I work for a large US Tech company. At our end-of-the-year roundup we were told that up to 75% of all IT jobs will be lost to AI within the next 3 years! We're facing a massive flood of layoffs and millions of IT professionals will go hungry soon. We're outsourcing our customer support to call centers in India and Philippines. Both of our call center contracts will be eliminated by the end of 2024 due to AI taking over. Imagine that!

I too am of the viewpoint that the conversation would be about what money really means -not simply, ‘adjust your skills’ to stay competitive in the job market . You can't blame the company, governments have to tax the company's excess profits and provide more and more ubi. As we go towards stronger AGI, there are going to be fewer and fewer jobs available. And this notion about upskilling is stupid, there are not going to be that many people doing research work, the whole world is not going to become a machine learning engineer😂😂😂.

False. The original article that this stems from stated that an SVP spoke to their org of 30K people about AI, and someone during that meeting asked about layoffs. That's literally all that happened.

My opinion is that so many people in the general workforces of many of the large employers such as Google, et al. fail to understand that the world will always progress, and that each of these people should not believe that the skills they have acquired through college or university or other courses are the b-all and end-all of their livelihood. It is imperative that each person continue to learn, and I understand that they need to change with the evolution of technology, this way nearly all of them will have gainful employment. I tried to learn for three hours per day, every day and I am of their livelihood. Its important to know how corporate bloat starts: first adjust policy/procedure for extra nuance & complication. Then, a vp can justify more hiring and get more people under their control. It becomes job security, offered up with a [sometimes] defective question when a board looks to axe a vp slot: "who will manage all this?", as they point to the unecesssary edifice they built to bulwark their position. And yes: bonuses do tend to reflect the number of people under management, but that can be guarded against on the front end somewhat with careful by-laws. Ultimately it comes down to ethics. Google doesn't have an ethics office - they chose to have a diversity department of sorts [whatever its proper title is] instead. The company will fail without correction - I see an ever increasing degradation in quality of search results over the last several years, and it isn't letting up.

What are you learning? What you learn in a month that is 90 hours, computer will learn it in 1st second. It will implement the learning better than you can. While your learning can be usable after about 6 months of practise, computer will do in on the 2nd second. While your learning will be usable in one company, the computer will scale up in the 3rd second and will be usable across the globe. No amount of learning is going to save. The computer probably already knows it all. 30 to 40% of the code is already AI generated.

Everyone's brain works a bit differently. Everyone learns differently. Everyone has different definitions of their preferred ways of life, and sometimes that doesn't include constant education, nor should that be required for everyone in their 70s and 80s, even if that works fine for you. And besides, learning more won't ensure people can still get jobs, when they're competing against super intelligent AI. We MUST change the social requirements that everyone has to have a "job" to justify their survival.

Okay, that means I had chosen the right career, 😂😂 I am doing masters in AI and Robotics, before coming to this field, I was asked by my relatives that what you will do by doings masters in Robotics and AI in a foreign county? What would be your opportunities in India? Right now I can say at least that I know how AI algorithm works, I know how maths and statics can drive the world.

Will this happen As AI is getting powerful day by day and in the near future crores of people will be laid off and in that case the source of income of these crores of people are disrupted and they will stop spending on unwanted items. In that case the profit of corporates like amazon, starbucks and the local businesses too go down. In that case the companies that advertise in google, meta etc will also go down in profit. In that case they will reduce the investment in advertisement. In that case the profit of companies like google and meta will go down. Also people will stop buying over expensive products like apple. So in that case the whole corporates who fired people for more profit starts getting low profit due to the firing.

govt already use AI based telemetries, to record work performance of all employees in a department, parameters such are in/out times, attendance, work output and productivity, targets etc. are evaluated every month to rank the employees and gives penalties to those who dont work, or dont WANT to work, eventually suspending the defaulters. This is already happening in national govt banks, go and check. Dont boast on govt job, even THAT is not safe anymore.

No matter how much important u make Google seem it doesn't produce food. Humans will stay alive without watching utube... N if I can't afford to buy food mayb I will end up learning how to farm with all that free time. AI is out of the bag n capitalist need to think how long will they be able to run this money led economy. AI can reskill 10000 times faster than humans can, implement the solution better immidiatly without practise and scale to infinity globally in seconds. Humans wont stand a chance. This is why the father of AI quit google. He foresaw this.

exactly, everyone keep saying - upskill yourself in the age of AI, or find new skills and jobs that cant be done by AI, but that is the question, what skill are you talking about to upskill when that can also be taken over by AI next year? Its just the matter of time, when AGI would make each and every upskill meaningless, then what? every syllabus and course introduced now in univ. or online will be outdated within 1-2 years, then what? next level? how many levels?

People built databases for AI to use. They manually filled them day by day bit by bit. Now they losing jobs because of this. Who knows maybe its using my public repository in github as well as someone's in order to execute somebody's search in Malaysia for example. Who knows?
