All well & good unless you're in the UK's Scottish Highlands where loading web pages esp. Security links are as slow as old Dial-up. Especially in the far north Scotland there's almost no way to get Google links & sites to load for security verifications. this is really bad, phones are really easy to lose . I am frustrated as I have been using Gmail from the beginning. I do not have 2 step verification, yet Google only allows access by sending security code. If you are traveling out of the country and you have a catastrophic loss of your belongings you will not be able to access your email and your contacts when you most need them. You may not be able to receive emails from the consulate or so on. What about if you lose everything in a home fire? You may be locked out of your account. Pretty bad, it means I may have to migrate from Google. Security in this case trumps usability. Terrible. I could get a replacement American Express card through extensive security questions without my ID. Google / Gmail should allow other options.

What absolute hogwash. Basically, you can't do it without a phone or tablet. Try telling a bank that you wrote down password keys - it's in their terms of use that you don't write down passwords and they won't cover you if they find out you did. And what if I am actually on the tablet/phone I want to access emails from? If the code goes to the same phone then by definition it's not secure - your phone gets nicked, they hack your password, they then use same phone to authenticate the password. I just don't see how this is more secure without making it impossibe to use without ALWAYS having a working 2nd phone with you. Am i stupid, or does this process just make no sense whatsoever?

Hi can anyone please help me. I used my phone that's now broken at the time I Set up the 2 step verification code. I can't access my Gmail account because of this code unless if can get the code from the broken phone. I didn't set other options like backup codes to help me.
