The Google TV Streamer has to be one of the worst follow-on products I have ever seen. There is essentially no advancement over the CCWGTV 4k and the new features are things that most people won't use e.g. "Thread" hub. For me, the Streamer is actually a step backwards, it does not allow deinterlacing of OTA broadcasts e.g. HDHomeRun.

I'm getting the Google Streamer because it has a USB-C port that I use to add a dongle for my keyboard, trackpad, and additional storage. I can sideload more usable apps with it. And the extra gig of RAM and plenty more storage will be a welcome and stable upgrade from my Chromecast dongle.

Google Streamer. How does it handle TrueHD, not ATMOS, streaming from Plex? Can it pass through via HDMI? And I am talking about the TrueHD portion, NOT the lossy "Core" that is included. Does the ONN do pass through for TrueHD? I know ATMOS works but want to know if I should migrate from my CCWGTV to an ONN or the new Streamer.

No streaming app allows Dolby Tru HD or DTS HD Master Audio 5.1. Dolby Digital plus or Atmos is allowed. Those lossless codecs require more bandwith for streaming services. Only on Bluray discs you will get them. Atmos is not a standalone on bluray or 4k bluray discs. It is a spatial surround expansion of Dolby Tru HD.

I purchased the Chromecast non-4K almost years ago when I went on sale. Should have purchased the 4K version, hopefully the TV Streamer will go on sale during Black Friday. And I'll use my old Chromecast on my bedroom tv. I agree I would trust Google more than ONN for timely updates.

Shield is old old old. No one really cares or wants to compare a device that came out in 2015, 2017 or 2019 depending on the model but they all mostly the same. I had but its lacking in so many things that I ended up selling it and buying the Dune HD Homatics R 4K plus. It does everything the Shield does and more since it has AV1 support. Android 12, HDR plus, Frame matching, All the Audio codecs etc etc etc

Most people with a Shield are happy with it, they are still have decent performance for the age, so they ask because they may want to know if it is worth finally upgrading. I have the Homatics with Core Elec and it's fantastic.

My Onn 4k Pro is a little jerky playing back my video from a 4TB flash drive plugged into the USB port. I usually publish MP4 at less than 100Mbps, in h264 or h265. I wonder if the hardware in the Google is more capable at decoding h264 or h265? What kind of bitrate can they support?

So I got a new problem. I'm using the Samsung S95D and the Samsung Q800D Soundbar. The Soundbar uses the e-arc HDMI (HDMI 3). Now, where should I plug my Google TV Streamer? I tried other HDMI but the Google remote doesn't control the volume/Soundbar. If I use the TV remote it works, but if press the NETFLIX button it opened the Netflix from the Samsung TV, and I cannot use any feature of the Google remote. Much appreciated.

I have the Onn 4k pro, bought it because of all these reviews saying it doesn't lag. Well it LAGS, lags like crazy. It doesn't stutter like other devices, it just straight up goes crazy and becomes unusable sometimes. Scrolling through Netflix has a noticeable delay for when you press the button and the action occurs on the TV. It's very much a mid device, it worked great new but not sure what happened.

The software support for these is a fair point - the Chromecast 4K/HD are getting 5 years, so the Streamer likely will also, but the Onn streamers will probably get closer to 3 years. I know the 2021 Onn box hasn't gotten an update since the summer and is likely EOL.

I guess, but they also said they'll continue to support it. I just bought the Chromecast 4K on saturday to update our old 2017 samsung tv in the bedroom and I love it. I have a newer Apple TV 4K in our media room on our big screen and honestly, the CC4K is just fine. I'd prefer another AppleTV but for a bedroom TV that just needed more speed the CC4K does what I need it to do. I wasn't about to spend another $150 on an AppleTV. The CC4K is still snappy, software is still good and I don't know why it would need to be faster or more updated when all most people do is click into an app. And most people should have it on App-only mode to reduce any network bandwidth it's using and to just get into their streaming app easier.

I did, as other pro's have done, performed a side by side with same content from both sources. You are definitely convinced once you see it. So, it is not an opinion, but a technical fact.

Forced trailers. FBI warnings. Plex full quality UHD rips via a streamer is the best solution. For me anyway.

Have them on my Jellyfin/Plex. Also, many Blu-ray collections ruin the original intent and / or have modified the shows (Buffy HD for example). Basically, I torrent have to torrent all the correct versions anyway.

I bought the ONN 4K pro when it came out and it's been nothing but trouble. I have 2 user profiles. one of them randomly stopped working. if you use another app and go to KZbin, it stutters. Only option is to reboot. I had no option but to abandon it and go back to the Chromecast.

Advantage is just more of quality of life update. Basically apart from the google integration and more apps support it’ll just be much more faster and optimised experience. There wouldn’t be much of a picture quality though.

The main issue with tizen is no VLC player available. Otherwise my s90d is fine for KZbin, max and netflix as is. The built-in media player isn't the best though. Plex is ok, but I'd rather have VLC like I did on my old Sony TV with android

Yeah, here in the UK it only comes in the gross cream colour. That match is nothing in my house if they want me to have it out on display they should probably have more options. Then again, I'm not buying it anyway. I got sick of giving money to Google for half baked products that stop working properly 6 months in.

Lack of usb is a deal breaker for me. My WiFi struggles with massive files, and 4k TV episodes are at least 4-5gb, films are easily 8-12gb

Not on a Sony TV. But Hisense yes cause the TV is slow. It also helps keep your TV from doing any heavy lifting prolonging the tv

you never mentioned one important thing, The Onn 4K Pro has a usb 3.0 port which is important to sideload apps from a usb stick or to add more storage with a usb stick or a SSD, i have a 2T ssd hooked up for internal and external, i split the ssd into 2 partitions, yes it may be over kill but i will never run out of internal space

I have Chromecast 4k and like where the volume buttons are. This new Google streamer is step back in that regard. Instad, they should have removed the mic button, this is really annoying and I'm never-ever going to use voice commands.

Ironically the google streamer is buggy, with audio sync issues, no Dolby Vision 7 profile support for file playback and no audio passthrough. The Onn has all the same limitions and specs for half the price. without sync audio issues.

Does the ONN support the full enhancement layer for Dolby Vision? Or does it fall back to I think profile 5 for DV support? I bought an Ugoos and slapped Core Elec on it to get full Dolby Vision support. FEL and profile 7 work great.

bought a pair of tivo 4k devices while we were still in the good ole us of a. real cheap, managed to kill ALL ads on homescreen (disabled a service in apps menu, it was that easy). even after the updates it stuck. pretty ok device, as snappy as our shield pro, highly recommended. never used tivo app integration, so cant say much about that. the only downside is that you cant run it off of tv usb port, needs a charger. i really loved our roku sticks since it ran off of tv usb, but lack of codec support made us switch to tivo 4k. im actually thinking getting 3-4 more and paying all the duties and taxes and shipping just to have a few more as backups. oh, never used it with hdr/dv material so i dunno if tivo 4k supports those at all…

Most of these function well enough my problem has to do with lack of ability to remember what I am watching and following. My attempt to find a streamer that can do this has resulted in a draw full of devices and I back to Roku that are the best of a poor group.

There's nothing wrong with more choices and the Onn does the job and does it for half the price. Let's also not forget that there are millions of Chromecast devices and TVs running Chromecast so I'm pretty sure Google will have to update it. Currently, there are very few Google TV Streamer devices so if anything is getting updated it's probably Chromecast, not Streamer.

I would use something out of the 'native tv apps' for than I don't need to sit all the advertisement in some apps that take full 8 minutes.. If I watch via the native tv app I can't switch to cable tv while the app is running in the background.. With a seperate device via hdmi... I can..

Not all streaming apps work on Android 14. Britbox is one of those. So the Google TV Streamer was a downgrade from the ONN box, which I still use, while the Google TV Streamer is in a closet doing nothing. Probably will never use.

You forgot to mention that the new Google remote swapped the Home and Mic buttons. This can be inconvenient for people who are still using the older Chromecasts on other TVs in their home. FYI, the Onn 4K Pro isn't officially available here in Canada. Even Amazon's Canadian site doesn't offer an import option (the only option is for the original non-pro 4K). Even the dark grey version of the TV Streamer isn't available here. :(

Fellow Canadian here. I grabbed a few Onn 4K/4K Pro when I crossed the border last summer and it's really a great inexpensive device. I replaced my Chromecast w/ GTV 4k with the Onn 4k Pro since it's way snappier + backlit remote is great. I must also mention that the main difference between the Pro and Non-Pro versions are the integrated speaker (which is only used for Google Assistant to respond. You can't play music with it for example) and the backlit remote. Apart from that, both devices use the same hardware and have the same capabilities. The Non-Pro Onn 4k is already great if you don't need these extra features.

Please don't compare Apple TV to anything Google. Apple TV is the snappiest, most beautiful UI, The most powerful, Best picture streaming device one can get. I loved it. The reason i sold mine was because of the lack of audio codecs but if it has all the audio codecs like Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus that i have, I would never go back to Android. It always chug and stutters. The only that works fast initially is the NVidia Shield but with time, that one even slows down.

@@nitmare64 I have both and use both. This is googles version of Apple TV and I will compare it as much as I want. The Apple TV is good, but so is this. It doesn't lag, it's not slow. the UI is just as smooth as apple TV. This box is every bit as good as apple tv no matter what you say. I own them. You own neither. so just shut up and stop telling others to not compare the top TV boxes on the market.

I usually actually take these reviews as valid but this one just doesn't sit well. The fact that they did not address the numerous issues people are having with the Google streamer. I don't feel like listing them but just search it and many people are returning the product because it just doesn't work properly in which case or the other. Also the fact that the box it's shipped in has no protection what so ever for the actual device is another redflag. Every single one I've seen in store the packaging is beaten to shit to the point where one employee physically warned me that I might not even want to bother going up there cause the packaging was in such bad shape. I finally found one and returned it right after opening it cause 1 it was pretty beat up and after opening it revealed that the whole top side of the device which covers most of the hardware is sitting flat against the back of the box no shielding or packaging at all. Think if you took a cd and took the top of the case off shoved it in a box that tightly fit it and shipped it. There is no telling what has hit that thing or been done to it and obviously they aren't holding up for shipping. Which makes sense why so many of them are having physical issues. Would you throw your $1000 GPU in a box without support around it? No what in God's name made them think it was smart to do with that. In the end their all electronics that can be damaged. Big drop on all fronts.
