17 school year. I was teaching in Napoleon, Ohio at that time and you did a PD for our school. Fast forward to now and I'm teaching HS Art in another district. I started a Digital Art class last year, and my kids have Chromebooks. So we do most of our stuff in Google Drawing, plus some animation in Slides. This Word Art project is perfect for my class! Last year I had them do a similar project in Pixlr, but I have wanted to be able to do this in Google Drawing. And with your tutorial video, now we can! I'm going to watch your advanced video next, but I just wanted to thank you for this. You always have the best resources and ideas. I use them often. Thanks for all you do!!

If you need to group items you can select the multiple items by Shift-clicking on them to select all of them, then you can do the grouping by right-clicking an choosing "Group" or by clicking "Arrange" in the top menu and then choosing "Group".

Unfortunately that is the only font Google currently offers that will work this way. Hopefully they will add more fonts that are color-inverted in the future. I would love to have more options to choose from as well. For now at least we have a way to do this.
