Goose Gossage - Baseball Hall of Fame Biographies

Goose Gossage intimidated hitters with a ferocious intensity. Gossage, one of the top relievers throughout the 1970s and '80s, spent a 22-year career with nine clubs, including the 1978 world champion New York Yankees and the 1984 National League champion San Diego Padres. Often pitching multiple innings to earn a save, he earned nine All-Star selections and recorded 20 or more saves during 10 seasons, leading his league three times. The second man to record 300 saves, Gossage retired among the top five all-time leaders in games pitched, relief innings and relief strikeouts.

Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Goose Gossage! In 1977 he struck out 151 batters in 133 relief innings with the #Pirates. The year before with the #WhiteSox - in his only full season as a starting pitcher - Gossage struck out 135 batters in 224 innings.

Brett hit some big homers off him for sure I haven't found his specific stats off Gossage, but I remember the HR in the pine tar game, and his homer that clinched the 1980 playoffs. Brett was a great hitter who hit 3 homers off Catfish Hunter in one playoff game. His career average in the playoffs was 362.

HOF Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale made Goose look like a nice guy. He consistently led the league in hit batters. And control was not the problem. He threw at guys! And afterwards offered to sigh the bruise!

I'd love to know how he's in the HOF, but Lee Smith still isn't and probably won't be. Smith is his better in virtually any category you can name.

That's not what I was wondering. Lee Smith has a nearly identical ERA and ERA+ (park adjusted), was a 9-time AS also, has a vastly better K/9 and K/BB rate, and has 478 saves to 100 blown saves. Gossage has 300 to 112, which is one of the poorest save percentages you'll find, and a paltry 2:1 K/BB ratio. My point is, he wasn't as good as Smith, and it's not even close (check their scores on any HOF monitoring site). Their careers overlapped by over a decade, too, so it isn't even an era-adjusted issue. Fact is, Smith hardly got a sniff at the Hall, while Gossage got in. There are more deserving candidates, and Gossage getting in during a weak year (his LAST year) suggests politics at play, not merit.

Telling Schtories with Christopher Schultz Lee Smith got his saves by pitching 1 inning, coming in fresh with no runners on base. Gossage got his saves by pitching 3 or 4 innings, oftentimes inherting a mess from the guy who was in before him. Gossage had a much heavier workload than guys like Lee Smith, Trevor Hoffman, and Mariano Rivera. That's why Goose is in the HOF.
