Fun fact: The mandolin parts as well as the slide guitar solo during the bridge were all written and played right there on the spot by Tim Pierce, who is one of the greatest session players alive. He claims to have done all of those parts in one or two takes each. They literally make the whole song come to life.

Tim Pierce's opening (and throughout) mandolin work makes this song instantly recognizable, and his slide solo....it was great all around. The writer (song and music), Pierce, the orchestra and of course Rob's producing (duh!).
@wiredjerk Жыл бұрын
Right?! They claim to be alt rocks snob in the past, but apparently someone that is still linger in because they gave no love to the studio guitarist. One that pull them from just alt rock, and helped catapult them into the stratosphere. If the lyrics didn’t get you in that feeling of longing, unrequited feels, that slide held you down and poured it all over you. It’s not a stretch to say that without Tim Pierce, there would be no orchestra, and the song would not have gone where it went.
@kane03877 ай бұрын
Rob Cavello knows what he is doing with strings. Also added them to Green Days "Good Riddance" which catapulted that song as well. I am just watching it, John mentions rob cavello. I'm like "green days producer"

John, as one artist to another, keep writing, singing and composing music from your heart!!! God gave you a wonderful gift to communicate love, hope, and the struggles of life to help and encourage millions...God used this song to break my heart open to His healing when my Mom had passed away in '95. I create paintings with much reluctance ( for my own reasons, but do so in honor of those who have shown me sincere love) because of my Mom and Dad...she wanted me to continue creating art...I saw this bearded iris on my way back home about 6 months after she passed and started crying uncontrollably.....didn't know the name of the flower, yet, but your song was already ministering to me.....Thanks. Put one on a wall here in town as part of a mural project several years ago in thanks to my Mom for her vision of my talents I didn't see nor really wanted to create due to the enormous pain that comes with loving people so much. .Peace bro! love you
